Comments on: Quickies: Clié ROM Upgrade, Audrey, VisorCentral

Tony Rudenko's PalmPilotUpgrade.com has just begun to offer a Sony Clié N710C/N760C Flash ROM upgrade. It will allow users to have an additional 4MB of power-independent memory. -Tony Rudenko

3com's failed Audrey, which could HotSync with a Palm OS handheld, is now on TigerDirect's website for just $90. The hacker community has figured out how to do things like add different browsers, listen to streaming MP3s, replace the ROMs with CF cards, etc. More about how to hack the Audrey is available here. -Matthew McClintock

AUDREY/MAC -> Home Automation Tool!

I.M. Anonymous @ 10/22/2001 12:11:21 PM #
http://www.shed.com/tutor/audrey.html

This is a website for XTension, a program that is used with X10 interfaces and the Mac. They have an EXTENSIVE tutorial on the Audrey, and how to work it into your system.

You can even run VNC on it, so that the Audrey in effect becomes a remote workstation for your computers wherever they might be...

Just thought I might pass along the info. I have an iBook with Airport, so the point is kind of moot for myself - but for others looking for a remote workstation/remote control for X10 devices, its well worth the loot!

Wi-fi with Audrey?

I.M. Anonymous @ 10/22/2001 2:00:00 PM #
Just searched the message board reffered to above and found no info on this. Does anyome know if the Audrey suppors any USB (or any interface) 802.11b adaptors? If so, I will puck one up today. Thanks!

I'm not sure it'll work with anything but the 3com USB Ethernet adaptor, or the built in modem - however, as it uses QNX there's a good chance you could find a USB 802.11b card driver that would work with the Audrey (if such a driver exists).

But the Audrey needs a powercord, anyway, so wouldn't a regular ethernet cable be easier?

Not necessarily. I have a power cord in my kitchen, but no Cat5 ethernet cable jack. Wi-Fi on the Audrey would be AWESOME.

Please help me if you have Audrey

I have been reading about Audrey and I really like the sound of it. I have an M505 and wanted to know if you can hotsync through the usb port. I have found many references to the serial port but none for the usb. Thankyou

I don't have an Audrey but I looked back at my original article on it and found this
The Audrey also offers a serial port for your Palm cradle, 2 USB ports, built-in stereo speakers and microphone for voice e-mail and audio output for external speakers.
I can't tell you for sure if these USB ports will work with your cradle but it seems likely. Don't forget, when that article was written, most cradles were serial not USB so hooking a cradle to the USB port wasn't much of an issue.

I'm not 100% sure, but we got one when they first came out and they seemed very limiting. The USB was for the USB/Ethernet (3COM special one only) and the serial port for hot sync. Now that they are hackable, someone might figure out how to use the USB to sync.

The best bet is to IR sync, but I'm still searching for the 'how-to'

I currently trying to get ours back from the closet it ended-up in.

Bad news....The pirate update server went off line this last weekend. Someone will volunteer to get updates out, but it's not a sure thing.

Search the Audrey discussions and mabey you'll get the anwser???

i just picked one of these up today. i also did a quick search on 'audrey' on the site, and found that you can get doa units for $19. i didnt think it would be a bad idea to get one of these for spare parts.

this should be fun.
