Alltell?!?!?!?!
who is alltell

Yeah. AllTel as a first carrier choice is odd. I'd have actually wagered money that Verizon (or even Sprint PCS) would have been first.

OH well...

blue9 @ 12/19/2002 3:35:46 PM #
Heck, add AT&T Wireless to that list also. I currently have the v60i and was really close to upgrading to Motorola's T720 recently. This phone/pda seems to be functionally better, and looks to be the same form factor as the T720 =)

"The Kyocera 7135 smartphone will be available from major United States carriers within 6 weeks..."

I hope it's not Sprint. They have the worst coverage in my area. Even though the quality of their calls is quite good (and calls one minute or less were free!) it's no good if you can't connect. Sprint seems to suck up all the really great phones. (My LG-510 is-- ok, but the menu and graphics- suck, and are mediocre, respectively.

verizon has been berry berry good to me, and I hope they get the 7135. I'm due for an upgrade, and I really like this phone. I normally don't like PDA/phone combos, but this looks very do-able.

Time to e-mail Kyocera.

AT&T is not a CDMA carrier, so that's not going to happen.

I live in Maine. It's TDMA only around here (i think it's
much longer range than the others)
It's a sweet looking device, but:
No Bluetooth.
Small screen.
Lo-res. (you're kidding right? go from my N760 to that?)
A-GPS is not GPS. It's in compliance with federal regs to allow
the 911 system to locate you. It doesn't mean you can use
GPS software with it.

Sorry for the negative post, but i think i better represent the target
consumer for this type of product. Gorgeous pictures though!

RE: Alltell!
Marty1781 @ 12/20/2002 11:42:04 AM #
Sorry but you are obviously not the target consumer for this product. First of all, TDMA is the worst of the big three (GSM, CDMA, TDMA) and as such, all major carriers are moving away from it. Bluetooth is not needed for this device because the Palm and phone are already present. And if you need BT for some other purpose, it has a SDIO slot where you can add a BT card. Finally, this device is clearly marketed as phone first, Palm second, which is obviously not what you are looking for so you are not the target consumer. And finally, A-GPS has the capability to be used in a similar fashion as a regular GPS unit, the services just need to be implemeneted. This device is obviously not for you but just because it doesn't fit your needs doesn't mean it is a flop. There are a LOT of people anxiously awaiting this devie, chekc out www.smartphonesource.com and you will see just how many.

Bought the 7135 through Kyocera/GetConnected.com. Phone arrived promptly. But was programmed wrong. Alltel also assigned me a phone number outside my area code. Rectifying problems with Alltel and GetConnected.com is a nightmare. Love the hardware -- but Kyocera/Alltel/GetConnected.com relationship is not ready for primetime. Am likely to return it and buy later when a real vendor carrier can provide customer service.

I hope they will release a European version. I wonder if the size is pretty much the same as treo 270 or is smaller. Treo is large.

But anyway the device looks awesome and I will probably buy it when it arrives to Europe with maybe some improved functions.

Long live PalmOS!!!

They'll have to redo the radio as it won't work with GSM.

This is a spot on beautiful [combo] phone. If anyone is paying attention - here's one move wishing that it was GSM or that a GSM version will be produced. I actually like my provider and don't have the desire to jump ship for the sake of a phone...

Xizor @ 12/19/2002 3:46:12 PM #
I'll second that... we need GSM!

it says in the article referenced to about this phone that "(the) phone is an ounce heavier and a bit thicker than the Treo."

Treo 270:

4.2 x 2.8 x .7 5.4 oz.

Kyocera 7135:

4.0 x 2.4 x 1.1 6.6 oz.

smaller height & width, but thick and heavy as a brick. Still, Treos don't have GPS, SD slot, 16 bit color, and MP3 capability!

Tally ho! I'm in!

A GSM 7135?

Kyocera is a leading CDMA company, having taken over Qualcomm's (the grand poobah of CDMA) handset arm.

I would give snowballs in hell better odds ;-)

GSM can't have *all* the cool phones...

I'm a GSM nut myself, and I do like the look of that phone but I do agree with you, it's time for our CDMA brothers and sisters to get some cool wireless tech!

Don't be so sure. It may not be a 7135, but Qualcomm have released a hybrid chip that works on both CDMA (their read and butter) and GSM (wherre they would like to have their cake and eat it too). Given the relationship between Qualcomm and Kyocera, I wouldn't be surprised if we see that chip in a Kyo phone first ... and a hybrid like the 7135 would be perfect for introduction in the European market.

Our Long National Nightmare is (almost) Over

kevdo @ 12/19/2002 9:18:56 PM #
Ironic that the first carriers aren't in the state (Calif) that Kyocera is based...

Still waiting for Verizon or Sprint to get this, but am pleased there is now a large light at the end of the tunnel!!

hgoldner @ 12/20/2002 6:34:18 AM #
According to another site (Smartphonesource), the reason Verizon and Sprint have held up the release is that there is a problem with the 7135's initial synch with an existing Palm User's desktop.

That is, you can't get there from here.

If you are starting from scratch, you're fine, but if you want to get what's in your current Palm unit into the 7135, there's issues.

Expected releases for Sprint/Verizon vary from mid January to as late as April.

Already a couple of weeks ago, a Verizon rep told me that they would carry this Kyocera soon--but I want the T608 or some other bluetooth phone for a Tungsten modem.

Thanks, Robrecht

Thanks for visiting the site and getting in touch with the User Community! I'm sure that database will be very useful for some of us, so thanks for pointing that out. :)

Good luck with the launch!!

Palm OS version and memory

jsulmeyer @ 12/19/2002 10:36:48 PM #
I'm assuming it's running OS4.x like the Tungsten|W but I haven't seen anything in print. Does anyone know? What about the amount of RAM?

RE: Palm OS version and memory
mashby @ 12/20/2002 12:26:33 AM #
OS 4.1 with 16MB of RAM. Also the screen is not Hi-Res, but it is a nice color screen.

hi-res or not

carioca76 @ 12/20/2002 2:39:07 AM #
I have a clie t615 & a lg 510. I would like to combine the 2 but haven't found another pda with better features than my clie. The screen res is just prefect. Great for avantgo websites, pictures, excel spreadsheets, & just plain a ton of text on one screen.
I have read the new palm tungsten doesn't compare to the high res of the sony. How does the kyocera compare?
this has the same memory & also has expansion possibilities. I'd love to get it but can't live without the excellence of the sony screen.

RE: hi-res or not
rsc1000 @ 12/20/2002 2:51:44 AM #
>>I have read the new palm tungsten doesn't compare to the high res of the sony

What do you mean doesn't compare? Its 320x320 - just like yr 615 - and all Sonys except the NR/NX models because of the virtual graffiti. the kyocera is old, low-res 160x160. In terms of a convergent device, i think the tungsten W has the best res. It is OS4.1 but it has OS 5 hi-res API and does 320x320.

RE: hi-res or not
TDS Computer @ 12/20/2002 8:12:03 AM #
i may be wrong, but does'nt the tungsten T actually use a Sony manufactured screen?

Visit us at www.tdscomputer.com
RE: hi-res or not
Marty1781 @ 12/20/2002 2:38:00 PM #
the tungsten W also requires the use of a headset and uses GPRS, which has greater global coverage but is spotty at best here in the US and is considerably slower than the CDMA 1xRTT networks used by Sprint and Verizon.

RE: hi-res or not
JKingGrim @ 12/21/2002 9:51:12 AM #
Oh yeah! The Tungsten|t's screen was designed by SONY engineers, although it was NOT in collaboration with SONY.

RE: hi-res or not
Palm_Otaku @ 12/24/2002 5:32:35 AM #
Are you sure about that?

I'd read that Palm Inc. had a few ex-Sony personnel on staff but I'd never hear it related to the screens.

I also know that some Palm models have used Sony screens as components - but don't know if the T|T uses a Sony screen or not.

The Phone

Kevybehr @ 12/20/2002 9:59:16 PM #
Hi folks. I beta tested the phone from September through early december. The phone has some great features and some drawbacks. While the phone is smaller than its predecessor, it is bulky and heavy. The screen is not high res. The phone does have decent battery life and I tested it out on the Verizon system , so I assume verizon will have a version out soon, for those who were wondering. If anyone has any questions I'll be happy to answer them.

Real GPS and the Kyocera

mom1 @ 5/6/2003 11:32:02 AM #
I currently have the older Kyocera and am looking to upgrade to the 7135. My wife too. My wife is also asking about a handheld GPS system and I know there are some on the market that connect to the Palm (or so I've been told), but I don't want to carry two devices. Is there anyone who knows if there is a way to make the Kyocera act like a handheld GPS.
