iGolf Technologies has launched iGolfgps, which gives golfers accurate distance measurements from any location on a golf course. It is designed to provide the distance from the point of the golfer's ball to the front, center, and back of the green. Working with a GPS receiver, it can be used on any golf course throughout the world. It also includes a scorecard for up to 4 players. iGolfgps is available now for $35.

You're kidding, right? You don't know this market, do you? There are at least two other GPS-based Palm OS golfing programs - SkyGolf and GolfwareGPS. Golfware, like iGolfgps, is shareware, and is also $35. And... are you sitting down?... SkyGolf is $400. That includes the GPS, but subtract the retail price of the Magellan GPS they supply and it still makes the software $200.

$35 is chump change compared to what most golfers have invested to play the game, and I'm not going to even get into greens fees and cart rentals.

One you graduate from high school and get out in the real world maybe you'll learn the difference between "value" and "price".

Wow, way to fly off the handle over something small. Can't we all just get along. There are enough problems in the world. The last thing we need is to get heated over some comment from some one who is just voicing opinion. Sheesh!

If you think about it he was probably basing his opinion on all the other programs available for the Palm OS, 99% of which are within $20 or less. He may not know the GPS golf market but he obviously knows the Palm OS market. Even I would have a hard time paying $35 for a GPS golf thing let alone hundreds. So, I agree with the person who wrote the first comment.

Actually, it depends on the market.

Relatively speaking, the cost of developing and supporting an application is moderately fixed, whether your end market is 100 or 100,000 users. So $20 would be reasonable for a software product that has the entire Palm OS market as prospective customers.

However, once you get into specialty or "niche" markets, the cost has to be spread over a much smaller prospective customer base. If the $20 retail target was an absolute, nobody would write special-interest software because it would cost more to write and support than could be realized in revenues.

Anyway, it's a free market, and at least from my experience with specialty software markets the iGolfgps package is priced possibly even less than what its market would bear. It's a tool, nothing more or less, and it's more than likely worth it to somebody who needs the tool.

Why would it suck to be him? And why do you have so much time on your hands to lay 'flamebait'?

If you really want to improve your game, get a PPC. It is great - whenever you fluff a shot, you can give the PPC a good whack with a 5 iron - great for taking out your frustration. Then you can get on with the game, with the quiet satisfaction.

Okay... I have to respond to this even though i never get involved in responses to our software. First i would like to introduce myself. I am the founder of iGolf Technologies which developed iGolfgps. I never intended for our company to develop a software in which so much negativity arose. To be completely honest, the software happened to be an idea of mine which i wasn't planning on sharing with anybody else. It turns out while i was on the golf course trying it out a few people asked what i was doing. I told them the concept and they became very interested. From there the concept snowballed into a full fledged idea. As for the price. We did several large surveys regarding the equilibrium price between supply and demand for this product. Although the study showed we could charge quite a bit more for the product i made the decision to keep the price low and let the consumers have a good time with it without feeling like they spent an arm and a leg for another golf tool. I think we upset Skygolfgps with our price attitude, but the bottom line was i intended for golfers to enjoy the product without worrying about the price. If they didn't like it, then they only waisted $35 unless they purchased the entire package for $150. All in all, I was only 21 when i started the company. I just turned 23 and have a pretty good size staff who are working diligently on providing updates and new services for the software(just graduated form college last week as well). We are continuing to keep the price down and hope some people will enjoy the product. For those that don't, you have my sincere apology. Hopefully this cleared up any negative aspects towards the software. If you have any direct questions please do not hesitate to send me a direct email. I get hundreds each day but do read through all of them and try my best to respond.
Thanks,

The 35 buck price is a great deal considering the alternatives. I took it out this weekend and went out early to map the holes. Took about 3 minutes per hole, and we were good to go from there. The software is a mite buggy (couple of crashes-mostly recoverable) and it has a few of my pet peeves (spelling) but it seemed to work well. If the price is too bothersome, map out your home course and upload it to the library, you get a 20 buck rebate, putting your bottom line at 15 bucks. No better deal out there as far as I could see.
