Too late for Xircom?

jayhawk88 @ 5/8/2001 9:06:29 AM #
If those 802.11 modules had been available 6 months ago, I would have put Visor Platniums and the modules in 50 odd student hands. As it is, we're looking at Kyocera's now, which are pretty much a better solution overall.

I'm curious to see what everyone else thinks: do units like the Kyocera 6035 and the upcoming Samsung model make something like this Xircom obsolete?

God, I wanna go to your school, hehe

One helluva rich school! Visor Platinums for students?!?!?

We gave 'em Palm 5x's last October. Keep in mind this is a small-ish medical school: 30-40 is an average incoming class. Some of the money comes from grants by medical associations, hospitals, and what not. Keep those future doctors in technology, get them working at your hospital down the road is basically what it comes down to.

Oh, and I mistyped: if we would have gone that way, it'd have been Visor Deluxes, not Platniums.

Xircom Obsolete? No.

Eston Bond @ 5/8/2001 9:28:02 AM #
Xircom's 802.11b is a different thing altogether. First, the Kyocera is cellular. The Xircom adds networking to existing devices and is a different protocol as well (I don't think the Kyocera is 802.11b enabled).

SD cards

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 9:48:30 AM #
Will these cards be the full speed (10 MB/s) cards promised by the SD group?

SD vs. MMC

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 10:00:31 AM #
Feel foolish for asking, but what is the difference between the SD cards and the MMC ones as memory cards? Are SD card transfer rates faster?

RE: SD vs. MMC
PFloyd @ 5/8/2001 12:35:38 PM #
There's some reading on this at the SanDisk site.
http://www.sandisk.com/oem/sd_card.asp and http://www.sandisk.com/oem/mmc.asp. I haven't read anywhere what the Bus Transfer Rate of the Palm's are. I don't know if they can take advantage of the better speed of the SD. I have an MMC card and I'm not super impressed by the speed. It's pretty neat, etc. but a little slower than I expected. I don't know anyone who has both. We could ask 'em.

RE: SD vs. MMC
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 1:53:30 PM #
So far everything I've read says that the current SD cards are no different in speed than the MMC cards. Future cards supposedly will be faster. One question I have is regarding the physical size of the cards. I read that the MMC cards are thinner than the SD cards. If this is true, how well does it fit in the m505's SD slot? Does it have a lot of play in it and rattle back and forth? Or is there some kind of spring in there that keeps the thinner MMC card snug?

Also, just a little side note... I'm writing from Hawaii and we have one Office Max store that is the sole distributor of Palm products on this island. I spoke with them last night and they said that they just started getting the Handspring Edge in and the m505 should be arriving shortly in a couple of months!!! They still don't have the m500 in yet! So for us unfortunate ones here, sad to say, the Palm preorder is still the way to go.

PFloyd @ 5/8/2001 4:21:12 PM #
The MMC card seems very secure in the slot. It doesn't rattle or anything.

I'm also from Hawaii (actually Kauai) and we don't even have a store here that carries any Palm stuff! Have an order waiting at CDW...ahh, the price of paradise!

$$$

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 12:02:36 PM #
What they are asking for for this module is a lot of loot. Considering that an Airport card for the Mac costs about $80... If it were about $100, I would consider it. Otherwise, no way.

Preorders?

xynos @ 5/8/2001 12:55:03 PM #
Is it me or is every damn new products available through preorders? Anyone sick of it yet?

RE: Preorders?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 12:58:42 PM #
I completely agree. With the exception of Handspring (there Edge was available within days of its announcement), the PDA manufactures all lack basic Materials Management concepts in addition to basic customer service savvy. One final thought: the computing industry really need to address the issue of pre-announce of products that are not available. Products including, software (Microsoft being the most notorious) and leaks about upcoming products.

RE: Preorders?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 1:01:12 PM #
Since the Palm preorder, I feel as though I've lost my Mojo. I'll wait thank you

RE: Preorders?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 1:35:29 PM #

Like Handspring?? You mean like the bang-up job they did when they released the original Visor that ended up taking months to deliver.
Up until this most recent fiasco with the m505, Palm has been pretty good about having products ready to ship or in stores right away.

How about SD periphs?
I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 4:27:05 PM #
Anyone know of existing SD peripherals out there? Or even soon to be released ones?

Where can we find more info on this?

ED - Re: FLAT mode...

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 7:27:18 PM #
How about having FLAT mode from the MAIN PAGE? This way, users don't have to go through 3 pages to get to flat mode for a particular article/comments text. Have a "Read Article/Comments-Normal" and a "Read Article/Comments-FLAT" from the MAIN PAGE.

thanks

Also, what are the chances of doing a redesign with fewer nested tables? Your pages take forever to appear in Netscape Browsers. Some of the articles with 200-300 comments take a good 10 seconds to load!

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/8/2001 8:11:34 PM #
That is 10 seconds on a T3 connection....

I know Ryan is looking into changing changing how these comments work. He hasn't made any decisions yet so your feedback is appreciated.

For the short term, if you register you can specify to always have articles open in flat mode. That's what I do.

Palm m500 carrying cases

Telengard @ 5/8/2001 10:33:26 PM #
Anybody know if the Palm m500 Leather Zippered Case is available at Office Depot, Staples or one of the other retailers yet? Palm still has it has a pre-order and probably will for another 6 weeks or better knowing them. I have the slim case now and I'm not to pleased with it. I have three SD cards in it and the cards seem to slip around a bit. I am worried about them falling out since they are in the case horizontal instead of vertical like the Zippered Case.

MMC Card

Daniel @ 5/9/2001 7:27:53 AM #
I have a M505 with a 64 MB. I find
the card a little slow. It can take up to 3 minutes to load md photo application (I have 30 Megs of pictures on my card). Are the SD cards faster?

802.11 - embrace stndr

nabs @ 5/9/2001 10:32:45 AM #
the xircom springboard is a great addition. embrace itfor the same reason you embrace the palm... a more open standard is always going to yield better results. the kyocera uses the open palm system -- but the transfer protocol is sprint pcs -- highly proporietary and recognized to likely be the last wireless provider to go to higher-speed data access (cingular being the first). take 802.11 as the broaband (local area) answer for the foreseeable future
RE: 802.11 - embrace stndr

Hopefully xircom will come out with an M50x series 802.11 so we can use it here at the Mayo Clinic

SD Confusion

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/10/2001 2:21:37 AM #
After reading many MMC vs SD posts I am still very confused. How is it possible there are SD cards and SD slots on the market but they have not fully set the standards for the format? And how does one find out the speed of an SD or MMC card? People have mentioned on these boards that MMC is 2 mb/sec and current generation SD is 2.5 md/sec. I cannot find documentation to back up those numbers on the web or packaging. And how are consumers supposed to know when the cards speed up and can the palm utilize them? Any help would be appreciated. And please don't give me links to posts that just repeat what I just said.
Thank you.
