What is "Palm Scripting"?

mikecane @ 8/7/2001 8:38:59 AM #
What does Palm scripting mean? Does it automate tasks on the Palm itself or only on the desktop end of things? I wasn't aware that Palm programs had hooks built into them (or could easily have hooks added to them by other programs/utilities) to allow scripting/automation.

As the article states, it reffers to mobile versions of programs like perl and php

If I knew what those were, do you think I would've asked the question to begin with?

Perl is an interpreted language. Instead of compiling the code into an executable, the code is interpreted at runtime. I would assume then, that the script would be interpreted on the palm itself.

But what does it DO on the Palm?!

You use these scripting languages to write small programs that run on the Palm. For instance, you could write a PLua script that automatically changes all expired ToDo items to Priority 1. Or you could write a program that presented the text equivalent of Cisco router error codes. Or, as I did, write a script that generates shareware registration codes based on an entered HotSync name, so I can assign registration codes to new users without having to be at my PC.

I'll tell you as soon as I get it, just bought it.

OH my god...becky, look at her....Prism.

Got MC++ trial version!

Got the trial version before they removed it :)
They have released a stable product with great features similar to Visual C++.

Personally, I feel that there are still certain features missing like autocomplete but if you want to use C++ framework, sad to say MobileStudio is the only tool available.

Meanwhile, I have taken up their special offer already and started bugging them with my requests ;p

is there ANY overhead to using this vs. codewarrior or the PRC-Tools stuff. I know there is no run time, but are the PRC's larger in any way. This is critical for the stuff that i'm doing right now.

Thanks.

mobileStudio's C++ framework has a low overhead of about 7kb. As PRC-Tools is the core compiler, C++ results in about 17kb for a basic application.

Thus final size of a basic application is about 24kb. Subsequent size increase are relatively low.

You can download the samples from www.mobilesoft-labs.com Developer's Online to have a feel of the prc sizes.
