Thanks. Yeah, everything is plugged in, and everything appears to work up until you push the two halves together. I fear a cracked PC board or something like that . . .

 replacement battery for Zire 72
I just received a new replacement battery for my trusty Zire 72. There are instructions and Torx screwdrivers with it and the instructions look reasonably straightforward.
I am still a bit spooked by this. is there anything special I should be doing other than a Hotsynch before doing the change? Should I expect all my apps, settings, etc. to still be there when I power on again?
Any advice/experience appreciated.

 replacing battery
I have used my Zire 72 for about 3 years with \"above average\" use: syncing everyday to my work computer and using the alarm clock to wake up everyday, using the calendar, contacts, documents to go (excel & MS word), mp3 player, reading ebooks, recording improptu music sessions with the voice memo (often on camping trips), and playing with sundry programs & games extensively; 3 years before the battery died! I love this little device, I would rather try to save it than throw it away!
I just got my battery and torx wrenches in the mail and I am ready to try to replace it! I think I'll try the masking tape trick to kill the screen whine while I'm at it.
Any advice to a non-techy type is appreciated! I am a bit nervous
Should it be plugged into the wall charger as I replace the internal battery?
How should I ground myself to avoid static?
Is there anything else?
Please feel free to email me at lyra2112@mail.com
Thank you legodude for the fine photos that gave me the confidence to try!

Do not have it plugged into the wall. And static risk is usually low. Just touch something metal that is grounded such as the screws on a wall light switch which is usually grounded. Then you should be fine. Or if you want, loop a copper wire around your wrist and have it lead to something that is grounded metal. I never bothered with that before.

 Camera cable
Sorry if someone already said this and I missed it: But in the pictures at the beginning of this topic, the small ribbon cable above the battery is the camera cable. It seems to become detached somehow when the case is opened; in the picture, as in my own experience, it is found lying on top of the connector, but it needs to be inserted into that connector. I managed to do that with some difficulty.
Can someone more lucid than I please elaborate further on this issue, since I am sure my explanation is not clear.

 MOSTLY successful....
Well I opened it, replaced the battery and all is MOSTLY well!
I am having great difficulty putting the case back together - the black plastic at the top where the SDcard, power button and audio output jack are.
I thought it was good, forced it a bit, it's not flush and I just realized the metal along the right part of the screen is bowed up as well, screen is flat (by looking at reflection off of it).
It works, it charges, I hotsynced and everything backed up fine! Thank you legodude! My Zire works again! I think I have the same problem with the camera cable that javaerb had, I think it disconnected upon opening, so I will need to reconnect that once I open it again...
Help! how do I properly get the case back together? Reply here or to lyra2112@gmail.com
Thank you!!!

Hey Lego,
Just wanting to say thanks for the pics - made replacing the screen on my T|C a lot less daunting (and didnt have to spend time figuring out how to do it without destroying my PDA!
Unfortunately my replacement screen is the non-transflective one (only one available at the time) so it's a bit of a downgrade wrt brightness and viewing angle, but other than that it's great!
One thing I did notice however is that both my T|C and the one you repaired seem to have cracked the old screen in roughly the same place. This seems to be around the area whre the connector is onto the back of the screen - I noticed when i took it apart and putting it back together that the conector seems to put some pressure on the screen, which probably leaves the LCD prone to easy damage at that point..
Will have to be more careful with it in the future.. and maybe think about some sort of fix.
Thanks again for the guide!
H.

Re: Opening Palm Screen [Zire 72 and now T|C]
Legodude522,
Great Website, I'm glad I found it. Your post was awesome.
I need your help. Our Zire 72 won't come back on, Something got onto the contacts button and it got stuck down all night while charging. This morning it wouldn't come on. We tried all of the resets before finding the substance on the key. We then cleaned the key and tried to reset again, no luck the screen still wouldn't come on. We then disassembled the case, disconnected the battery for 10 hours and reassembled according to your instructions, the screen first and then the battery and tried to turn it on and it still won't come on, there's no sound or any indication of coming on, however when we reassembled the unit the green light did come on and stayed on for a few minutes. We tried the different resets and it still wouldn't come back on.
It is about 2 years old and it was working fine yesterday.

legodude522 wrote: I created a guide to help others know how to replace/repair/fix screen whine of the LCD and such. In this guide, this is being done on a Palm Zire 72 by me. DISCLIAMER: I am not responsible for any mishaps or damage that your device may recieve from following these procedures. Do this at your own risk. Compatble LCDs- Zire 71, Zire 72, Tungsten T|E, T|E2, T|C, [Not confirmed, T|2] Compatable digitizers[touchscreen]- Graffiti area- Zire 71, Zire 72, Tungsten T|E, Tungsten T|E2 Thumboard- T|C T|W I don't know about. The pictures are done by me and they can all be found here http://photobucket.com/albums/a267/Legodude522/Section 1: Opening the device. Remove screws. 2 on the bottom and one on the mesh. There are 2 more screws under the mesh. Screws and mesh removed. Opening it. This is the hardest part with the Zire 72, varies with device. After removing screws, pry the sides open with a flat screw driver or such. Dents are likly to oocur. Best to start around where the stylus silo is from top to bottom, do the same on the other side from top to bottom. Be careful with the screen, this procedure puts some stress on the screen. Once you open the Zire 72, it should look like this. The copper cable on the Zire 72 itself is the connector to the circuitry on the screen. The seperate connector also shown in the second picture is the Zire 71 cable. Pry the screen from the top cover. Section 2: The screen. Have the screen is disconnected from the connector cable. This can be pried open with a small flat head screw driver. Go around it evenly. After pulling the screen apart it should look like this. The clear part is the digitizer[touchscreen] which is plastic like. The black part is the actual LCD. Be careful not to break the small cable connecting the digitizer to the LCD. Here is a close-up of the circuitry on the screen. The large ribbon cable on the left goes to the LCD. The open connector to the right of the Sony chip is the connector plug to the Palm's mainboard. The cable/conector on the far right is to the digitizer. After doing your required repair, put it back together. This should be easier. Make sure you remember every screw. Note: The screen will only work if you plug it in and then plug the battery back in. If you have the battery plugged in and then plug the screen in, it will not work. Good luck. If there is anything you want me to emphasise on and clarify, please tell me and I'll add it to the original post. The pictures are by me and can be found here http://photobucket.com/albums/a267/Legodude522/

Did it maybe overheat with the button down all night long?
It is about 2 years old and it was working fine yesterday.
Recharged overnight and still won't come on?

 Re: Bent Pin
legodude522 wrote: kinza wrote: Well I'll see what I try to do. I think the pin may have gotten bent, is that what happens when you shove a 3.5 mm jack through the port? Also, I notice your guide here but I am still unsure how to get to the dc jack. If I go in and try to unbend the pin is it likely that I will break the pin? And what happens if I do break it? The screen whine has been bothering me for a while now, but I'm still apprehensive to open the PDA because that would void the warranty. What do I have to adjust to fix the screen whine? I know where the digitizer is according to your guide, what should I do once I see it? Thanks a lot! I'll do the screen whine repair for a fee. Legodude522@gmail.com You may find this thread useful- http://www.palminfocenter.com/forum/vie ... hp?t=29956I don't see what you have to lose by trying to bend the pin back into place. Unfortuantly I got no more of those plugs avaliable, I sold my only one already.
Legodude let me start off by saying what everyone else has been saying thanks for the help.
I was having the same charging problem with my 72. The pin appeared to look bent.
After using your instructions on how to take the 72 apart, I found that it wasn't bent but pin was in fact moving.
I have put solder on the end of it and I'm hoping that will hold it now. I will post some pictures so you can see what I mean.
First pic is showing the end of pin sticking out.
Second is pin where it should be.
Third is showing pin soldered

We have ours apart and we are needing to order a new power connector because our pin broke off completely. Can you tell me what size to order and where you ordered from. Any stock numbers would be greatly apprecited as we need to get this working really soon.
Thanks for any help.
