 Graffiti 1 for M515
Does anyone know how I can easily download Graffiti 1 onto my M515? I prefer to not use G2.

The M515 already has graffiti 1. Graffiti 2 was introduced in a later model, the T5 if memory serves me right.
Hope it helps.

 Graffiti 1 for M515
No. My M515 has G2. I just bought it on Ebay. It's Version 4.1 I'm not comfortable using G2 and would like to get G1, if possible. Thanks.

Something odd is going on then. The stock m515 shipped with Palm OS 4.1 and G1. A few things to double check: - Check the OS version:
- From the standard application launcher, perform a menu App, Info...
- In the 'Info' dialog box, at the bottom press the 'Version' tap area.
- Near the top of the dialog box will now display a line something like:
Quote: Palm OS version 4.1 Does it display 4.1, or something else like 4.1.2? If I remember correctly, Palm used 4.1 on the m515, which used G1. Palm Source, now Access, released a Palm OS 4.1.2 ROM image for the Palm OS Emulator, which used G2. I do not recall Palm ever using 4.1.2 or making it available as an upgrade to any of their devices.
- Do you have any third party applications on this device? Most notably, do you have a third party application that could be changing the Graffiti? Most common are:
- Jot (G2 is based on Jot).
- TealScript

palmato is right. If you really have a Palm m515, it has Graffiti 1. OS 4.1 is the operating system, and it predated G2. If it really has G2, it isn't an m515, at least not if someone hasn't done something rather odd to it.

 Graffiti 2
I do have a Palm M515. I bought it on Ebay about 2 weeks ago. It is in excellent condition. Looks almost new and has been used very little. The Info. screen describes it as: Palm OS software v. 4.1.2, then further down on all the software, the built-in Graffiti says: Graffiti 2 v. 4.1.2; Graffiti 2 Demo v. 4.1.2; Graffiti 2 Extension v. 4.1.2. So that is what I'm working with. If I could replace Graffiti 2 with G1, that would be great. I'm not happy with G2 at all. Some of the letters are very tricky: especially the \"k\", \"t\" \"h\" \"u\" and some symbols: \"$\" \"-\" etc....

Did you downgrade and hotsync files from a newer Palm? Just deleting the G2 files should fix any problems.

No. The M515 came loaded with G2. If I deleted it, I'm afraid there would be NO graffiti at all. Then I would really be in trouble!

Unless there is some compelling reason not to, do a hard reset. It will put it back in factory state. Unless someone put G2 in ROM with something like JackFlash. If that is the case and JackFlash is on your unit, you should be able to take it back out of ROM with JackFlash.
If this makes any sense, I no longer remember how to work with JackFlash.

Here's a theory of what may have happened, but it really looks weird.
PalmOs 4.1.2 was released as an update for the Tungsten W, and it did replace Graffitti 1 with the 2.
Details of the update are here, while here there's a list of the various OS versions and updates for all devices. Apparently 4.1.2 was only released for the T|W.
It appears that somehow somebody managed to put the files from that update into your m515. If they don't go away with a hard reset (the one that deletes everything and restores the device to the factory state) then it means that the rom was flashed with the update. Whether it's the full update of just parts of it remains to be seen, but the fact that the palmos version is changed shows it wasn't limited to just Graffitti. It may useful to check the Versamail version.
One way to get back to graffitti 1 would be to flash it with the original rom, not a trivial task. But at this point I'm not so sure there are many alternatives.

I don't have Jackflash on my M515. I'm hesitant to do a hard reset because when I restore everything with a hotsync, the G2, which is still on my desktop, will restore back onto my handheld and I won't have accomplished anything. Isn't there a workaround to get the old G1 downloaded from somewhere without too much hassle? Thanks for your suggestions.

If you remove the backup folder the G2 files will not be copied back to the handheld. Some applications will lose their data and preferences, but appointments, addresses, memo etc. will be fine.
How to remove the backup folder:
Exit Palm Desktop.
Go to the directory where palm desktop is installed (usually C:\\Program Files\\Palm). Look for the directory where your data is (name like your user id). Inside that there is a folder called backup: rename it (backup.old).
Hotsync.

One point I forgot to mention: When I received my M515 from the Ebay seller, he had already done a hard reset, of course, so it was in its \"original\" blank condition when I received it. So the Graffiti 2 HAD to be in the base operating system. So, even if I did another hard reset, the G2 would still be there.

Apparently this device has been modified from its original ROM. Someone has Flashed this device with the 4.1.2 ROM, either from the Tungsten W upgrade or more likely the Palm Source (now Access) developer's ROM. Therefore, possible ways to get Graffiti 1 back onto the device:
- Reflash the original m515 ROM image.
- Copy the G1 library files from another 4.1 to this device.
- Install a third party graffiti replacement.
Reflash the original m515 ROM imageNo solutions, but possible areas of exploration: - Palm Source (now Access) use to distribute the ROM images for all of the old Palm Devices. However, now they only make the 4.1.2 ROM available. So, one problem is where to get the ROM image from.
- The Palm OS Emulator comes with a utility that one can use to extract a ROM image from an actual device.
- I understand that JackFlash had the ability to modify the contents of the Flash ROM of several devices. As a related feature it could also backup and restore the ROM image.
- If I remember correctly the m505 and the m515 had identical ROMs. Some early m505 were shipped with Palm OS 4.0, but Palm released a Palm OS v 4.1 upgrade for these devices. Maybe the ROM image could be extracted from this upgrade, or maybe this upgrade could be tricked into apply the change to your m515.
- I understand that the Palm Upgrade tool has an advanced mode where one an select a ROM image to apply to a device.
- Palm use to sell the Palm Mobile Internet Kit which included the Palm OS 4.1 upgrade. It might be possible to apply this \"upgrade\" to the m515 (probably using advanced mode). This product however is getting harder and harder to find.
Copy the G1 library files from another 4.1 to this device.
Not many people will have done this, since there are so few 4.1.2 devices. However, I would expect this to be similar to how G1 was hacked onto the T3, and latter devices. However, instead of the G1 libraries being copied from the T1, one will need to get them off of another m515 or another Palm OS 4.1 device.
Install a third party graffiti replacement.
The only viable alternative that is G1 like that I know of the Teal Script.

Note: There was an earlier version of this product that came with Palm OS 3.5 upgrade. Some of the above hits are for this version.
