Rumor: AvantGo or AvantNoGo

F---edCompany.com, the rumor site with the unprintable name on which users post tidbits about failing companies, has the following:

Rumor has it wireless web company AvantGo is asking people to "resign" rather than laying them off, in an attempt to keep the news from investors. Oops, sorry.

Just a few weeks ago, AvantGo reported record quarterly revenues and projected that the company would be profiable earlier than expected and without needing any additional funding. Revenues for the year were $16.3 million, a 465% increase from $2.9 million for the previous year. On the other hand, their loses were $10.6 million for the year.

No biggie

Ha! I'm not at all worried that AvantGo will go under. Someone would snatch them up first. Unfortunately that someone is likely to be....Microsoft!

Um..guys? So far, this is *rumour*! No need to go throwing dirt on a body that's still kicking.

AvantGo

I guess I should sell my measly-(sp?)50 shares huh?

but... but... but...

I just got AvantGo yesterday, and I like it quite a bit... I'd be sad to see it go... especially to Microsoft, who will probably kill PalmOS support (or bloat the viewer to 3MB >_<). Ironic, though, the list of positions available at AvantGo (accessible from the home screen) is probably taking close to 1K of space on my poor lil' IIIc...

Let's AvantGo to Coola

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/19/2001 11:25:39 PM #
Hey, at least there's still Coola around...

It's sad to see this great app join the others in Heaven, but then, the only constant in life is death...

AvantGone ?

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/20/2001 4:48:22 AM #
I hope not, this is a Palm killer app, perhaps if push comes to shove Palm will buy them.

Now, I like this idea. I would hate to see Microsoft buy AvantGo, but if they really are in trouble,
I'd like to see Palm pick them up. They just bought WeSync, and AvantGo fits very well with this
trend that Palm seems to be following: wireless access to useful, simple functions. Considering they
have been bundling AvantGo on their distribution CD's for a few years now, they're already
acknowledged that it fits well.

Browse-it is better anyway...

I.M. Anonymous @ 2/20/2001 8:25:56 AM #
I would suggest everyone check out Browse-it from Pumatech. You are not tied to the channels from AvantGo - you can view ANY webpage and save it for offline viewing.

You can check it out at http://www.intellisync.com

Uh, you can do this with AvantGo, too - click on "Create My Channel".

News of AG's demise....

Nate @ 2/21/2001 12:49:36 AM #
Pulled from PalmInfocenter's archives;

AvantGo Receives $31 Million in Venture Capital
Summary: AvantGo, Inc. has announced that it has secured $31 million in financing from strategic partners and private equity investors. Smaller.com is reporting that some of this money will be used create a wireless service in competition with OmniSky.

AvantGo Reports Record Revenue
Summary: AvantGo, Inc. reported financial results for its fourth quarter and revenues were $6.6 million, representing a 526% increase from the same quarter last year, and a 42% increase over the third quarter of 2000. Revenues for the year were $16.3 million, a 465% increase from $2.9 million for the previous year.
"Based upon the strong sales trends the Company experienced in the fourth quarter of 2000, we project that revenue will grow by over 100% in 2001," said David Cooper, AvantGo's chief financial officer. "We have revised our projections and anticipate reaching profitability two quarters earlier than previously planned, and without any additional funding.

Trimming the workforce is all part of the natural flux of a company, it goes up, it goes down. AG managed to create a spectacular offline browser service that has quickly become one of the most essential applications for handhelds. It's clear they have long term plans to integrate wirless features into their service, and I think they are on the right track. Let's not get carried away just because fuckedcompany.com reports that they are not filling vacancies, and maybe offering people an easier way out of the company. That doesn't make them a truly fucked company. :)

there are so many good services and ideas out there. but none of them is generating money. or does anyone of you pay for avantgo? add some nervous investors who want to see provits and it's no wonder, these companies fail. i'm really sorry 'bout that since avantgo's a great service.
Did you read the post by Nate right above yours?
@ 2/21/2001 12:44:45 PM #
Obviously they are making money, through ad revenue and through "enterprise" markets. 16 million in revenue and climbing. 31 million in VC funding just a couple of months ago. So your point about it not generating any money and nervous investors is completely off.
