SplashData Announces SplashID

SplashData, Inc. has announced SplashID, which securely stores all kinds of personal identification information including user names, passwords, credit cards, calling cards, bank accounts, PINs, medical insurance information, and more. Information is stored in a secure, encrypted format and is accessible from either the handheld or Windows or Macintosh computer. For a short time, it costs $10.

It makes use of 256-bit encryption and offers a customizable list view that supports color and icons. Information can be put in an almost unlimited number of customizable categories.

“We envision a future when handhelds will replace conventional wallets for conducting transactions, maintaining personal ID information and even holding wallet-sized photos of friends and family,” said John Chaffee, President of SplashData. “The release of SplashID brings us one step closer to realizing that vision.”

SplashID supports all handhelds running Palm OS 3.0. SplashID Desktop, the desktop software that synchronizes with the handheld, is available now for Windows 95, 98, NT4, 2000 and ME. A Mac version will ship in late August that supports Mac OS 8.6, OS 9 and OS X.

A free 30-day trial version is available.

Fatal Exception under Palm OS v3.3
I.M. Anonymous @ 8/10/2001 11:44:11 AM #
What version of the Palm OS are you using? I tried to run it on a Palm V running 3.3 and the app causes a fatal exception.

It seems to work fine on my m505, though. That is running 4.0, of course.

anyone else tried it?

I always look forward so see new apps for SlapshData. Their software is superb. TSplashID is the best Wallet type mamnager on the market in my opinion. I can just imagine what future versions of the software will have incorporatedn into it.

Anyone want to review/compare it to eWallet?

Hey All,
I've been using eWallet for a while now and really like it. How does this compare?

I tried EWallet and deleted it. This is much better. Its roughly half the size of EWallet and is customizable (Unlike EWallet).

I have Secret and eWallet installed on my Palm and evaluating them.

Right now eWallet has some advantages, and Secret has some advantages.

However, neither of them are very full features and I don't think having an icon named "eWallet" is very discreet for your confidential data. Secret allows you to use a generic icon and name the application anything you want. Splash ID is rather bland and won't attract too much attention.

Anyway, from the looks of their website only, SpashID has better features overall then eWallet.

Driver's License App for PALM?

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/10/2001 7:21:59 PM #
I can't wait for the day that I can use my Palm as my Driver's License and I can take my own picture and dowload and pay for my renewal registration right from the DMV right into my Palm. Then, if I get pulled over by the cops, I can just beam them my license.........Are you tehcno-geeks salivating yet???????? Maybe I can beam them payment for the speeding ticket too??? Maybe a Springboard Breathalizer Module???????????????

Splash ID and printing

I.M. Anonymous @ 8/11/2001 3:36:38 AM #
SplashData forgot one major thing: the ability to print out a hardcopy just in case your pc dies and your palm drains (battery) energy.
I've been using TopSecret from clicklite.com for over 2 years and it does the job (128 bit encryption) and prints all records in one go if needed. It has a desktop interface (win) too. What more do you need?

Cheers

SplashDatas vs. eWallets' customer service

Eyeguy007 @ 8/11/2001 2:10:08 PM #
I just downloaded SplashID for one reason.
If you have any of SplashData's programs and you have a problem or question and either email or call customer service or tech support you get....wait for it....HELP. It's amazing, I know, but its true!

After I'd been running Splashmoney for a few weeks, I knew that I liked it and worked every well but I had one problem with it. I do most of my bill paying online and use a checkcard exclusively for purchases. I hardly EVER write a paper check and wanted to know if there was a way of changing the transaction "types" and adding EFT or ATM or something similar. When I called tech support and asked they said Sorry "No, there isn't a way to do that...BUT-- We have been thinking about integrating that functionality. Please tell us what transaction types you would like to see and anything else that would make Splashmoney easier for you to use". I was slightly impressed (Heck, at least they were polite and pretended to be interested) Then 7 days later I get an email announcing an update to Splash Money that included EFT and ATM transaction types!! I was amazed.

Conversely I have used eWallet for 5 weeks now and two days before my 30 day evaluation period was up the program stopped synching with my desktop version. It kept giving me a "zero file length error" and "synch failed" message. I called tech support for eWallet and was told ...this is EXACTLY what she said "Hmm, yes that's not good. I don't know of a way to fix that. Have you tried attempting the synch again?" I said "yes, and to no avail" I then told her I had even gone through every record stored in eWallet looking for an empty one or something out of the ordinary and found nothing. She said once again "I have no idea what could cause that, you might want to give it some more time and see if it fixes itself"??!!
At least she was nice enough to give me a temporary 30 day extension on my trial period to "give it more time to fix itself" I guess.

Now, which program is better? I'll let you know when I've used SplashID for a few weeks. But if the question was "Which company would you trust with your hard earned money" that answer is clear to me already.

P.S. Shaddap, I don't work for Splashdata...LOL

I don't work for them either and I agree. I purchased it and had two problems. 1 with syncing and the other if I exit and am still in ID when I turn the palm on again i have to do a soft reset. Anyway, I emailed them for support late yesterday afternoon. When I checked my email this morning I had a response and some helpful suggestions that solved the first problem. The freezing dosen't worry me unduly I just make sure I exit the program before powering off. Imagine support promptly and on a weekend!. I love it. I recently switched from all money to splash money and like it a lot better also.

Did you ever get a solution to that "zero record length" problem with eWallet? I am having that same issue.
