Comments on: Palm Releases m515 and m130

As has been rumored since January, Palm has just officially announced two new color models, the high-end m515 and mid-range m130. The m515 is the replacement for the m505 and is quite similar, adding a brighter sidelight and more memory. The m130 is a color version of the m125. Both run Palm OS 4.1 and have 16-bit color screens.

Palm Says Bluetooth is at Core of its Connectivity Strategy
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 9:56:38 AM #
Both Palm m130 and m515 handhelds will be available for sale on Thursday. Both have SD card expansion slots and wireless capabilities using the Bluetooth Secure Digital Input/Output (SDIO) card, which is priced separately at $129. The new offerings complement Palm's wireless-ready I705 handset, released in January.

Palm's $129 Bluetooth SDIO card is a stand-alone product that is already available in most international markets, the company says; multilanguage versions are scheduled to be available April 4. The Bluetooth card enables users to create a "personal area network," the company says, whereby consumers can wirelessly send data from their handheld to their Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone, laptop, or printer.

Experience true connectivity, without the burden of wires. Discover Bluetooth -- technology that makes it easier to communicate, collaborate and connect.

Bluetooth links your Palm™ handheld to other nearby devices, such as mobile phones, laptops, printers, accessories and even other Palm handhelds. It's like having a universal remote for the kinds of devices you use every day. And it's as easy as switching on the lights.

What Bluetooth can do.
Think of Bluetooth as a wireless USB technology. It supports both point-to-point, and point-to-multipoint connections. This enables you to connect with a single device, a single person, or several people and/or devices at once.

Perhaps you're on the road and want to access the Internet. Your Bluetooth-enabled Palm handheld and mobile phone (you pick the carrier) make great companions. Bluetooth establishes a connection between your handheld and mobile phone wirelessly, so you can browse the web or check your email. Your mobile phone can even automatically dial any number from your handheld Address Book.

m505

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 12:46:56 AM #
The m505 has been retired according to Palm's website, as it is now residing in the Hall of Fame. I guess Palm *did* realize how pathetic the screen was, only 8MB of memory, was eager to shove it under the rug.

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 12:54:32 AM #
Really? Hrm... I wonder how this works out for people who buy into those Extended Warranty dealies? Break my m505, take it in, oh no... m505 doesn't exist anymore, guess you'll have to give me a new m515 instead. Hee hee.

Aussie ?

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 3:25:59 AM #
Anyone know when they will become available in Australia ?

RE: Aussie ?
IanJD @ 3/4/2002 4:21:29 AM #
Or Europe?

RE: Aussie ?
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 4:26:48 AM #
Well Dixons (Slough UK) had one locked behind a glass cabinet on Saturday. Wouldn't let me look at it and didn't have a price on their computer for it as "It's not been released yet" they said.

So my take is that it'll be available in some numbers in the UK this week (although the UK portion of the Palm Web site hasn't any details yet ... 9.25am 4th March).

RE: Aussie ?
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 4:29:58 AM #
Sorry - I refer to the Palm M515 (didn't see the M130)

RE: Aussie ?
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 6:39:53 AM #
Yes, and I can't wait for the m500 price drop to come through to Aussie RRP (so-called 'recommended retail price', which is virtually mandatory). The m515 sounds great but I don't need the colour screen - so m500 here I come!

RE: Aussie ?
IanJD @ 3/4/2002 8:30:53 AM #
In the UK, www.expansys.com and www.dabs.com are now listing the m515, at just over £320, the former are inviting pre-orders, dabs are taking orders and listing March 12th as expected delivery date.

RE: Aussie ?
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/7/2002 11:19:42 PM #
The Palm M515 is available in Australia as a NON-import model, with full Australian warranty, etc from www.ozemobile.com . It is not advertised on their site yet, but you can pick it up by contacting tcrichton@ozemobile.com . The price is $999 plus postage and insurance (usually ~$15). They ship to anywhere in Australia. This is a very competitive price and is on par with the cost of the M505 in most places.

What will be the next Palm device?

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 3:46:14 AM #
Since PalmInfoCenter was so good at predicting the m515/m130, what hot new device(s) will Palm be coming out with next?

RE: What will be the next Palm device?
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 10:33:37 AM #
I don't think it'll be anything revolutionary until OS5, but Palm did oddly leave a gap in there numbers for the m5xx series. I think a m510 will be out soon (16MB ram m500), maybe built in BT? :)

RE: What will be the next Palm device?

m525, same as m515 but built-in bluetooth, OS 4.1
m135, same as m130 but 16 megs of RAM, OS 4.1
i715, color i705, still 8 megs, OS 4.1
m900, Treo competitor, b&w, 16 Mb, SD, color m905, OS 5
m300, mid-range multimedia palm, color, 16 Mb, MP3, dual SD, (looks similar to i715, but shorter rounded top.) StrongARM, OS 5

LoL ... funny that you are comparing a totally new PDA to a PDA released a year ago. And you know there's so much brightness you'll need, but seriously the brightness of the old Palm M505 just pathetic. Just by looking at the pic, I'd say the M130 got a really bright screen, that's good news, but again it doesnt have a high res screen.

Bravo Palm, you released the palm that you should've released a year ago.

I just compared all of the devices.... clie n760, t615 and palm m505, m515, m130 and visor prism....
the prism is the brightest followed by the clie n760, t615, m515, m130, and last m505......
actually the t615 and m515 arent too different.

Switching from 505 to 615
jsbx @ 3/4/2002 11:21:26 AM #
I am going to take a gamble and try the sony 615c for a while. I have been using palm for many years, but figure the only way to get a good idea about the different products is to try them out for myself.

I sold my 505 on Friday and placed my order today from the US (I am in Canada) as the 615 is not available in Canada.

Based on the price I bought at, even if I don't end up liking the clie, I will be able to sell it for a good price up here and swithc back to the 515. The 615 will be an easy sell up here as people are worried about ordering from the US online etc.

So I will post back from time to time, on my impressions of the clie and to let you know if it was a "good" decision.

Keep up the great work ed.

Just bought an M130 (in Canada, $450 CDN). Very impressed with the colour screen. Its great without the backlight and brilliant with the backlight. Compared to my Vx, the styling/feel is a little cheap, but then again it is a colour, expandable Palm which cost me less than my Vx did.

Digitizer works perfectly, by the way.

European charger - Palm Store ?

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 4:55:59 AM #
Is it possible to buy Palm m515 on american site (store.palm.com), but with europan charger ? Or maybe with universal charger, like this from Palm V... I just don't want to wait for europen site. They are usually late with new models.

RE: European charger - Palm Store ?
IanJD @ 3/4/2002 5:24:30 AM #
No, Palm US won't sell overseas, and they clamped down heavily on US retailers doing so about a year ago. I'd definitely recommend buying locally in any case with a new model; I went through 4 m505s in rapid succession, I wouldn't have wanted to ship each one back to the US. The main drawback with the Euro versions is the lack of Flash space because of all the extra languages, but JackSprat sorts that out very nicely.

RE: text error
ColonelKlink @ 3/4/2002 10:49:11 AM #
It's nice to have flash ROM, I have an m505 and store programs in there with FlashPro. It can be a hassle if you do a hard reset and forget to take the programs in ROM out of the backup directory.

As for OS upgrades...how useful is that? Just like OS 4.1 upgrade for my m505....

RE: text error
Altema @ 3/4/2002 2:06:10 PM #
ColonelKlink, I keep apps in ROM also, but I've only had to do a hard reset once. I found a few work arounds, like removing the apps in rom from your backup directory before a restore.

You can't do this when restoring from the Palm Backup card, so you just have to hope you have enough free RAM! One thing that seems to work even better than the Desktop restore or a Palm Backup card restore is the restore function in McFile. It only copies the RAM files and not the ROM files. Even though McFile issues a warning that the backup may not be reliable, it has worked perfectly every time. You need to have McFile in the launcher folder on the card in case you want to recover from a hard reset while away from your desktop computer. McFile seems to tolerate being in RAM AND the card with no conflicts. The drawback with McFile, is that it seems you cannot use it to load a new device when upgrading like you can with the Desktop or Palm Backup card.

RE: text error
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 7:22:16 PM #
uhhh, what would you use flash ROM for? I mean, it's primarily there to upgrade the OS but - since PalmOS 5 won't run on non-ARM devices, then you can't upgrade to it. I suppose there might be a 4.5 in the time between now and OS 5 (early fall as i understand it) but that probably wont offer much and besides - based on Palms recent approach - they'd charge you $39 bucks for it. So unless there is 3rd party software that you want to use that makes use of the flash ROM(such as ColonelKlink and Altema mentioned), then its not really a relevant consideration anymore, until OS 5 devices.

Not necessarily. Based on what Palm has listed on their site, your theory about an OS 4.5 would be off. For current Palm owners with OS 4.x, this would be considered an UPDATE, which means it's free for download. However, for other Palm devices running OS 3.x, then of course, it would be considered an UPGRADE and would have to be purchased.

See for yourself by visiting their site at http://palm.com/support/downloads/update353.html and clicking on the links for 3.5.3 and 4.1.

Of course, Since Palm has yet to offer existing OS 4.0 owners the chance to download a OS 4.1 update, MY theory may be off as well.

m515 display problems

bradleyboy @ 3/4/2002 6:30:51 AM #
Well, I picked up my m515 at CompUSA yesterday afternoon, and all seemed to be right with the world, until...

two things, actually. First, I notice some faint "banding" horizontally across the screen; there are some variations on the whiteness of the display in several rows of pixels. This seemed minor, as it is barely noticable. But I also see now that when I use an app that displays colors across the screen (SplashPhoto, Zap2016) that I have two "stuck" pixels. One of them only seems to display red (or white) and the other only blue. Again, this is barely noticeable, but enough to bother me. And I have no idea if something like this has the potential to worsen, so back the m515 goes for an exchange. Sigh...

Peace,

bradleyboy

RE: m515 display problems
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 6:45:36 AM #
Exchange immediately.
If the pixels seem bad, then they can only get worse (i.e., dead pixels).

RE: m515 display problems
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 6:46:06 AM #
I'm looking at my newly acquired m515 and I don't see the problems you mention. If it's causing you so much distress, I'd take it back if I were you. If it's to the point where you can't sleep nights...I would return it.

RE: m515 display problems
bradleyboy @ 3/4/2002 7:07:30 AM #
Yeah, well two bad pixels with no assurance that the problem won't "spread" or worsen isn't enough to keep me from sleeping, but it is enough for me to exchange. I suppose we all have differing tolerance levels for defects. To each his/her own.

Peace,

bradleyboy

RE: m515 display problems
IanJD @ 3/4/2002 8:35:01 AM #
I had this with two m505s last year, the best test is somthing like PixelTester, freeware from palmgear. For what it's worth, after I jettisoned the m505s with this, the replacement hasn't developed anything similar, so I suspect this was a fabrication/QA problem.

RE: m515 display problems
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/5/2002 6:02:53 AM #
When I bought my m505 in May 2001, it had a pixel stuck on red in the upper left corner, so I exchanged it for a new one; the new screen sucked (USA), exchanged again for another USA, screen worse; exchanged for ANOTHER one (Hungary), VERY dark yellow screen, useless. So, ultimately, I went back yet again and exchanged it for - you got it! - the oritinal one with the stuck red pixel (fortunately, they hadn't yet sent it back). The stuck pixel hasn't bothered me as much as Palm's lack of concern for the customer, reflected in piss-poor quality control/engineering (not to mention some aspects of design!). Now, though my geek side and wallet both say "Go for it," I'm kinda afraid to get the m515 for fear of more unnecessary and stupid problems such as this, and others (USB). Damn! If only Sony made PDAs for Americans larger than 5'2" with fingers larger than small pencils!

Betcha the m515 problems start pouring out of the... SD slot (as opposed to the "woodwork," respectfuly, for those of you too young to know that saying or its derivation).

Graffiti area

Ambassador @ 3/4/2002 6:41:34 AM #
Ed,
It might be worth mentioning that the Graffiti area on the M515 is not back-lit like the M505 was. That was a major dissapointment for me and has caused me to re-think the purchase of a M515. I really want this and may now wait for the next model. My old IIIx that is expanded to 8 meg is still OK for what I do... If I can't see to write a note at night then color is not nearly as exciting!

RE: Graffiti area
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 6:52:15 AM #
There are some hacks out there (MiddleCaps is one of them) which address this issue. The basic idea is that they insert three small dots at the bottom of the screen, just above the the borders of the silkscreen area. With the backlight on, you can use the three dots to delimit the left and right edges of the graffiti area as well as the alpha/numeric border. These hacks might be worth a try.

PS. If you haven't already tried it, X-Master is a very good hack manager program.

RE: Graffiti area
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 7:25:24 AM #
My mistake. I see now that MiddleCaps inserts only one marker above the alpha/number border.

Graffiti Here Hack (available at freewarepalm.com and probably www.palmgear.com) inserts three dots in the way mentioned in my previous post.

RE: Graffiti area
Ambassador @ 3/4/2002 8:47:12 AM #
I tried the dot thing (might have been Graffiti Hack I don't remember). It just was not good enough for me... Too bad I'm picky, guess I'll have to bear with it or wait for the "perfect device."

RE: Graffiti area
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 9:01:14 AM #
I have to agree. I loved the lit graffiti area. I bought the m515 and was very bummed out when I found out it wasn't lit. It is such an issue for me that I returned the m515.

Ed - in your dealings with Palm, what are they/will they do about offering a lit graffiti area? I am glad I'm not alone with this issue.

RE: Graffiti area
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 9:06:10 AM #
Since the m515 screen is much brighter than the m505, there is enough of a "flashlight effect" with the m515 to brighten up the graffiti area in the dark.

RE: Graffiti area
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 4:05:01 PM #
I vote (with my $'s) with you guys. I have an m505 and I bought a Sony T615. For a variety of reasons I took it back. The reasons were: No back-lite Silk Screen, unusable front buttons (even more bizzare given the great Jog-Dial), poor battery life and awful synch software. I was considering upgarding to the m515 but based on this alone I will wait for the next new model...when ever that will be (OS5 probably).

RE: Graffiti area
tsinvest @ 3/5/2002 6:52:29 AM #
Ditto, the brightness of the M505 never bothered me and I much rather have the lighted graffiti area than a brighter screen - I will wait too for the next model which may be out prior to the end of the year - remember os5 will be out prior to the end of the year so I am sure new product will be out then too.

any rumours about hi-res device from visor?

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 7:40:33 AM #
It's time to upgrade my trusty Palm, and I really want an ultra-thin device (like Vx or m505), but with a hi-res screen. I don't want to go Sony, Handera is way too bulky, so I was hoping that Palm would produce one... Now that they rolled out this pathetic 515, my only hope is Visor -- any rumours about hi-re device from them? Or maybe Hadera has something in their plans?

RE: any rumours about hi-res device from visor?
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 7:50:30 AM #
Handpsring stopped making new models of Visors already.

As somehow you don't like Sony's products, Maybe you could "upgrade" to a Nokia EPOC device, or wait till about Sept or Oct for those new device that runs PalmOS 5.

RE: any rumours about hi-res device from visor?
james_sorenson @ 3/4/2002 11:33:03 AM #
Well, Handspring actually back-pedaled on their claim to discontinue Visors. However, I don't think they've made much money on any of the super-thin models, so I wouldn't expect much more Edge development. (Although I own a Visor, I don't blame them for concentrating on the Treo).

Anyhow, to the original poster: why do you think the 515 is lousy? The Sony Clie is the only one that comes close, but the 515 has many more peripherals. Now, if only Handspring could make a Treo with the screen and memory-expansion of the 515, I would have the perfect device.

You poor people , he is so right, M515 is so pathetic and everybody knows CLIE is the best Palm OS PDA in the market today. Is that hard to you to tell or see the truth ? God bless you.

RE: any rumours about hi-res device from visor?
c_blue @ 3/4/2002 9:07:48 PM #
Since OS 5 will support High res natively, there is no point for either handspring, or palm to make their own api, or to add their own dsp design to an OS 4 PDA. So if you want a high-res non clies palmOS PDA you will have to wait to OS 5.

Battery life better?

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 8:28:19 AM #
Sounds like a brighter screen means shorter battery life. My 505 battery life is short enough. Anybody heard of an A/B comparison for battery life on the two with light set on high? I would like to know before I buy one and can't take advantage of the nice screen because of this.

Thanks,

Read the m515 review on Brighthand (www.brighthand.com). In the review, the author shows a 10 hour battery test between the m515 and the m505.

RE: Battery life better?
Altema @ 3/4/2002 2:52:29 PM #
Hmm, twice as bright as the 505 on the low setting, and about twice the battery life of the 505? Seems like they did more than just move the light closer to the screen... anyone have stats on T615 (One of my favorites) battery life for comparison?

RE: Battery life better?
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 8:22:21 PM #
PDAforum.de notes just about 3+hrs(!) for fully charged m515 with sidelight set as High all the time. BrightHand predicts 10hrs with Low setting. Isn't it a huge difference? Let's wait for more prone battery statics arriving soon (at least for me the battery life remains the last crucial factor before going to upgrade my Vx).

RE: Battery life better?
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/5/2002 11:29:29 AM #
Boy, the Vx had incredible battery life. Battery 50%? maybe I should think about charging it next week. The Vx is a classic--maybe even Palm's finest moment.

Well, nice to see a new palm's, but I think we all desperately waiting for something like palm-with-arm or at least 320x320 clie size screen. Funny thing, Newton used StrongARM chips back in 1996 and still kick some ass. I hope Palm will colaborate with Apple and BEOS, since they realy have some nice features.

btw it would be realy nice if palm will try to add some rainproof/watterproof - that is realy no big deal.

I still use my PalmPilotPRO from stone age :) with OS3.52 and after 5!! years still the longest battery life. And I won't buy new horse ... I WANT MORE!!!

RE: yax_plis

Yep, still have my Palm Pilot Pro. I found out how useful it was when my Palm Vx was getting repaired. I used it for a week or so and frankly didn't really miss the Palm Vx. The Pro does everything I need and frankly for most people it's still good enough.

Same here -- I'm still using my trusty Pro (with 2Mb+IRDa upgrade and OS3.5.2). But I do feel a need to upgrade, and my perfect device would be an M515 with 320x320 display.

Although I'd also settle for a color 320x320 GSM triple band Treo as well :)

Just to be picky - I believe the Newton used the ARM6 or 7. The StrongARM came out of a collaboration between ARM and DEC shortly after I think.

Got the 515 last Friday, but didn't install the Desktop application (using 4.01/505). Palm's site says the 515 ships with Desktop 4.1 (typo?). Anyone know the differences and if you can install 4.1 on top of 4.01 without breaking all your conduits.

Also could find nothing in the box or CDs to describe Palm OS 4.1 vs 4.0. The included documentation was vintage Nov 01 500 series stuff.

They are available for purchase at most of the big Dixons stores in London.

The m130 is £229

The m515 is £369

I was rather hoping that the m130 would come in at nearer £200...

Going abroad soon so may make a duty free (£190) purchase/purchase once hardware problems (inevitable?) become apparent/are ironed out.

Hope this helps

The M515 by All means.

I'm really interested in confirming Palm's claim of 2 weeks of "Normal" use on the M515. Battery life is very important to me and if this holds out to be true then it will be better than the T615's battery life.

Also, In your review of the M515 if you could please include a comparison between all the important factors of the M515 Vs. T615 (Screen, Battery, etc.)

Thank you.

RE: Ed, When's the review?
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 1:05:19 PM #
515 definitely. As I sit here with a new T615C in my hand the BrightHand report mentioned above is making me wonder if it shouldn't go back. For those of us in a cradleless world (IR hotsync to laptop) battery life is the killer app. When the T615 and m505 battery life were the only choices (and were roughly equal) the hires Sony wa an easy choice. But 50% more battery life from a 515 (again taken from the BrightHand report) would change the playing field.

RE: Ed, When's the review?
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 2:51:04 PM #
If battery life is important to you (as it is to me), you might consider buying the car charger ($9.99 at styluscentral.com against $19.99 in CompUsa).

RE: Ed, When's the review?
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 3:36:32 PM #
I appreciate the suggestion, but I'm actually not in my car that much either. My current thinking is that the InnoPocket USB sync/charge cable is the best bet as it wins both in the speed department (IR hotsync is slow) and lets me leverage my current investment in extra laptop batteries and chargers (I have extras everywhere I go).

That said, of course, it still doesn't solve my fundamental disappointment in Clie (and 505 for that matter) battery life. I'm used to charging very infrequently (never more than once every couple of days, and usually much longer). It would be nice to go a full day at work and out for the evening without having to remember to recharge so that I can use my address book that night.

So far with the Clie it looks like my daily usage pattern is such that by the end of work, I'm running low on charge already. Its the price of color screen, I know, but the hires screen does me no good if it won't turn on :-)

Its funny that as good as the Palms are getting I'm getting closer to the point where my laptop battery lasts as long (longer if I load up a second battery in the spare bay) than my handheld.

m515 has better battery life than m130 - Interesting

Scott @ 3/4/2002 11:56:39 AM #
I find it interesting that the m515 has better battery life than the m130, despite the significantly reduced size/weight. I wonder if this has more to do with the transflective screen or if Palm, Inc. intentionally hobbled the m130 so that it didn't put the m515 to shame in too many ways. Overall, I like what I'm hearing about both of these things. I just wish they had built-in Bluetooth. IMO, the Bluetooth card sticks out too much, eliminates your ability to use expansion RAM simultaneously, and is overpriced. Oh well, things should improve over time.

Actually if you only count palm Devices
1) palm (first in market, about 5 years)
2) Handspring (in market for about 3 years)
3) Sony (in market for a bit more than 1 year)

If you count all PDA Sony will be more like 4th place, with Compaq's market share slightly (1%) higher.

m505s Durability Question

Ive been researching about m505s durability compared to the Vx's because i dont wanna use any hardcase or softcase for it anymore. i want to start using the leather flip cover for it. But is the screen fragile like the VX? which means a few feet will smash it? i havent seen any m505s in palmgraveyard.

I want to know to who is using the flipcover and for how love have you been using it?

RE: m505s Durability Question
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 3:24:19 PM #
the flip cover is all you need unless you work in a rough environment OR if you are clumsy and hard on your things. If you take care of your stuff and don't work on a construction site, you will be OK with the stock cover. I prefer it because it is the lightest/least obstructive (and cheapest!)

RE: m505s Durability Question
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 3:43:10 PM #
I've used both the leather flip cover and the one from Paralleldesign.com with a Vx and an m505 (now a m515). The flip cover from Paralleldesign.com is great. It only protects the screen from scratches, etc. but it's the sleekest solution on the market. In regards to the m series durability, I've dropped mine a couple of times and it survived, but that means little. It depends on how it lands, what it lands on, etc. For day to day use, though, a hard case isn't necessary and just adds bulk.

I also use the cover by Parallel Designs on my Vx and have loved it. Anyone know if Parallel Design's m505 cover will work on the m515? (I ordered a m515 today!)

RE: m505s Durability Question
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 8:54:59 PM #
I splashed about a half thimble of water on the calender button and it trashed my m505 :( The water went up into the screen. The hard case would've saved it.

RE: m505s Durability Question
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/5/2002 12:22:05 PM #
I dropped my m505 twice... the first time it was sitting inside my unzipped portfolio, which I forgot, and when I grabbed my portfolio and got out of my truck, the Palm "flew" 2.5 feet and crashed on the cement underground parking garage. No damage. A bit of roadrash to the upper right corner by the sylus slot, but still works. The second time, I dropped it as I was getting out of my truck straight down. Luckily, still works. Like the person said before, depends on how it falls I guess.
I use the leather screen flip cover, and its OK, but the hinged part is ripping. I just picked up a Palm hard case... nice, except synching on the cradle is a bitch. Nice weight, nice finish, DENTS TOO EASILY, but I guess its better than denting the Palm itself...

if you are someone that drives a truck, you should get a heavy hard case.

m130 Faceplates

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/4/2002 1:17:18 PM #
Will the m130 have colored face-plates that are the same as the current m130/125 but with a different color on the sides? i.e. m130 is blue and silver, 125 is black and silver, will there be a red and silver? I sure hope so, or it is off to the Pocket PC I go if OS 6 is not good.

RE: m130 Faceplates
cyruski @ 3/4/2002 2:55:15 PM #
I don't think so. They have enough faceplates to last another 2 years in stock right now.

The m130 can use any of the faceplates designed for the m100 series. Despite what the troll just said, these sell well and there are dozens of possible looks, from very professional to crazy patterns. Check them out at the palm store.

Check out the CoolPlates from Pdabodyguard.com. The stars and stripes and chrome plate looks the best. In addition, PDAPals.com offers color matching flip cover m100 cases.

Enjoy

I don't think I deserve such a rude comment from an anonymous poster. I own two of those faceplates too. I just said there were enough of those faceplates and I didn't think they were going to make some more.

So What do I get?

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/5/2002 12:35:52 AM #
Does anyone have any idea when the new palm deices are comming out that have 320x320, ARM, and OS5? I want to get a palm (my first) and I want to keep it for at least 2 years. I don't want to drop 300 now and have the new ones come out this october, its worth the wait for me. Thanks for any information.

Palm has committed to releasing handhelds running OS 5 before this fall. So far, they are the only company that has anything like a definite release date. However, PalmSource will be turning the Golden Master of OS 5 over to the licensees early this summer so others should have models out around the same time Palm does.

Anyone know if the fall ARM models will be using the same Universal Connector as these new m130 and m15 models?

transflective or transmissive?

ahecht @ 3/5/2002 2:18:54 AM #
Is the m130 screen truly transflective (like the T615), or is transmissive (like the IIIc)? Since the backlight cannot be turned off, and it supposedly isn't that good in direct sunlight, it would seem that the screen is transmissive. However, the PIC description calls it transflective. I'm confused?!!

RE: transflective or transmissive?
ahecht @ 3/5/2002 2:22:27 AM #
Actually, I reread the PIC article and it never says it is transflective. Palm.com only calls it "Backlit, color screen with support for more than 65,000 colors." It is only people posting who have called it transflective, however evidence seems to point towards transmissive. The real test is the screen color when the unit is off. Is it black or grey?

RE: transflective or transmissive?
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/5/2002 9:32:42 AM #
The screen is black; I played with one at comp USA.
Not that impressed; my TRG pro will hold me over until arm. I'm not ashamed to admit I'm hoping they handera (or sony, PLEASE!) will offer a color arm model with soft grafiti. If no good arm models are out by the end of the summer I'm flirting with the idea of checking out a PPC if X-scale is already out for them. I picked up a jornada 568 and noticed you have to activate the ebook reader with MS before it works; that company is pure evil.

RE: transflective or transmissive?
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/5/2002 12:17:06 PM #
Well, if the screen is black, then that means that it is a transmissive screen, no more advanced than the IIIc (except for the ability to display more than 256 colors). Maybe Sony isn't willing to sell Palm their transflectives yet.

Palm sucks!!!!!!!!!!

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/5/2002 7:35:51 AM #
They are scaring their customers away.Every year i had to buy a new unit year 2000 palm Vx, year 2001 palm m505 and now they're coming out palm m515. Give us a break ,it's not cheap buying a palm every year.

I didn't realize that your old Palm stopped working as soon as a new model came out. That's outrageous!

m515 + Palm portable keyboard

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/5/2002 8:41:31 AM #
I got a m515 yesterday. I also purchased a Palm portable keyboard with it. When I connect the m515 to the keyboard or try to type, I get a fatal error that requires a soft reset. I downloaded the updated driver from the support site but that didn't help.
Has anyone else heard of this problem? I e-mailed Palm tech support but have no idea when they'll respond.
Thanks for any ideas.

peoples are disapointed

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/5/2002 12:05:49 PM #
I was looking at peoples appreciation of these units at computers.com. Well, the results are not very good. I must admit that I agree with peoples that the units are a bit too expensives.

M515 brighter screen..please elaborate!

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/5/2002 3:26:24 PM #
Everyone says the m515 screen is brighter. Does it just look the same as if you turned on the backlight on the m505? Or is it a completely different technology in the m515 screen

Can you read the m515 screen in direct sunlight like you can

You looked silly the first time you posted this question. You look even sillier posting it again. Here's the same answer I gave you last time:

m130 screen - plastic?

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/5/2002 4:19:38 PM #
Is the m130 screen glass or plastic? I want to upgrade from my m105, but I really want plastic. I broke my IIIx and Pilot1000 previously, but the m105 keep going strong.
Thanx!

Palm M515 in Australia !! great price !!

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/7/2002 11:23:54 PM #
Hi,

just wanted to let you all know that the new M515 is available in Australia through the distributors at www.ozemobile.com . Although it is not on their website, you can contact tcrichton@ozemobile.com and place an order there. The cost I found to be highly competitive, at $999 plus postage and insurance. This is on par with the cost of the older, inferior M505 at most places in Australia. They state that they ship to anywhere in Australia, at a cost of about ~$15.

Anyway, just wanted to let u all know ;)

Palm Deutschland/Europe

PIC mobile user @ 3/18/2002 10:28:49 AM #
FYI: With the launch of the two new Palm models, Palm Germany is also launching the Bluetooth SDIO card.
Product code: P10832US
Cost: €205.32

Time to upgrade PalmVx/Blue5 sled combo? Only if I could use the expansion port AND the BlueM, AT THE SAME TIME. Perhaps OS 5/next gen hardware...
