The 'USER' Cookie is a cookie that relogs you in the \"front page.\"
So what really happens is. . .
You visit PIC. The 'USER' Cookie, logs you in at the front page. (Which is the same thing as logging you in the forums)
You visit the Forums. The phpbb2mysql_data cookie logs you in the forums, AGAIN. Therefore, you logged in twice.
If you deleted the USER cookie, you won't be logged in when you visit the front page. However, when you visit the forum, you'll be logged in.
--
The mysterious thing is . . . why isn't this happening to IE users as well?

Alternatively, the solution I tried and mentioned above also works.
Cookieculler gets rid of every cookie EXCEPT for USER. Then the next time I visit, I am automatically logged into the main site and the forums.

 Re:
This theory does not fit with what I have observed. If this theory was true, then one could avoid this problem by always going first straight to the forums ( http://www.palminfocenter.com/forum/), and then after visiting the forums go to the front page. I have tried this a couple of times, and the last visited time still jumps to the current time.
Some other observations, I have not verified these in a while, but this is what I recall:
- I do not have this problem if I use the same instance of FireFox.
- If I last connected to PIC from computer A, and I try to connect from computer B I will see the problem.
- If I last connected to PIC from computer A and I left FireFox running, if I then try to connect from computer A again, I will NOT see the problem.
- If I last connected to PIC from computer A and I did shut down FireFox (or maybe I did I full reboot) then I will see the problem.
- I have seen this problem in IE. If I last connected to PIC from FireFox and then try to connect using IE, on the same computer, I saw the problem. I have not tried using IE on one computer and the IE from another.

What I don't understand is it's been months now, and it still isn't fixed I know Ryan is busy, but this is such a serious drawback, I think the traffic has slowed down on PIC because of it. Lots of people are switching to Mozilla and Firefox. I use Mozilla 1.7.3 at home and I never know where the new posts are. Here at the office with IE6 it works. However, I'm not supposed to be browsing the web (lunchtime right now).
Please, Ryan, can't you devote a few hours to this and get it nailed down? I'll bet if you go over to the Mozilla Forums someone there could help you.

Has something changed? I last connected from Home around 10, last night. I just connected from Work and it correctly stated:
Quote: You last visited on 06 Dec 2004 10:10 pm The time now is 07 Dec 2004 08:33 am
Now this was the same instance of Firefox that I used yesterday at Work (I had not shut it down), Also I had finally upgraded Home to the release version of Firefox last night, it was the last release candidate. I have not yet tested my other scenarios.

Here's the situation.
The problem is beyond my knowledge of PHP, I am not a php developer (yet) I've looked at this a bunch of times but dont know how to fix it.
I've asked the developer who did this to look at this problem TONS of times, He's a busy guy too, but basically he keeps ignoring me about this problem!!! Sooooo..... there we are. It's probably beyond him too.
If there is a PHPBB dev/expert out there that wants to take a look at the code I'd be grateful. Just get in touch with me.

Oh well, all the other tests failed. Also, I have just returned home and the problem has reappeared here.

So what is the situation now? The forum is working perfectly for me, I'm getting the good ole' orange boxes and I'm seeing the new posts. I simply deleted one cookie.
Could the problem be fixed by just removing the cookie? Can't you just disable the phpbb's autogenerated cookie thingy?
...Like that made any sense. Anyways, isn't there a simple option somewhere in the administration panel that tells phpbb to not hand out cookies?
[Edit]
Yeah, there are cookie settings in General Admin>>Configuration>>Cookie Settings.
Or is the problem bigger then that? What are you guys experiencing?

Additional information in regards to this on going problem: I just noticed (I would think others have noticed also but I have not seen this commented):
This would imply that the forum software is actually doing something different depending on if it is IE or Foxfire, and not just a cookie or other issue. Thus apparently a server side issue and not necessarily a client side issue.

The last time I checked this thread was in October. I recently stumbled on something that seems to work for me with Firefox 1.04. Avoid logging on on the main page. Log in only on the forums page. Then the new posts show, for me at least, on two different computers.
I didn't reread the entire thread, so sorry if this repeats something already said.

I am not sure, but I think this problem might finally be fixed. I did not just have this problem after restarting Foxfire; I restarted Foxfire in order to install the 1.0.7 upgrade.

Potter, log out from both the front page and the forum. Don't log into the front page at all, then log into the forum. You'll see the new posts then. Just remember, don't log into the front page and then into the forums. It works, I've got mine set up that way at home with Firefox. Here in the office I'm on IE so there's no problem.

OK, I never gave a crap about this thread until Firefox 1.5 came out and which I just started using. It is awesome. So much faster and more flexible than IE. I love it!
Until I came here...which I do very often.
This problem needs to be fixed!!!
