Just got it at the Office Depot in Annapolis/Parole, Maryland. They got in 4 today, bought one for me and one for the wife.

Yes, that leaves 2 left.

It's cool! Screen looks fine...but is better with backlight on...of course, haven't even charged the thing fully yet!

Haven't played much with it yet...very small...

Anyway, they're out there...

1) The item is a "3 Day Delivery" item as it is coming from the "manufacturer." (Huh? Weird...)

2) Currently I am supposed to have the item 5/7 (3 weekdays from today when I ordered it) but someone who ordered it yesterday is supposed to get it 5/5 or so another post says.

My biggest concern is these "instock" website orders will never really arrive on time (I can easily wait till Monday) but this week brick and mortar Office Depots will get the units, I will be waiting for mine... and they will sell out.

Geez!!! I hope when I call tommorow there is a way I check if it shipped, or check my credit card to see if it was charged.

It now turns out that Sony has allowed the American version of their color CLIE the ability to play unconverted and unecrypted native MP3 files. With the color hi-res screen, I am back in a buying dilemma.

m505 or color CLIE?

Sheesh. (Sorry if this was slightly OT!)

My on-line Staples order is to be delivered by "Staples courier." I take that to mean that a Staples employee will get on a bike and deliver my m505 to me. So I'm guessing my on-line order will be treated pretty much like a bricks-and-mortar order.

I live in New York, and my delivery address is Midtown, ground zero for Staples deliveries, so they may not do it the same way everywhere.

Does anyone know if the BEst Buy stores have gotten any yet? Particularly in the Ventura or L.A. County Areas? Thanks.

It is charging right now. But to be honest guys I'm not to pleased with the screen. With the backlight turned on it is okay. But it is dark with the backlight off. I also have a IIIc and it is much brighter.

Looks like the best plan was to wait and then waltz into Office Depot and wait for some dope to dig through today's heap of boxes and pull one out for you.

p.s. the color screen is nice! fits my needs!

But this software appears to require a specific driver for your phone. Of course, the CD only comes with drivers for three phone! The people at both Palm and Motorola were not very helpful.

Two questions:
1) Has anyone out there made this work and/or have this driver for me?
2) Does anybody know if this is this the same software as on the MIK CD, since it explicitly support my L7089. Perhaps someone could send me just the driver file from that CD? (Probably something like Motorola_L7089.PRC).

The screen: it's not that bad, really. Had I thought it was going to be like the iiic, then I would be disappointed. But I thought it was going to totally SUCK, and it does not--with the backlight turned on. Without the backlight it's comparable to the ipaq in sunlight without its backlight.

I feel the screen overall is better than the prism simply because the black grid isn't very noticeable. That is worth alot to me. But the screen is nowhere near as bright, but it's good enough if you ask me.

Email with more questions. I have pics to prove I have it, but by now there are so many people claiming they have it I don't think I'll be labeled a false prophet.

It's not a great screen, but you can live with it.

No m505's at the Office Despot in Rockville (on the Pike) or Gaithersburg (Shady Grove Rd). All things considered, I will probably call again before I leave work...

The Staples on Rockville Pike is clueless (that's where I put in one of my pre-orders -- the other is with Outpost.com). The salesguy said, "End of May, the official release is May 26," and refused to believe me when I told him the pre-order sign had promised they would be in by May 8th. If OD gets them in first around here, I'll forego my free game card just to not have to deal with the Staples confusion.

Have they shown up at _any_ Staples or other retail outlets, or is it just Office Despot so far?

Guess so... my eyes aften read the number 5 as the number 0, and "color" as "black and white LCD."

Was there ANY point to preordering? It seems to be the most expensive, slowest way to get them.

So I hurried out some calls to local Office Depots (NYC), and found noofin'!! (All had them, all sold out.)

It's a shutout. I'm going to go play with my abacus for three more weeks.

The first 500 appeared in my area and now while 505's are showing up all over there are none around here. Is it me or do I just have to go in and ask; rather then call on the phone.

I bought it at office depot, its still wrapped. For verification i can give you my phone number and we can talk - I will also scan my receipt and take a photo of the unit to verify.

What is this unit? It is a Palm V with useable color. Period. That is the selling point and it works. Putting this unit next to my IIIc right makes the IIIc look like a towering monster, I am so glad I finally have a Palm V (emmm.. m505) back (gave my V to my wife and never stopped regreting it.)

How about the screen? Wow, it is *different*. In the car in the parking lot of Office Depot (yep, I had to... it had 25% battery power by the way.) I turned it on and I thought the display was very good (cloudy day). It had a greyish background but readibility was very good and color was clearly visible, forget that *you can't see color* BS because it just isn't true.

When I got home I locked myself in the bathroom for darkness (yep, I am a complete and total nerd) and turned the backlight on and wham up comes the milky white type of backlight you see on the iPAQ, and the screen was *beautiful* and *colorful* but not in the blinding way of the IIIc.

Now what about in between, a sorta dark room (no overhead lighting) in my house like the living room on a cloudy day with the windows open and the lights off. The m505 was weakest here. My wifes Palm V was a little more clear in readibility unless you tilted the m505 to try to capture more light. If I turned the backlight on it made it more readible but was hard to see the backlight was on. Is it good... yes... but not fantastic.

In general about the screen: In office lighting it will equal a Palm V in readibilty, show USEABLE color (not muddy but not IIIc), outdoors it is very good, in pure darkness it is good, and in dim lighting needs some twisting and the backlight but is *ok*. Is it better than the IIIc... HELL YES, HELL YES, HELL YES. It is managable in ALL lighting, shows color in all lighting, AND DAMN IT IS SO SO SO SO much smaller.

The case is great, ALL metal front AND back, the buttons looks SO much better than the m500 (which got the off color black buttons.) and the sides are nicely rounded. The built in calculator is now in color. The backlighting of the grafitti area (which I have never seen anyone talk about) works GREAT with the white markings on the area being transparent and lit from behind so it seems the lines light up from BELOW (I thought until I had the unit that the light would wash over the grafitti area but this is MUCH better.)

I will post more later... in summary THE BEST PALM EVER with a DIFFERENT but still GREAT color screen.

No Office Depot stores in Southern California (or from reading the comments, Northern CA) have recieved the 505 yet, although M500's seem to be readily available.

My guess is that they released them to everywhere EXCEPT California today; CA will probably show up tomorrow. :-( The price we pay for Sunshine, I guess.

FWIW, the Office Depot in Plymouth Meeting, PA (Phila area) has no idea when they're
coming in. They gave me a blank look when I went in and asked them. I called twice
today and went in as well.

Screen is a little duller than I'd have hoped, but with the front light on it's sweet!

I'm still 'evaluating'.

I don't see any 'alarm manager' though...and can't figure how to get the LED to blink or the thing to vibrate. Maybe it has to be off the cradle for that.

We will see.

Almost makes you want to buy an iPAQ....sorry...I'll wash my mouth out with Soap and Bill Gates.

Anyway, it's sitting on the charger right now but before I did I had to see the screen for myself. The color is a little washed out but with the backlight on it's pretty good. But don't take my word for it..see it for yourself.

btw, while i was at OD, I watched theguy punch in the sku and the m505's info popped up. OD's cost is for the palm is like 360 or something like that.

I just got the M505 and I tried using the IR port from the Palm III to beam things over to the M505 and It seems that if they are both flat on the desk pointing to each other they can't see each other but if I raise one on an angle it will beam.
Is this normal or defective?

Alarm on 505 is maybe 10-20% louder. 505 is not quite 3/4" shorter, and a little thinner, lighter too. The vibrating alarm is not super strong, nowhere near my StarTAC phone vibration. You might not feel it in a suit pocket, but you'd likely feel it if it was closer to your body in a pants pocket or shirt pocket if you dared.

On to the SD card. Beamed over a few apps from my IIIc. Tried "Froggy" game. Copied it onto expansion card then deleted app from main memory. Game worked fine, but would write its highscore/preferences database to main memory every time. Tried copying the db to expansion card, then deleting from main memory, and it would not remember the high scores or prefs I had set. Tried again, and set the expansion card "protection lock slider" to lock. Deleted db in main memory, and same situation, didn't remember any highscores or settings.
Not quite sure whats going on here.
The manual for the exp. card mentions setting up different directories for apps/dbs/pics etc when using a card reader/writer. Maybe this would make some difference. Its hard to say, as I don't have any SD card "aware" apps yet, or a reader/writer.

Card does not report correct memory usage. Reported 32k then 48k used with nothing else on card. Then with 166k FireViewer on there, reported 240kb used. Oh yeah, card only reports 14.0 Meg total when empty, not 16M. After deleting fireviewer, CardInfo now reports 64k used, with no apps whatsoever on card. This keeps getting higher and higher in 16k increments. Whats going on here? After reformatting the card, drops back down to 32k though.

Removing card turns unit back on, and makes it beep?

Anyone know what HypT-View, RootObj-View, LMCache-View are? They're listed in the handheld Info screen.

My m505 unit is manufactured in the USA, its screen looks fine, no defect, and it is now charging: I just opened the box: simply beautiful.

Shipping date from Palm to Office Depot (mentioned on the package) was May 6, yesterday: they just arrived at Office Depot today.

I happily canceled my Palm store order :-)
