Post How To: Hotsync Over Wifi
I copied my post from tapland for you guys!

Quote:
This little guide should help most of you set up this simple yet blazingly fast hotsync connection you can do over your wireless LAN.

Prerequisites:
1. a wifi card (duh)
2. A static IP (unless you want to keep changing your IP to match your primary PC. Now i have DHCP set up at my house and for some reason it stays the same so this may not be required.
3. The neccesary ports unblocked for your firewall.

Steps:
1. Right click on your hotsync icon and click \"Network\" to allow network syncing.
2. Right click again on the hotsync icon and go to setup.
3. Go to \"Network\" and tap the names that will be seeing your PC as the primary computer.
4. Tap your hotsync name and set the following info (if it hasn't already) to this
Primary PC: Your name
Primary PC Address: (go to run, type in CMD, once the prompt opens up type in ipconfig and type in your IP). Write this number down.
Subnet Mask: Same steps as earlier (i didn't need this so it may not be important to you).

5. Take your Zodiac and go to the Hotsync application.
6. Tap the bring down options button and go to \"Modem Sync Prefs\" switch that to \"Network\". Go to Lan Sync Prefs and switch that to \"LanSync\".
7. Go to primary PC Setup and type in the following exactly as shown
Primary PC Name: !!
Primary PC Address: (the ip that was in the primary PC address in the hotsync application). Copy this number over.
Subnet Mask: (Leave it blank. If you need to fill it in)
8. Go back to hotsync and click \"Modem\"
9. At the bottem you will see \"Select a Service\" click that and select \"Wifi\"
10. Leave the phone number settings blank.
11. Press the hotsync button and you should be able to hotsync 300 ft away from your PC!

I hope this helps you guys out. I for one love the speed of wirelessly hotsyncing. Have fun!

Edit: I have been hotsyncing over and over again. I have never had any issues connecting and hotsyncing over wifi. My next mission is to figure out how to hotsync from school to my home PC through a router (oh yea)!

There are some DHCP configuration settings that control the "expiration" of IPs, which can affect this. However, these setting are typically disabled in the Home network environment.

Thanks. I was unaware of this. I'll add it later (when i'm off of my Zodiac).

Do you know how to hotsync when you are not in a LAN?

For example i am at school inside a wifi network. Is it possible for me to hotsync over that to my PC at home?

This should be possible but it will depend entirely on your school allowing outgoing ports TCP 14237, UDP 14238 (I think. could be wrong) which is unlikley if the network administrator has any skills and you also need to allow those ports from your home connection.

Theoretically you should be able to connect then if you know your public IP address or DNS name and have configured lansync properly.

I have not ever actually done this, maybe once I get my own home network setup with DSL (current I only have dial up) I will give it a try. However, some pointers:

The worst-case scenario that I can think of would be:
  • The current WiFi connection is on a network behind a firewall that is filtering outbound connections.
  • The target computer is on a network behind a firewall.
Thus, things that would need to be addressed:
  • To get past the outbound firewall, you would have to convince the local network admin to open up the ports, as mentioned by suiciety, TCP:14237 and UDP:14238.
  • To get to your home network, you would need to know the IP of your firewall. Alas most ISPs have their networks setup such that clients' IP numbers change periodically, unless one pays extra for a static IP. I understand there are ways that your network can detect that its IP has changed, and then issue a command (such as sending a email message to notify you of the change).
  • To get through your firewall, you would need to configure the firewall to redirect any connections to TCP:14237 and UDP:14238 to your target computer on your network.

And i'm pretty lucky. I scanned the ports (let's not ask how ;) ). They are open on the network. I also am pretty sure my IP for my house is static. Since it hasn't changed in a couple of weeks, but then it may change. Ah to heck with it. I'll give it a try later :D

I've done all that was said above and I'm able to sync my zodiac via wifi. The problem is, I can't install programs onto my SD card, only onto my RAM and I have one program that must go onto the SDcard since it is so large (I have the zodiac 1). Is there anyway to fix this problem?

Or you can build a vpn tunnel between the palm and the target computer. That will get rid of firewall issues and provide better security. I don't know how safe it is to leave the palm sync ports open in the wild.

There two caveat though. First all the routers between the palm and the sync computer must support vpn pass-through, but most do nowadays. Second a vpn client is needed, and that is usually not free.

One last thing. Usually residential ip's are dynamic and may change throughout the day (I actually have the opposite problem, a semi static ip).
Therefore a dynamic dns service (dyndns.org for instance) is needed to link a domain name with the current ip on the sync computer. Once you build the vpn tunnel, you can use the private IP.

I remember reading several years ago about the existence of a denial of service attack that existed in the Palm Network Hotsync. How extensive this attack was, I do not know. My assumption is that it would only prevent you from using the Network Hotsync; not from using some other services. Whether this has been fixed or not, I do no know. I doubt it; since the Hotsync Manager can only handle syncing one device at a time, the attacker would only have to keep the port busy in a state that the Hotsync Manager thinks that there is a device attempting to Hotsync.

I just did a little more reading on this DoS attack. I never found anywhere that said this has been fixed. However, I did find notes that indicated that it was is version 4.0.4.0 of the Hotsync Manager; and this was not just "keeping the port busy" but actually a way of making the Hotsync Manager crash or hang. From what I can tell, it appears to be fixed in Hotsync Manager 6.0.1.

Does anybody know if this works on a Sony TJ-37 which has built in wifi? I may just try this tonight since I need to install the Sony software on my new computer.

I am able to put in the above settings described. However I still can not get it to work. My Clie says it is running Network HotSync 4.0. Is that what you have? Any suggestions? I verified wifi was working by going to webpages.

I got it working now. I changed the system name to\"!!\" that was listed above instead of my actual computer which I put in there.

This is awesome! I have had my CLIE since the day I bought it brand new which was nearly 3 years ago and I never knew I could do this.

Being able to sync over wifi makes it so much easier since I can do it from anywhere in the house. I will probably end up syncing more frequently since I find this a lot more convenient.

Once you have WiFi Hotsyncing operational, check out 2PlayMe. With this you can set up your device to automatically Hotsync periodically, say every day at midnight.
