WordSmith - Details on upgrade

I.M. Anonymous @ 1/31/2002 8:15:01 AM #
As a regisered user, here is what I had received from Blue Nomad regarding the new release of WordSmith.

- New & Improved Spell Checker & Dictionaries from DDH Software, Inc. (www.ddhsoftware.com) features: (1) Speed optimization. New indexing provides speeds upwards of 40 words/second during spell check. This is a dramatic improvement over the previous version; and (2) Words ending in 's are now marked as correctly spelled if the rest of the word is correctly spelled.

- Misc. enhancements and bug fixes.

This update is free to all registered users of WordSmith.

The increased speed of the spell checker is true, but now mine seems to catch words as mispelled that are OK. The "proper" spelling even appears in the "suggestion" box. I get hits on simple words like "name". I will have to write Blue Nomad for an explanation.

Can you put the dictionary/thesaurus on the SD card?
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/31/2002 12:05:03 PM #
Does anyone know if you can store the thesaurus and dictionary from WordSmith on the memory card? I only use them occasionally, so it would be nice not to have them take up so much memory on my Palm.

No it does not seem to work on SD. However, I moved WordSmith and the Thesaurus into flash memory using FlashPro and they seem to work fine.

I do not have enough flash memory to also move the Dictionary but it would probably work there as well.

Couple of things:
1)Unfortunately my experience is that WS and all its files have to be in RAM to work properly. I've heard people mention successful solutions using PIDirect, but I'm a AutoCF/Megalauncher user, so I'm not sure how they're doing it.

2) I had troubles with the new spell check also, and I was in the middle of composing an email to bluenomad when, on a whim, I tried removing my old user dictionaries to see if that would help. Sure enough, there seemed to be a compaibility issue with the new version and the old user dics, so now it works fine.

3)Fast VFS Save means that the PDA saves to its own RAM before saving to the card. It takes up a chunk of memory, but it's supposedly a little faster (f.y.i, hit the little "i" in the right corner of that menu screen and it'll tell you about it; just so ya know :-)

Wordsmith kicks all forms of izzass!

...In accordance with the prophecy...

Monopoly

I.M. Anonymous @ 1/31/2002 10:21:53 AM #
Regarding the port of Monopoly to the Palm OS....

This is an amazing replica of Monopoly. The game play is fast (the computer players don't waste time thinking about whether to buy or not), the rules for Monopoly are authentic (auctions, rolling doubles to get out of jail, etc.), and multiplayer play via IR is a blast as well. The graphics are great for a Palm m505, although somewhere down the line, a 320 X 320 version would be nice too. But, we take what we have, and this game does that, and then some...

For those interested in buying this game for less than $29.95, if you buy from the company website (use the PIC link above), and use "monopoly20off" as your coupon code (no quotes), this will discount your order by 20%. Order before tomorrow though!

I have been a palm user for over two years, and this is the first program I have put money down on (I thought it was worth the price they were asking), and let me say, I'm quite impressed. Clie users can't play it in high-res mode, but the game still looks great. There are a few things I would like to see added, like a high score, but what a great game for version 1! The game plays fast and the computer isn't too 'stupid' when making trades.

RE: Monopoly vs Minipolis?
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/31/2002 12:29:56 PM #
Just curious if anyone who has tried this can compare it to Minipolis? I bought Minipolis a while back because I wanted a Monopoly clone, and was quite satisfied with it, but I'm curious how the two stack up.

Just curious about this clone, patent, etc thing.
Can I make a software that is similar to Monopoly,
but call it a different name without causing
any legal trouble?

My interest is more in other games. There are
many wonderful games that are not on Palms yet,
I just wonder how to proceed if I am interested
to make one of those on Palm.

Yes, they have done a great job. Here's a tip: tap on one of the properties on the main screen. When you do, it brings up the deed. If you click on the arrrow, you will see the owner and the current rent. If you own it, you can purchase or sell houses and hotels, or mortgage and unmortgage the property without going thrugh the other screens!

there's actually a GREAT free Monopoly clone which is, unfortunately, in French. I emailed the author and he is working on translating it into English...needs the info from the English deed cards, etc.

I'm not sure if I'm gonna register...I'm still using the freeware that Scrabble is based upon (Niggle) without any problems....

I just got paid on Tuesday, so I still have some money...CONVINCE ME!!!! :-)

Monopalm looks interesting, lets hope that computer players are available in time for the english version as at the moment it looks like human only.
I would really like to try a demo of Monopoly as I don't like buying palm software i cant try, the quality is very variable.

I didn't realize that there was no demo available for Monopoly. If you are proficient with a newsgroup reader...ya could get lucky! ;-)
