Noah Pro 2.0 Supports Expansion Cards

ArsLexis has released  Noah Pro 2.0, an English dictionary with definitions of 122 thousand words. This version supports Palm m500/m505 SD memory expansion, the Sony CLIE Memory Stick, the MemPlug for Visor, HandEra 330 SD/CF memory expansion, and TRGPro CompactFlash. It costs $20. Noah Lite, the free version, has not been updated so doesn't have expansion card support.

Thanks to compression all 122 thousand words only take 4.7 MB of memory. It also has smaller databases that require less memory. The smallest is 1 MB. Users can also create their own dictionaries.

If a database is stored on an external memory card, Noah Pro requires 1 MB of internal memory and 5 MB of external memory.

About time apps like this come out. Now I can keep my gigantic noah dictionary on smartmedia, thank you jebus. Very nice to see developers starting to embrace the expansion slots.

OH my god...becky, look at her....Prism.

Oh yeah, why isn't there support for compactflash on a Visor?

Yes, it is neat that we can store Noah Pro on the MMC but one thing; it is super slow on start up and transfers 1 meg of some sort of cache in main memory. Once up and running, the speed is ok. The developer has indicated that they will try to speed up the start up. I hope so! BibleReader has support for the MMC cards too and their speed is very good!

Have a nice day, morningstar1844@hotmail.com

Maybe they are not 100% On Topic, but sometimes there is no where else to post it. And if we are talking about a new accesory - why do you delete if I ask about another?? It is somewhat related. Your arbitrary deletion of posts is very annoying. I can see if you need to delete obscenity, but if we are discussing accessory X and I ask about accesory Y (ie Backup Card) there is no need to delete it unless it gives you a good feeling of the small little power you have in your life. Thank you.

I'd like to test this before I buy but I don't see this option. I'm not talking about Noah Lite, I want to see Noah Pro 2.0 before I plop down $20. Did you find a demo or did you buy it?

RE: Noah Lite

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/5/2001 9:16:43 AM #
Naoh Lite's 2 meg medium dictionary file works great with MSMount, thank you very much. If you own a Clie MS or Palm SD unit, you should not be without MSMount (http://www.geocities.com/nagamatu/MSMount/) and PowerRun. I have some 30 megs of programs and databases accessible on my 64 meg memory stick. Both HIGHLY recommended AND free!

When you say MSMount and Powerrun, how do these two work together? I use MSMount, but I could not figure out Powerrun and all docs are in Japanese

RE: RE: Noah Lite
I.M. Anonymous @ 6/6/2001 3:38:09 PM #
MSMount and PowerRun work great together. PowerRun is really a more ambitious undertaking, since it copies all program and data files into main memory, runs them, then cleans up after itself. It is great for large programs, especially those used infrequently (there is, for obvious reasons, a small performance penalty at application startup and exit). MSMount is a better choice for programs that have a relatively small footprint but utilize huge data files (like Noah, BibleReader, etc.). I have experienced no conflict between the two AS LONG AS I choose which to employ for each program.

RE: An Alternative

Customer support is first class so far. I am a happy registered user of BDicty for more than a year. I did not recall anyone get excited when BDicty annouced its v4.6 can deal with SD/MMC/CF...etc. This was just a week ago.

As a matter of fact, BDicty appears to be a better alternative. Yes, you can add words (create custom dictionary - very useful for professionals and engineers), and then you can have smart layout of the screen display depending on the lenght of explanation of a word. What's more is that with BDicty you can have a couple of really useful lexicons - for free. I like the Thesarus most. For those who do not have the luxury of add-on memory, BDicty English English lexicon also comes with a lite version, at no extra cost.

Not to mention about other laugagues available, if one so wish ( especially users in Europe - German, Spanish, Russian and even Vietnamese).

Francis, basically BDicty didn't get any coverage because no one sent me anything on it, unlike Noah. As much as I try, I can't be everywhere. If you think something is news-worthy, please send it to me. I don't guarantee I'll run it but I can guarantee I won't if I don't hear about it.

p.s. Insulting someone who speaks another language for their weak grasp of English is pointless trollbait.

My apologies for those typo and grammatical mistakcs in my earlier post. Sorry. I was in a rush. I know working late past midnight (it is now past 1 a.m. in my time zone) is no excuse, but do hope to give some comfort to that person who may have wished to be harsh on my English.

Ed, thanks for your kindness.

Version 2.0 Crashes my TRGPro!!!!!

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/5/2001 10:08:08 AM #
Was using Noah Pro 1.1 for a long time now and found the only problem to be that keeping the dictionary db on the card in AutoCF required me to keep the same amount of RAM free. If I tried to keep a larger dictionary in size then the amount of free RAM, I would have crashes during a search.

Worked around this by keeping a medium size dictionary and an equal or greater amount of RAM free. I was fairly satisfied but was excited to see the 2.0 release supported my TRGPro CF directly.

Read the instructions, installed as per the referrence to keep the db in the root on the card. Fired it up with the largest dictionary and WHAMMO! Crashamundo!!!

Tried everything over again, same result. Tried with all Hacks disabled, same result. Tried with the db in AutoCF directory, same result. Tried with a smaller dictionary db and the program in RAM, same result.

I deleted version 2.0 and am using 1.1 again. I will wait for an incremental version change and try again. Sigh, and I was so excited to be able to have the large dictionary too.....

EDITOR....I was unable to login, the page kept erroring on me, so I posted this as anonymous. I am at work, so it could be a problem on this end.

I had to take our member database offline for about an hour to fix a nasty bug in the forums. It's back up now.

dictionary on a card

drw @ 6/5/2001 7:06:15 PM #
Cards are useful, but for something like a dictionary, that's not something I'd want to carry around. Since upgrading to a kyocera 6035, I can access www.dictionary.com for all the words I want.

Yeah, but there are online charges. The charges itself maybe small but connecting to WAP can be a headache (for GSM phone where you had to dial up the ISP first). Don't know about PQAs and CDMA, as only GSM is available in this side of the globe (Asia). PQAs maybe better (always On?) but higher charges, (unlimited access for a month cost more than 2 Noah Pros).

working great

jwouden @ 6/6/2001 2:28:08 AM #
Noah Pro 2.0 is working great for me off of my SD expansion card. I am very happy with it. Comprehensive, and much faster now that I am not forced to use MSMount with it.

Excellent

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/6/2001 9:11:00 AM #
After reading this story and comments, I checked the respective Noah Pro and Bdicty sites. After comparing the two, with some trepidation, I downloaded Noah (while I liked the German Gold edition of BDicty, for the same price I could also get Roget's from Noah, plus I wanted the big lexicon). I was somewhat nonplussed at the time it took to download the zip file-8+ mb!-but once loaded, it installed in my M505 SD Card with no trouble and runs beautifully. No problem with hanging up the device, and the speed is all I could wish. Did manage to find a couple of words it didn't know though. When will the handheld edition of the OED be available? 8})>

CF of TRGPro is unsupported.

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/6/2001 11:16:03 PM #
I've tried noah pro on my trg pro and it crashes as noah lite does. Do yourself a favor and get tomeraider and worlnet dictionary (memoware.com) it's much faster and stable than noah pro.

PalmPak Dict/Thes

Shaun Burnett @ 6/7/2001 9:00:44 PM #
I was looking at Noah, but did not want to use up the remaining free memory on my m505. Do not know how it compares, but for $40, I purchased the PalmPak Dictionary/Thesaurus Card. It is based on the Franklin Reader for Palm OS.
