Well lets hope PalmOne can put these onto PDAs in 2006

Frenchie @ 1/12/2005 3:15:28 PM # Q
Really cool stuff. 802.11g is what my school uses and having a PDA take advantage of that speed is awesome. Hopefully we will not have to wait very long.

The world will end in 2006. Just as it was predicted in the bible along with the release of Microsoft Longhorn.... :p

Palms don't even take advantage of full 802.11b speed yet. So I guess I don't really see the point.

By the time someone actually ships a product with one of these, Palm will JUST start handling full 11Mbit/s speeds... and the rest of the world will be on 802.11m or something.

And to think, I'm a Palm advocate. Wireless access w/ Palms just makes me cynical since the lack of WiFi (and a dozen other things) in the T5.

Ugh

P1 has already told you what you want and don't want in a PDA.

Isn't that good enough??

sign i guess you guys are right. I HATE PalmOne's communist look on things. Who is PalmOne interviewing and what type of drugs are they taking/smoking

Palm says 'no' because -

1. It doesn't fit in with "Zen".
2. It will raise device cost too much.
3. Battery life will suffer.
4. PDA weight/size/form factor will suffer.
5. Most users don't want/won't use it anyway.
6. Go buy a Palm SD WIFI Card if you want WIFI.

who is the jack *ss who came up with this "Zen of Palm"! You know what if you want to have a device for PIM get a tiny paper agenda book and write down your BS in there.

Sorry but if PalmOne went to this "Zen of Palm" they would be filing for chapter 11 in less then 4 months.

The Zen Of Palm isn't to do with the number of applications installed on the device. I've recently got a palm PDA and the Zen of Palm is more apparent to anyone else has migrated:- The Zen aspect is in the easy access of applications and the smooth running of the OS - this is why you never hear the phrase "The Zen of Windows Mobile for Pocket PC 2003."

As for WiFi, a combination Bluetooth/WiFi device would be nice but a WiFi device already exists - the Tungsten C. The only reason I didn't go for one of those is not to do with the processor, which is roughly the same speed as the T3, but because I wanted a large screen without a keyboard.

My guess is that Palm will bring out a BT/WiFi device this year but running OS Garnet rather than Cobalt. I'd rather have a relatively bugless OS (hence Zen Of Palm again) rather than something rushed together to keep a deadline. Who knows, Cobalt may even make an appearence towards the end of this year....

Don't give up hope!

sorry guys for the flam above but the TC is a really bad PDA. Card slot isn't SDIO enabled and the sound is only mono. Add these and you have gotten my buy. Hopefully the TC2 is better but i have serious doubts to that.

http://channelsource.palmone.com/regac/chsrc/News?item=11507&site=3&pageObj=AUTH_PROMOTIONS
(Thanks Brighthand forums for the link)

I've posted this earlier today in the PIC forums but the news item comments are more heavily traficked I figure so I'll repost it here. Ryan, perhaps this new mail-in CD thingie mentions a news quickie? Look at the expiration date for the T|C CD offer as well...hmmm...

So someone take a look at this surprise promo offer out of NOWHERE (and underpublicized) for a discontinued 2-year old model and please tell me why P1 has suddenly gotten serious again about a wi-fi enabled model! I'd wager that either a lightly updated (Athena connector, OS & ROM updates) T|C refresh is in the works as a stopgap OR there's going to be an entirely new 801.22G-enabled model still running Cobalt this spring alongside the T|E2 (thanks Mike Cane for the link below)

Also, the T|C's SD slot IS fully SDIO compatible.

I used a Veo Photo Traveler SDIO digicam (lame quality but it did work) on my T|C extensively for about a week last year before I came to my senses and began carrying a real digicam again.

well again i am wrong(sorry AGIAN for wrong info i thought it wasn't an sdio slot) anywau the mono audio is somewhat of a deal killer for me but in the end it is ok for what it was made for.

Wi-Fi; Shmi-Fi. If Wi-Fi is so vital, why are the sales of the TC so poor?

RE: Well lets hope PalmOne can put these onto PDAs in 2006
sremick @ 1/13/2005 10:21:23 AM # Q
1) I already have a WiFi card for my T3. It sucks battery like there is no tomorrow, but the T5 sucks in other ways more.

2) I don't want a Tungsten C. I don't want a thumboard. I want a larger screen. I want a graffiti area.

3) Maybe the sales for the T|C are so poor because it's aimed at Blackberry users, and not at those of us who feel like my 2nd point above? Maybe people WANT something that Palm has yet to produce, so that's why there are no sales to show it?

I'm expecting really high hopes

vesther @ 1/12/2005 6:53:43 PM # Q
I'm gonna be expecting a lot of high hopes for both palmOne and SyChip to cooperate with each other in order to create a reasonable 802.11g-certified PDA also with Bluetooth 1.2 compliance. palmOne needs a device with built-in 802.11g Certification and Bluetooth 1.2 compliance. The Palm OS Market is in dire need of enthusiast culture.

Also, I don't think SDIO Wi-Fi Cards are enough. I prefer 802.11g-Certification BUILT IN rather than having to use an 802.11g-Certified SDIO.

I still have a m505 and I am really to buy the Zodiac with a Sandisk Wifi card. Do you think TC2's spec will be better then Zodiac? If TC2 has build-in 11g + 320X480, then I guess I should wait...

Recently, palmOne probably only gonna stick with 2 Zires and 2 Tungstens because they are now laying their eggs in the Treo Basket IMO. I think the upcoming Tungsten T7 should have built-in 11g Certification and Bluetooth 1.2 Compliance. Furthermore, I WANT THE TUNGSTEN T7 TO BE ENVELOPED IN A SMOOTH, DURABLE METAL CASE!!!!!! No more plastic, I'm getting sick and tired of plastickey Tungstens. I hope palmOne will start listening to their Power User base.

Oh, I'm just curious what kind of metal palmOne should be using. My vote goes to Anodized Aluminum--smooth and comfortable to the hand.

Power utilization?

voice of chaos @ 1/12/2005 7:33:15 PM # Q
I wonder what the power draw is of this thing compared to the 802.11b chips that palmOne uses in the T|C and the SD card.

Looks cool - hope they use this (or something like it).
