Seriously though, I think the nostalgic value of the avatar greatly outweighs the amount of benefit that could be obtained from a new avatar for a girl who never posts.

I agree.
I found a version I redid a long time ago, when free-time was more prevalent, where the poor walrus wasn't being violated. I think it was in a new avatar for Pepper contest thread:
The whole two front feet visible explanation really answers our criticism...so I'll ignore it.
