Upcoming Palm Device Code Names Revealed

An intrepid webOS hacker by the name of Destinal was rummaging around in the ROM of a SFR-sourced Pre 2 running WebOS 2.0 and dug up some interesting new Palm device code names which were posted to Webosinternals.org. Of course, these devices may or may not even see the light of day.

"RoadRunner" is widely known to be the current Pre 2, with "broadway" previously rumored to be a Pixi successor. The Pixi Plus, at least as far as Verizon Wireless is concerned, is slated to be EOL'd in March of 2011 so that would make sense. The other three code names have not been previously mentioned and are "windsor", "mantaray" and "stingray".

Just to speculate a bit, "windsor" could be the previously-discussed "Mansion" device which is supposedly a large-touchscreen, 800x480 candybar device with no physical keyboard. The two "ray" devices could quite possibly be WebOS tablets, perhaps bearing different screen sizes.

Thanks to BaalthazaaR for the tip.

Seeing that Palm has been making smart phones for several years, your point is moot.

So Palm is dead eh? Then long live HP!

This was on precentral.net the first of the week.

BTW, what are the codenames of the current products? I didn't see them mentioned.

How long a wait?

I almost feel like a voyeur on this site these days - watching out of curiosity but with no real intention of buying.

I've been waiting to see what Palm/HP would produce in the form of a tablet, and it seems its still some ways off - with no real proof that a Web OS tablet will happen.

I can understand why a company wouldn't want to give away its ideas before they reach market. But you can't let your competitors reach market first without giving your potential customers something to wait for.

The Archos 10.1 tablet is supposed to be on sale on the 18th. I'm enjoying Android. So why wait for a WebOS device that might not actually exist?

I can relate. I just picked up an iPad because there wasn't anything else out there that could compete with it. If there had been a WebOS tablet I would most likely have gone that route. With in the next month I will need to upgrade my phone. If the Pre 2 is out I may go with that but if it is not then I doubt I will ever be using a Palm device again.

I think I've heard these stories a time or two.

Palm should be studied in business schools everywhere as a case study in management horror. But, unfortunately like most the execs parachuted out long before the bottom and are sitting on boards directing other companies now, while probably teaching the next generation of leaders.

I have the Pre +, running at 1ghz, and mostly love it. I realize that feature wise it has fallen behind in some areas. But in others it is still amazing. I love the platform and fairly like the hardware. It will give me time to wait and see if HP puts mu$cle behind Palm vision or turns Palm into a corporate department ala iPaq.

Yup, I agree with all of the thoughts echoed above. In fact, I'm working on a PIC piece right now from someone very influential who is leaving WebOS simply because of a utter lack of new hardware awaiting him at the end of his contract. That was the exact same boat I was in this time last year when I made the Android plunge.

I'm far from an Apple fan, but If an iPad could be used independently of iTunes and supported drag & drop of media files, I'd probably have one of those already. Otherwise, I'll probably wait for a decent Android-based wi-fi tablet to appear within the next year.

Do I still own Palm products? Sure, but they range from a Pilot 1000 to a Pilot Pro to a Vx to two TXs. I have not bought a brand-spankin' new device from Palm in years. I even dumped both of my VZW Centros when I felt confident that Android was improving at a rapid enough rate to be a reliable primary telephone/PIM device (though still far from perfect).

It's quite obvious the Pre 2 was in the works (even finished?) long before the HP/Palm deal was finalized. Even if it had hit the market 6 months earlier than it is, it would in no way have been enough to save the company.

It's really tragic HP wasn't able to get their hands on WebOS earlier so that they could have had enough time to develop a really spectacular device for the holiday season. Apple is going to clean up with the iPad this holiday season and, for all intents and purposes, their "PDA" iPod Touch will take care of the smaller gift-giving needs. And by the end of CES 2011 we will have so many solid Android tablets heading to the market that are Tegra2-powered and running Android Gingerbread/2.3/3.0 that it will be nearly impossible for HP to make a dent in the market. Such a shame, as I've been saying since CES '09 that the WebOS UI and card metaphor & gestures are just BEGGING for a big high-res screen.

Palm. A step behind and not enough hardware showcase all their hard work. The more things change ...

HP may change that, but even if they are not to late it may not be for the better.

pretty much everyone has left Palm. so that leaves the people at HP. many of which have also left. so this is what you are pinning your hopes on?

a deserted row boat that's sitting on a listless broken rudderless battleship?

Just stopped by to see if this site is still alive. No surprise to read so many regulars bemoaning the end of Palm. Again. And again. I went the whole 9 yards with Apple: iPhone 4, iPad and Macbook Pro and have no regrets. Garnet did some things better but I have transitioned to Apple's way of doing things. I don't discount what HP can do with their deep pockets and their intent to sell unlocked hardware (like the old Palm) so they may still make HP webOS into a serious contender but I am gone.
