I had no problems with browsing speed at all. I was impressed by it. The one site I couldn't visit was a Flash site -- it turns out none of their demo models had the Flash player installed, so that site wouldn't come up at all (you can go see it at http://www.captainscarlet.com -- there were also film clips there I wanted to try viewing, but since I couldn't see the site at all...).

Loading of apps was slow. I tried counting seconds but the Nokia reps were very good at talking during this, to try to break my concentration, I think. 15-20 seconds to load, but they insisted this was pre-release and they intend to cut these times.

I asked for a full reset and was shown it; it was maybe a minute, but this is supposed to be a very rare event -- and again they stressed they are intending to cut that time.

Its normal use is to stay in Suspend mode. Coming out of it is instant, as far as I could see.

I'm not sure how much faster program loading will be, but even if it takes say, ten seconds, I'd still be getting access to apps that are *far* more capable than *anything* available for current Palm OS 5 devices, so I'd have no problems with that. I'd rather be using AbiWord ten seconds later on a spacious screen than, say, waiting 1-3 seconds for WordSmith on a small cramped screen.

And everyone should remember this too: This is a FIRST-GEN device. I don't think Nokia is going to drop this thing. I expect them to stick with it and eventually use faster CPUs and fatter batteries. The original N-Gage was an abysmal failure, but they gave it a second shot. Nokia is a huge company -- they might even give the N-Gage a third shot (not that I have any interest in the N-Gage!). It's apparent they've put far more thought into the 770 than others have for such a device -- and they've opened up development to everyone.

Yes, but I want one NOW. I don't want to wait for the next generation. :)

Thanks for the details, that's what I wanted to hear.

Nokia 3G Tv serivce?!

Babelfished English:

Nokia is connected to numerical television

Funny rowdy characters attend the tram of Helsinki since April. They hold in hand, as a book, an odd apparatus, scratched Nokia, on which they look at the télé.Ils are a half-thousand to try out laTNT on mobile, quilor offers nearly 20 chains 24 hours a day, among which Eurosport, Euronews, BBC World, CNN, MTV and well of other local programs. All were seen proposing the experiment after a drawing of lots carried out by their mobile operators, Elisa and Telia Sonera. For 4,99 eurospar month, they obtain the terminal (a smartphone) and freedom to follow their programs where they want and when they want. The apparatus fonctione rather well. The image is fluid. The screen, of good quality, makes about the size of a large box of matches, and the sound, rather rudimentary in the high speaker, is good in the ear-phones. Completely superfluous? Perhaps, but one ends up being caught with the play. Thus started the portable telephone.

Nokia's Chief Technology Officer to Make Keynote Presentation at 2005 JavaOne Conference

>>>Nokia Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President Pertti Korhonen will deliver a General Session keynote address on Wednesday, June 29, from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m., detailing Nokia's vision for the evolution of the Java Platform in the mobile space.

and

>>>Nokia estimates that by the end of December 2005, Nokia will have cumulatively shipped well over 300 million Java technology-enabled devices based on their Series 40, Series 60 and Series 80 developer platforms worldwide. With hundreds of millions of Java technology-enabled mobile devices available and over 45,000 mobile applications for the Java platform on the market today, Nokia estimates approximately 23 million mobile Java applications are being downloaded to mobile devices each month during 2005.

Sort of makes POS look like a quaint child, no?

What is interesting about this is that the 770 does not have Java! Next gen, maybe? Or maybe a future download?

I've really had to wise up on Symbian stuff over the past few months. While the original N-Gage didn't really get far due to hardware quirks, the QD has been a roaring success in Symbian circles - it's the Symbian version of the Tapwave. I expect the 770 to follow a similar pattern.

The QD is the next-gen of the N-Gage, which fixed some of the more annoying problems of it's predecessor, such as the hot swapping of cards and the ability to act as a USB host drive a la T5.

For your degenerate please, here is some QD pr0n:

www.allaboutngage.com

http://www.n-gage.com/en-GB/gamedeck/ngage_qd/

Despite being touted by Nokia as a zoom-zoom game deck, it's also a perfectly servicable smartphone as well, which with the addition of a keyboard can be used for practical business stuff as well. I've been toying with the idea of a cheap 2nd hand one for my Symbian write ups...

Ah! *burp* Very disgestible stuff. Thanks.

BTW, my 770 report is still in progress, but heading towards its finish. I hope it will be published next week, with my very blurry prOn pics. Link will be posted.

Nokia target of saboteurs, reprinted in full:

NOKIA DEATH HOAX FURY

Jun 26 2005

Customers told phones can kill

By David Taylor

FURIOUS Nokia bosses have blasted sick hoaxers who claim some calls to mobiles could cause 'rapid death' from electric shocks.

Official-looking letters claiming to be from the phone company are being emailed and posted to random customers across the UK.

They say: 'Many of you will be aware of the rumours circulating about our products. It is my sad duty to inform you that these rumours are true.'

Carrying the signature of Nokia Chief Executive Jorma Ollila, 55, the letter warns that when a mobile is dialled from certain numbers the phone sends out massive quantities of electromagnetic energy.

The hoaxers claim this results in 'both coronary heart failure and brain haemorraging, generally followed by severe external bleeding and rapid death.'

A spokesman for Nokia said: 'Like many other claims circulating on the internet, this is a hoax.

'The letter has absolutely nothing to do with Nokia. We regret any inconvenience caused to our customers by this work of fiction.'

The bogus letter also claims all other mobile phone manufacturers are affected by the same problem. It says it is an inherent fault in the system design and cannot be resolved.

Addressed To All Staff and stamped 'confidential', the letter has been made to look like it has been leaked from within the company - but the word haemorrhaging is spelt incorrectly.

The final paragraph warns staff if they speak to anyone about the letter they will be sacked.

A source at the 136-year-old Finland-based company said: 'In instances like this the culprit usually turns out to be a disgruntled member of staff or a rival firm.

'We don't want to start pointing the finger until we have evidence but we don't want the company to be damaged by malicious incidents like this

Sounds very much like the style of some of the creeps around here at PIC...
