Rumor: What Is the PEG-C20?

Amazon now has a listing for a Sony PEG-C20, with no other details available. The price listed is $270. The "PEG" indicates this will be a Sony handheld but there currently isn't a "C" series.

Update: Several readers have pointed out that the C20 has been listed on Amazon's site for several months, so this might simply be an error.

Sony is rumored to be planning to release a new handheld soon. However, until now speculation has centered around a new member of the T series. The C20 could be the first member of a new series of handhelds from the company.

Currently, Sony has the S series at the low end of the market and the T and NR series at the high end. It's possible that Sony is gong to begin to offer a C series, which will cover the mid-range. At $270, the C20 would be comparable to Palm's m130 and Handspring's rumored Treo 90, as long as the C20 has a color screen.

At this point, almost nothing is known about the C20. However, Amazon does list a couple of compatible accessories, one of which is a portable keyboard for the S series. Unless this is a mistake by Amazon, this is a hint that the C20 might use the same HotSync connector as the S series, rather than the newer one from the T series.

The mid-range of the handheld market has never been one Sony pursued very hard. Its last mid-range model was the T400 series, which wasn't well received due to its dim, monochrome screen. Sony dropped the T415 only a few months after its introduction.

Thanks to the many, many people who sent in tips on this while I was at dinner tonight. -Ed

615 replacement?

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/21/2002 10:09:13 PM #
I thought they were going to release a higher end 615 replacement? This would make more sense to have have a 615 form factor with 66mhz better buttons and 320x480.
I guess they feel that the NR is the high end now and the next color device will be mid range to compete with the M130 and the new handspring.

This price doesn't reflect a replacement for the 615, too low for Hi-Res color, likely to be the us version of the Bluetooth Memory Stick, the price fits, as does the name (for the most part). Remember that whenever Sony creates an accessory soley for the Clie, they also start with "PEG", the keyboard is probably just a screw-up

All CLIE accessories are PEGA-something. Only the handhelds are PEG. I think the A stands for accessory.

No, this is a new handheld to compete with the m130. I guess it has a 160 x 160 color screen.

Allow me to change that, definitely not a BTMS, but possibly a CF sled or something to do with "C"onnectivity.

Oh, Screw me, its PEG, not PEGA. My new guess is its a Cellular Clie, Monochrome, but in the NR70 clam-shell style, to compete with the Treo. Purely speculatory though...

You guys are all talking out of orifices that should not be used for speaking! "I thought it was supposed to be a 480x320 screen in a T615 form factor..." That was wild speculation to begin with when it appeared on this forum a few days ago. It is not a fact. You may be right -- I'm the first to admit that I don't know what Sony has up its sleeve. Speculate if you must but be aware that NO-ONE knows and that ALL BETS ARE OFF.

Sounds Intresting

Hope more details come to light soon. I've been looking for a mid-range color PDA and don't like the M130 much. Damn!!! now I'll have to decide between the Treo90 and the C20!

Thanks, this is the first I've heard of it. It still might be real but I think it is a long shot. Sony does need a mid-range model and a C series for about $270 would fit the bill.

I think that "C" stands for 160x160 color and that it will simply be a color S360.

When the protoype of the NR series was shown, pleople believed that it would be a long way off before we'd see it on market. Yet a few months later, any Joe can buy it at BestBuy.

Just look at the large number of new modles of MD players Sony had made in the past few years. It's likey that Sony will repeat it on their PDA line.
