Comments on: 'Always On' Wireless Modem Coming Next Month

For many months, Motient has been promising to release a wireless modem for the Palm V series that will offer 'always on' service. The MobileModem will finally be available in mid-November, according to Cnet. It will allow both wireless Web browsing and sending and receiving e-mail. The modem can receive messages even when not connected to the Palm and can wake the Palm up when an e-mail is coming in. It will cost $260 alone or $180 with a one-year service contract. The service will be $50 a month.

Whoop... USA again...

mtg101 @ 10/5/2001 10:22:31 AM #
Great - more data only coverage for some parts of one country...

another company perfers a single country market over the rest of the world...

I'm getting bored of this...

Cheers

Top it off with the most expensive wireless cost if I'm not mistaken. For $600 per year, the hardware should be FREE! I can't believe they only give $80 off, that's not even TWO MONTHS of service! Sure, it's always on, but so is my cell phone. I'd rather just use SMS on my phone, and dialup when I need mail and stuff.
They're going to be showing off their things to all the PUGs around the country, but at that price, and in this economy, they're gonna fall on their arses. (can I say asses? we'll see ;-)
For the icing on the cake, the filthy-rich and early adopters they're obviously targeting have all moved onto m505's or m500's, so this modem is useless to those people! What a joke!

Too expensive!

I mean, that's great and all, but that price is just a little too high - especially the initial cost of the modem. While Omnisky users are used to getting the shaft, there has been a big shift in the market since Omnisky was introduced. PDAs have generally become cheaper, and there are more options for wireless connections now. Considering that this modem was designed for use with a $400 device that now costs about $200, the modem should cost only $99 at most, and wireless service should be closer to $30 a month.

Personally, I'm going to wait and see what happens with the new Palm and Handspring wireless units.

I agree, the price is a killer. Instead, I changed my cell phone to a data capable one, then paid an extra 6 bucks for wireless data service. It's not always on, but I can live with that for the price difference. Having free off peak and weekends helps... checking email uses less than 2 minutes of airtime during regular hours.

Palm V?

wew, so much for the universal connector.

Palm, where are you?

While I was looking to the new wireless Palm as my next device, this may work since I have a Palm V. Maybe this will prod Palm to move (though I doubt it).

MMM MMM Good!
