Never being one to back away from the more unusual (read non-Windows) platforms out there, this little gem caught my eye:

Featuring (amongst other things):

Wifi 802.11b/g - Yes, this is one of the first handhelds to support 54Mbps.
Bluetooth
Alu hard case design
Linux based OS

As I said, I'm bored with the PSP, I thought I'd have a look at something with a proper OS:

Nokia picks open source for smartphone browser

Series 60 browser gets boost from WebCore and JavaScriptCore
Robert Jaques, vnunet.com 13 Jun 2005
ADVERTISEMENT

Nokia announced today that it has decided to use 'best of breed' open source software as the basis of the next-generation mobile browser for its Series 60 smartphone platform.

A key component of this open source development commitment has been Nokia's co-operation with Apple, as the Series 60 browser will use the same open source components, WebCore and JavaScriptCore, that Apple uses in its Safari browser.

The software is based on KHTML and KJS from KDE's Konqueror open source project.

Nokia intends to continue its collaboration with Apple and actively participate in the open source community to further develop and enhance these components.

\"Open source software is an ideal basis for development since it enables Nokia to leverage and contribute to speedy software innovation and development, \" said Pertti Korhonen, chief technology officer at Nokia.

\"Open source development also enables close co-operation with the industry's best innovators.\"

The new Series 60 browser will be available to all Series 60 licensees as a standard Series 60 application during the first half of 2006.

I wonder if this means I'm right about them eventually ditching Symbian for Linux for their phones -- both to scare the hell out of MS and to crush PalmSource? Wouldn't it be trivial for them to move this over to a Linuxed phone?

Nokia has a large sharehold in Symbian - they'd be shooting themselves in the foot if they annexed it. It would be nice to see Nokia become a player in the handheld market, especially if they build on the Apple partnership.

Nokia is probably majority shareholder. You Brits! Psion could have ruled the world and saved ALL of us if they'd put that OS into a portrait device. WTF is Clive Sinclair? Save us, Obi-Wan Clive!

I'm using my Sendo X more than my Palm at present (but then again, I'm being paid to use my X a lot more than my Palm). I've also still got an old *new* Revo Plus somewhere.

Some hands-on pics of the 770:

Have you seen how thin it is?

That list is very suspicious. It lists the keyboard -- but AFAIK, that keyboard *cannot* currently work with the 770. Nokia told me that for security reasons, the 770 does not broadcast its BT presence. I think this is opposite of what other devices using BT do. I think there will need to be a KB designed that can somehow \"discover\" the 770.

Mike - check your PMs. Expansys do have a habit of screwing up from time to time - my Sendo X keyboard shipped witha German manual and almost caused me to wreck it.

\"Slowness\" of the 770:

http://wifinetnews.com/archives/005403.html

I left a Comment:

>>>While it's very nice that you had hands-on with the 770, this was not the first time anyone could give it a try. I did myself at LinuxWorld here in NYC a few weeks ago. I was assured that the software was still indeed pre-production and that they are working to get rid of the slowness that was evident in the unit.

-- unlike PIC, they vet Comments before they appear, so it might not be there when you look.

Always check the 770 blog! There's new stuff!
