Problems when signal is lost

justauser @ 2/11/2008 4:49:03 PM # Q
I am told by Palm that part of the power saving features of 2.12 is the radio signal will go into standby mode when signal is lost. I have found that the phone radio will shut down all together after losing the signal - massive problem if you're driving a distance only to find at the end of your trip your phone has switched off somewhere along the line. This patch also shows up on the Australian site so I assumed it was good here - Anyone else getting these problems?

Yep. Have exactly the same problem with the Ver 2.12 where the Treo680 phone totally loses it (ie: shuts down) in the Melbourne underground loop. I then have to re-key my SIM code to get it going again. Never happened with my old Treo600 (using the exact same SIM). Not good enough ....... time for yet another fix!!!

Problems when signal is lost

I contacted Palm tech support last week due to the fact that I could not answer calls on my unlocked Treo 680. They advised me to update to Treo680-2-12-ROW to solve the problem which I did yesterday 10 February.
Now I find that the Treo has shut down a few times today and unless I constantly check it, I am not sure if the phone is turned on or not! I have only travelled a radius of about 60 miles today but this has not happened before.
I am really trying to use my Treo but I am seriously considering getting rid of it and going back to the TX and a simple dumb cell phone.

I have a spot down the road from where I live where there is absolutely no signal available. If I take my newly patched Treo down to that spot the entire device will lock with the red LED indicator blinking erratically. I think Palm had better release a fix quick or it's going to get a flood of returned devices!

I got so fed up with the "update" that I rolled back to the original firmware. (Thank god for jamesgangut over at Treocentral!)

Problems I experienced:

*SMS message length was permanently locked at 160 characters and would not string together multiple messages like before.
*Softick Audio Gateway didn't work properly anymore, even with their new version.
*Odd, unexplained resets that happened for no apparent reason. Not particularly unusual for Palm OS, admittedly, but it was happening far more frequently than I was used to.

You can get the original 1.04 firmware via this thread:

Personally I used the "custom" version, which strips a lot of unnecessary junk out of the ROM. My 680 boots twice as fast as it used to now.

Thanks for the link Tim. Have searched for 1.04 ROW but obviously was looking in the wrong forums. Custom ROM sounds darn tempting - I'll try it later. Mind you, I don't think MyLocation will work on the old ROM... Pity, that was a great show-off app

^^ aha! you may have just solved why razix's My Location doesn't work for me. Wondered why it was working for everyone else. Didn't think about the firmware...

Not a definitive test but: before 'update', MyLocation glitched despite repeated attempts. After 'update' MyLocation worked perfectly.

Custom ROM very nice. Reset time much improved - thanks again for the tip Tim. And as a bonus MyLocation still works on my Treo680 even with 1.04. That blows my ROM update theory

TREO680-1.05-APR

zuhmir @ 2/12/2008 6:37:32 PM # Q
What about people who bought in hongkong?
my treo shows: TREO680-1.05-APR and the update fails... is there a way around it? i don't need Chinese anyway!

Never mind... I found a way around it. Turns out that if you choose the "SD card Install" then it just overwrites the old version without asking questions!!
so it's a good tip i guess... if you, like myself, bought the device in Hongkong or Singapore...
Also, a warning: If you do it you will lose Chinese language...

I also own a Hong Kong version with the APR.

Have you had any problems with this update?

Do you have access to all original programs (i.e. VersaMail, etc.)?

Is it worth upgrading?

if you have the APR version, you have a Chinese Treo 680, and you need to install the correct update for Chinese devices. this way, you wont lose the built-in Chinese software on the Treo. otherwise, if you install the ROW or ENA update, you'll lose teh Chinese OS.
