Palm VII Chat 2.0 in Beta

The Palm VII/Omnisky web clip "Chat" has been updated, and version 2.0 is available for wireless Palm users. A new PQA will be coming out soon, but for the time being, users can get to the new version through the current chat PQA, available on the Chat web page.

A Palm VII wireless unit or a Palm equipped with an Omnisky wireless modem is required. Palms using other connectivity options have not been tested, but any Palm that can run PQA's should be capable of using the Chat PQA.

A feature being integrated into the new app allows for the 'disabling' of users who use over-the-top profanity, etc. If a user is ignored by more than three users, that user will be disabled. The new version allows users to use one nickname, permanently associated with their device ID.

The old chat room was rife with profanities and other nonsense, the anonymous nature of the room seemed to provoke the worst in users.

This concept has provoked a bit of an e-mail flurry concerning censorship, and who has the right to limit free speech, etc. One camp says that anyone with a problem with the banning of users should write their own app. Other users believe the chat room should be wide open. Comments on this topic are welcomed -- as well as ideas for restraining the abusing language while maintaining a free forum for online discussion.
