Sony Releases N710C System Update

Sony has released a system update for the PEG-N710C. This will update the Jog Dial functionality and Audio Player software that shipped with the handheld.

The Audio Player is used to play Atrac3 and MP3 media from the Memory Stick. This update increases this app's compatibility with the MP3 format, as well as adds additional features. This update also adds several functions to the Jog Dial and Back Button options in the preferences menu.

It takes the form of a 233 KB Windows EXE file, which prevents Macintosh users from performing this update.

Mac Users Can Update

You can just use Stuffit Expander to extract the .prc from the .exe . works fine.

If you have problems doing this extraction, let me know here. I could post the actual Update Yo-2.1.PRC file for download.

Update

I guess this is a ray of light for those who wondered if Sony would continue to support the N710C after it was released.

How many companies do you know that stop supporting a product the week it is released to the market?

Change in compatibility

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/16/2001 11:58:37 AM #
Does anyone know the technical changes in the MP3 player? I was hoping for a wider range of encoding compatibility; not just 44.1k, 16bit, 32-128k.

Uh, didn't you notice that Sony ships no Desktop software for Mac, or that the Clie box states "requires Windows PC"? This is hardly the time to get upset that the latest update is distributed in a Windows-centric format (and it's actually a self-extracting .zip file -- most programs that can unpack .zip files should be able to deal with it).

Sorry, don't mean to be harsh, I like Macs (I'd love a new iBook with OSX), but I strongly suspect that Sony doesn't bother with Mac support because Sony doesn't sell Macs, while they do sell Wintel-based PCs and laptops. As well, Sony uses Memory Sticks rather than SD in part because practically every other Sony-produced device has a Memory Stick slot these days (though it must also be pointed out that they had MS-equipped Clie's available long before the SD/MMC-capable Palms appeared).

Mac Compatable?

MacMan @ 6/19/2001 1:04:51 AM #
What is all this talk about Macintosh? I was under the impression that the Clie N710C does not work with Macs. This is the only problem I see with mine at this time. Is it possible to use with a Mac? If so, how? Thanks

The application you are looking for has just had its name changed to The Missing Sync. You can find it here:
