Comments on: Palm Releases Desktop 4.1 for Windows

Palm Inc. has released a new version of its desktop client for Windows PCs. Palm Desktop 4.1 offers a desktop client for the built-in Expense app which allows users to export info to Microsoft Excel or Word. It also has the ability to automatically remove all duplicate entries from the Address Book, Date Book, To Do's and Memos. This app has been released by Palm for Palm-branded handhelds, though it will work with some models from other manufacturers. The update is free.

didn't work 4 me

I.M. Anonymous @ 7/31/2002 4:38:31 PM #
tried it on my NT 4.0 work computer. It deleted my palm desktop and hot sync manager then exited with "internal error"

Installed flawlessly on my Dell Latitude with W2000 and M505. The only thing I noticed was that it took all the categories in expense and dumped everything to 'unfiled'... so make sure that won't mess you up too bad. Otherwise, no problems.

It worked just fine in my NT 4 sp6a. It didn't erase my desktop to go conduits as I expected.

I was concerned because I had some conduits (avantgo, doctogo, worldmate, acrobat reader). But it worked fine in my win2k laptop.

reply to previous post. I have Nt 4.0 service pack 6 but it would not run. I thought it might be my CLIE when I read about the problems with this and sony products but this stops just on the install before I even connect my CLIE by serial. It might have to be installed as administrator rather than just as an account with membership in the administrator group.

I have Windows XP Pro, with all updates that are on line. And I had the same problem. Un-install old and then hang up and not finish install. Could not find user data?

Hi,

All installation went OK on my XP machine, except that when installing avantgo, the relevant (avantgo) conduit does not install itself. Can't see it in the hotsync list.

Any solution to get the avantgo conduit back ?

Installed fine on Win2000(SP2), but Desktop would not run--gives error and dies. Guess I'll go back to 4.0.1.

Anyone try it with Sony Clie T615c or similar?

Try deleting the PalmUSBD.sys file from C:\WINNT\system32\drivers and also uninstalling the 'Sony Handheld' USB driver from the Device Manager (you'll need to perform a HotSync while the Device Manager window is open so that the Sony USB driver appears in the list).

As the article says, which you apparently didn't read, "This app has been released by Palm for Palm-branded handhelds" It is up to Sony to make a version for your n610c. You are confusing Palm and PalmSource. Palm makes the m500 series, a competitor to your CLIE. They couldn't care less if your can't use this app, you bought a competitor's product. Might as well get mad at Ford because your Chevy doesn't work.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it Sony's problem and not Palm's? Can CLIÉ owners tell me if Sony comes with their own modified version of Palm Desktop?

Shouldn't the hotsync software be done by Palmsource (The same way Activesync is done by Microsoft) and not Palm? The syncronization is an integral part of a PDA OS so it should be done by Palmsourc who should produce one that works across the whole spectrum of devices.... Another of Palmsource shortsightedness....

Some prefer the simplicity of Palm desktop, ntm Outlooks tendency towards vulnerability.

I find the desktop extremely convenient and quick. I wish it could do some of the things that ActionNames does on the pda (link events to address book entries and icons). Maybe Iamic can come up with a conduit that does that, hint hint.

Definitely don't feel safe/comfortable running Outlook.

RE: The new colour schemes are nice!

Yup, Outlook scares me. I've used Palm Desktop since my Pilot 1000 days - and it still does everything I need.
RE: The new colour schemes are nice!
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/1/2002 1:12:23 AM #
I've tried syncing with Outlook, Lotus Notes, Time and Chaos, and the Franklin Planner and I keep coming back to Palm Desktop. It's simple, fast, syncs correctly every time and with little or no fanfare or extra garbage, it just gets the job done. Outlook never seemed to sync all the info correctly the first time, there were always some things buggered up. I just don't have time for that.
RE: The new colour schemes are nice!
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/1/2002 1:14:43 AM #
Once, Outlook droped my ~2000 records and reported a database error, then I gave up and decided not to use it anymore. So far palm desktop still keep all my records safely.

What a dog...

I.M. Anonymous @ 7/31/2002 7:08:14 PM #
I'm really wondering what the developers of Palm Desktop were thinking... did they even test this software? Go to the Memo Pad, put your cursor in the text of a message on the right -- logic dictates that you could actually EDIT THE DAMNED MEMO from here. No, you have to hit "edit memo" and pull up a floating window -- nearly identical to the message pane on the right -- and edit from there. It's absurd.
RE: What a dog...
I.M. Anonymous @ 7/31/2002 7:22:05 PM #
Are you on drugs? I can edit my memo's without hitting "Edit Memo". The pane on the right side is editable...

RTFM

RE: What a dog...
I.M. Anonymous @ 7/31/2002 8:16:58 PM #
Maybe it's you who's on drugs. Or maybe you aren't using the same version. In reading the effing manual for the desktop for 4.0.1, I came across:

"To edit memo text, double-click the memo."

Now, stop being such a harsh mistress.

RE: What a dog...
I.M. Anonymous @ 7/31/2002 8:34:07 PM #
You're using the old version if it says 4.0.1, the new desktop is 4.1 and it does let you edit in the pane to the right.
RE: What a dog...
Altema @ 7/31/2002 10:40:24 PM #
I can double click on either the memo list or the pane on the right to go to edit mode in version 4.0.1. If you single click on the right pane, it just moves the cursor there... you have to double click. If it does not work for you in the same version, perhaps there's a problem with your installation.

RE: What a dog...
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/1/2002 6:11:40 AM #
me again... responder 2: sorry, I should have tried 4.1 before I mouthed off, looks like they have (finally) fixed this. It's been bugging me for a loooong time though.

you other dorks: what I'm complaining about is that there was an "edit mode" at all. Do you pull up an editing window to edit a paragraph in a word processor? Of course not, you just place the cursor in the paragraph and start typing. This is real basic stuff, folks.

RE: What a dog...
Altema @ 8/3/2002 10:34:54 PM #
The memo pad is part of the Palm Desktop... it's not a word processor although some may attempt to use it as such. I see you point about it being easier if you could just click once, but some prefer a little protection against others being able to accidently mess up memo pad documents so easily. A certain toddler who likes to play with the computer mouse comes to mind :O

4K Memo LIMIT
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/3/2002 10:50:30 PM #
I hope they get rid of the 4K Memo LIMIT in OS5/Desktop 5. Can somneone please tell me WHY this was a necessary limit for OS4/DESKTOP 4 and older?

RE: 4K Memo Limit
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/5/2002 3:51:39 PM #
Fields in the Palm OS can only handle 4K of text. Since the memo is displayed in a field, the memo can only be 4K long.

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/1/2002 10:29:22 AM #
I big time agree with the first post here. I hate Outlook/Outlook Express. Why doesn't Palm put a simple email client in the desktop software and we can scrap using Outlook altogether. Is it possible to build a "plugin" for the Palm Desktop that will do this. Any developers out there want to take up the cause. I'd pay for it!

One problem with no e-mail conduit: If you use Oulook 2000 or 2002 which has the security update, the older (3.X) version of the Mail conduit triggers the security feature. Palm Desktop 4.0.1 mail conduit works fine though. Why didn't they keep the Palm Mail conduit in 4.1?

I just upgraded to 4.1. It seems OK. The themes are pretty but they sure seem to make the application feel slow.

Should have one desktop for all brands...

wilco @ 8/1/2002 1:02:04 AM #
Nowadays, it's common to have more than one PDA in a family and many times it will be by different manufacturers. I myself have a NR70V and a m130. Couldn't get it to work on Windows XP...Sony Desktop wouldn't recognize m130; Palm Desktop wouldn't recognize NR70V (even with Clie USB driver installed). Palm support is not helpful either, tell me to install Palm Desktop only But what about my other device? Does PalmSource (not Palm) have dedicated tech support?

RE: Should have one desktop for all brands...
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/1/2002 2:28:52 AM #
It will be great if one Palm Desktop works for all. But PalmSource manages and licenses the Palm OS to 3rd parties only, and 3rd parties can customize their implementations.

If PalmSource is going to restrict what 3rd parties can and can't change so much, I think it maybe too restrictive and may hamper innovations.

Also 3rd parties may like to customize their implementations so to make a difference between theirs and others' products, that means it's a "designed incompatibility".

RE: Should have one desktop for all brands...
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/1/2002 6:38:43 AM #
Shouldn't they be able to make a core set of features in hotsync (so maybe only the main apps like address book, datebook program...etc) are supported? Just wondering.
RE: Should have one desktop for all brands...
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/1/2002 3:36:01 PM #
PalmSource does create a basic version of the Desktop app then gives it to all the licencees. It isn't released to the public. Palm and Handspring models work fine with this, though they tweak it a bit. That's why Visor users can use the Palm version of the Desktop with no problem.

Sony decided they wanted to add a truck load of features to the desktop. They also did something ****ed up with USB, so they have to heavily modify what PalmSource gives them before it will work with their handhelds. So it isn't Palm's or PalmSource's fault, its Sony's.

PalmSource could force Sony to use a generic version of the desktop, but you'd lose a lot of features, like desktop mounting of the handheld as a removable drive.

RE: Should have one desktop for all brands...
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/1/2002 4:09:49 PM #
SyncML could allow this.
RE: Should have one desktop for all brands...
atrizzah @ 8/1/2002 4:29:41 PM #
Well if they're gonna let 3rd parties modify the desktop, they should at least make it so the versions aren't mutually exclusive. I own a Treo 90 and my brother ownes a m505, but we can't sync to the same computer because we have to choose whether to install the Handspring or Palm version of Palm Desktop

Peace Out

RE: Palm does it Again.. Sheesh!
jjsoh @ 8/1/2002 9:19:02 AM #
Nope. I've tested hotsync on XP Pro to verify your claims. And I've concluded that I could not. After 6 tries (1 laptop, 1 desktop; 3 tries each), it has only used 13% at it's peak WHILE hotsyncing. (avg. was around 7-9%.) Otherwise, while idle it uses 0-1%. Memory usage is 6MB.

RE: Palm does it Again.. Sheesh!
niolonra @ 8/28/2003 11:21:13 PM #
I have had a number of problems with this version of the desktop program. The hotsync doesn't seem to use up more processing power, but takes three to four times as long to hotsync. I don't sync the expense report or notepad or voicememo, and I set the backup bit to ignore a number of files I don't really need backed up each time and it improved slightly. I also had a problem that when I installed HandBase and Avantgo, the files it sends to the Palm to be hotsynced did not show up in the Quick Install program, but were actually installed.

Palm's answer to this, like everything, is to just delete and reinstall everything. Since I got my Tungsten from Franklin Covey, there is no Palm Install Disk to install the previous version, and I can't find a link to it on their website. The version for my M505 (what I had installed before) for some reason now does not seem compatible, I'm guessing because of the XP USB driver issue. Palms website is not particularly clear about how to fix this in my case. Any ideas?

RE: Palm does it Again.. Sheesh!
niolonra @ 8/30/2003 8:34:52 AM #
I'm answering my own question here:
1) I uninstalled the Palm desktop (after copying my files in another directory) and searched the registry for anything with Palm in it. After deleting probably 60 entries, I rebooted and did the same with HotSync
2) I searched the registry for Hotsync and did the same. Then I ran Norton Utilities and had it check for incorrect registry entries, stray dlls, that sort of thing.
3) Palm has a link buried to download the old desktop (4.0.1) at http://www.palmone.com/us/support/downloads/palmdt_4.html
4) Since reinstalling it, and a number of other programs, it's back to fast hotsyncs and no crashing at the end of the hotsync

Seems like my handera syncs faster with this version than with the previous. Has anyone else noticed this?

Function Keys Gone

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/1/2002 9:00:58 AM #
Well after having no problems with the install and syncing, I come to realize that the hot keys for switching between the embedded applications (calendar, datebook, etc.) No longer work. They used to be F2 and F3.

Any suggestions?

Go to Palm's website, browse to the readme file for the new desktop update and at the bottom select No for did this solve your problem and then submit feedback asking them to replace the hotkey feature.

If enough people do it they will correct the oversight.

Palm's MO as usual: too little, too late :-(

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/1/2002 10:18:06 AM #
Is this a joke? This would have been a great desktop for palm users if it had come out TWO YEARS AGO. I'll stick with Intellisync and Outlook.

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/1/2002 10:36:55 AM #
Well, it may be a joke but at least it works for MOST people properly. I've not had a chance to use it under XP yet to see how the CPU usage is.

Now, what IS a joke is the bungled 4.1 OS upgrade. You'd think Palm would concentrate its remaining energies to squash the bugs in the 4.1 upgrade before releasing another (potentially) buggy 4.1 release...at least Desktop 4.1 is easier to "fix" than OS update.

Sigh....

Ed, any news yet if there will be an XP-compatible OS updater?

Let me get this straight Palm desktop which is free is "a joke" compared to your $500 Outlook. Ummm....
Go freak'n figure.

Hotsync 4.0.1 ?

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/1/2002 11:02:02 AM #

Does the installation of Palm Desktop 4.1 upgrade the version of Hotsync to 4.1 as well?
RE: Hotsync 4.0.1 ?
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/1/2002 11:30:39 AM #
Yes. The HotSync version is 4.1.0 though I couldn't tell you if there are any benefits.

Plugins

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/1/2002 10:18:06 AM #
Does anyone know if any other plug-ins exist?

PDAConverter is freeware (for WinDOS), it will convert files and websites to Plucker formats. Available at http://home.arcor.de/derfetzer/palm/pdaconverter_e.html

love the duplicates remover!

it should have been there from the beginning...

Dem new icons and themes shure is purty

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/1/2002 12:54:59 PM #
It works fine on Windows XP Pro. Aside from the better looking icon and themes, I really don't see much of a difference.

Old Expense Report Users, Beware!

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/1/2002 4:35:25 PM #
If you are using the old Expense Report program to auto-populate your Excel expense report form, don't load Palm Desktop v4.1! It will delete the old Expense conduit, the EXPREPRT.EXE program, and all of the supporting Excel files in the Palm subdirectory. The new Expense program in Desktop v4.1 does not provide that functionality; it replaces it with a simple export to Excel capability.

A word to the wise...

Yes, I also found out the hard way. Would have been nice if they had warned us...

Install to Memory Card?

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/3/2002 1:07:50 PM #
You are supposed to be able to install to memory cards. Is that only with PDA's with built-in adaptors or does it support other adaptors, like the Memplug for Visor Deluxe?

That feature doesn't seem to work with my Prism and Matchbook Drive.

Palm Dexktop 4.01

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/5/2002 5:18:49 PM #
"!!!Fantastic!!!" say the more then 20 people that I have put this program on their PCs as a scheduler.
very helpful to those whom have sustained a Brain Injury resulting in partial or substantial memory loss.
It has convinced 5 to buy a Palm and several more to consider purchasing one.
Older versions are just not as useful, or as easy to use.
