Comments on: Palm OS Leads in Retail and Enterprise Sales

According to several market research firms, the Palm OS leads the handheld market in several important categories. An obvious one is retail sales. Though Palm has long led the this category, according to NPDTechworld, the Palm OS now has 87.2% of the U.S. retail market, growing 10 percentage points in the last two months. However, this isn't the only category where it is well ahead of the competition; the Palm OS also leads in worldwide enterprise sales and smartphone shipments.

T-minus 55 minutes until the first troll post
T-minus 1 hour unitl the first "Palm is still dead" post.
T-minus 1 h, 10 mins until the first "It's just a flesh wound" post from the Microsoftees. (Apologies to Monty Python)

Gartner changes sides?

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/14/2002 11:47:39 AM #
Can it be? Are they still sticking by their "Microsoft takes over the world in 2002" forecasts?
RE: Gartner changes sides? Not really

Notice when the "news" is pro-Palm, they dont "speculate" on what that means for the future as they do when PPC grows a percent or two. This report only reports the facts. This is how all such reporting should be done

Let PPC go from 20 to 25 percent share and they will again "project" Palms demise, there PPC bias will again become apparent.

maybe M$ is their big customer.
So they have a way to pay back their customer.

These firms are so corrupted. sigh.

Handspring, are you reading this???

TDS Computer @ 5/14/2002 12:19:55 PM #
Hello, Handspring?
Sony is now within .2 Percentage points of your market share. The combined HP & Ipaq Pocket PC numbers will surpass you.

Are you SURE you want to throw everything behind the Treo? Are you SURE you want to eventually "Phase Out" the Visors? Maybe you ought to work on a handheld that people really want. Work on a Handheld that we Handspring fans have been asking for for months now. You know the one. A competitor to the M515 and Sony 760 and 615, etc...

You may still have a chance to keep your customer base if you act soon. Not all of us want a Treo, but most of us want to keep our investment in our modules.
Signed,
A loyal, yet concerened Handspring fan.

Handspring pretty much decides to exit the organzier
market.
They could not compete with Sony and Palm in this
area. And the margin is too low for them to surive.

Sorry. But you have to get over this, I think.
Life goes on. Handspring has to make its tough
decision too to surive.

Not true
The numbers for "handhelds" are seperate from those of "smartphones."
If the Treo line became so popular that it outsold Palm it would not reflect any growth in Handkeld sales figures.

Combining the Visor with the Treo, numbers not shown here, it is quite possible that Handspring has not lost any ground at all to the other companies. Remember the numbers for "smartphones" were 2001 figures. That is why the Treo was not mentioned. The Treo is going to wreak havoc in this category during the later half of this year.

Once the color cdma model is distributed though the huge Sprint channels it will dominate the "Smartphone" category, and combined with Visor will make more money than it ever has. This strategy is HS only hope of one day breaking even, and turning a profit.

the total number of Treo is only in the range of 40-60K. It's not even a blip in PDA market, nevermind phone market. It's not even number one in Palm-phone market.

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/14/2002 1:49:20 PM #
Sony is concentrating in the consumer PDA arena
Palm is concentrating in the enterprise market
Handspring is concentrating on the smartphone arena

So there is 3 companies for different needs. I mean come on... All of them uses PalmOS right?

I repeat,
"Once the color cdma model is distributed though the huge Sprint channels it will dominate the "Smartphone" category,"

I can go to my local sprint store and get a samsung. I have tet to SEE a Treo at a retail store. My office max dont have it, my Voicestream dealer doesnt either. It still is not widely available. Also people want color in a high end device. CDMA is most popular in the US 180 doesnt use it. Treo has been out only a couple of months.

All are reasons that the treo is not selling as well as it could. YET.

by the time Treo color is coming out, it would be a joke in phone industry to call it high tech phone, since there are several bleeding edge models being introduced.

Here is one with HUGE color screen and CDMA from LG.

Now, please just tell the stock market.

I.M. Anonymous @ 5/14/2002 1:53:03 PM #
Great news, but now please tell NASDAQ so the stock will rebound. I'm sure it will never hit what I paid for it, but it's got to be worth more than $3, or $4 dollars a share!
