iambic Releases Bump Attack Pinball

iambic, Inc. has released Bump Attack Pinball, which features a play area that is larger than the handheld's screen. The game scrolls as the ball moves into the upper or lower regions of the tables. Play goes on in front of two different full-color backdrops. It is available until January 1 for $15, after which it will sell for $20.

Bump Attack Pinball offers players two tables. The first, Deep Sea, features an aquatic setting with a raised loop, multiple bumpers, and hidden treasure. The second table, Mars, offers two raised loops, and a gun which captures the ball and allows the player to shoot it in any direction they choose. Both of these tables offer a total of 17 missions that players try to complete in order to obtain the highest score.

iambic has set up an on-line score board for Bump Attack so that players from around the world can compete against each other.

"Bump Attack Pinball represents another leap forward in Palm OS gaming," said Vidal Graupera, President and founder of iambic. "Its realistic ball and flipper movement, as well as the incredible graphics make Bump Attack Pinball unlike anything ever seen before in this genre for the Palm OS platform."

''game scrolls as the ball moves''

I would have to play it first but this sounds like it would make me sea sick.

Epic Pinball's playing field scrolled with the ball too and that seemed perfectly fine. Devil's Crush did too, although in a more limited fashion.

Or the most-scrolling game I can think of is Sonic's Spinball for Sega Genesis, which had HUGE levels.

And ARCHITUMP's Alchemic Pinball from Japan works the same way (though it's black and white, not color). It's a pretty good solution to fitting a rectangular game onto a square PDA screen.

Vibration support?

GregGaub @ 12/21/2001 8:12:58 PM #
I'm no pinballer, but I bet if they added/included support for the various vibrating palm things (Clie T's, Palm m50x's, Handspring's with vibrating springboards, etc.) it would be an even cooler gaming experience. :)

Support for BeatPlus...

If there was support for the BeatPlus SB module, it would be an added bonus... It's too bad the module never got much support.

Vibration support is cool - on a PDA even.
Here is an example: You have a Palm i705 with always on email - and you are in a movie or something, and you get an important emal - your Palm vibrates to let you know it has arrived!

So, anyone who wants to have their PDA remind them of something must disrupt a meeting or movie with beeping, while cell phone users can hit the switch to make it vibrate instead of ring? Your comment implies that you do not use your PDA to remind you of anything.

i dont think that many peeps use the Beat SB for the Visors, so they left it out...

Vibtating joysticks and controllers are annoying enough. Why would you want a vibrating handheld?

Lame

jeremyf @ 12/22/2001 9:34:47 AM #
That game is kinda lame. I like Pinball a lot but the demo was incredibly short (which I guess they're supposed to be in order to make money -- that's about the only reason I seem to register anything), too. The physics were pretty bad. The graphics were pretty nice but the levels didn't look too exciting.

JEREMYF'S RATING: TWO OUT OF FOUR STARS!!

Just in case you're wondering how many stars I'd give it..

I agree. The game looks gorgeous but the gameplay is really whacked out. The ball moves way way too fast and the scrolling thing is indeed pretty nauseating (esp. since it moves so fast).

$20 is too much for this, given current gameplay value. Keep up the great work on the graphics, iambic, but please compare the physics of your game to some of the other pinball games....

I also give it 2 out of 4.

As they point out, you need to RTFM, and you'd see that in-game you can press the 'up' key and from
the pop up menu slow the game down.

I agree the physics are not as good as Austin Powers pinball or architump/alchemic but it is a very fun game.

I registered it am an not unhappy about it.

Two things that really bother me right now are the disappearing flippers and the fact that tilt does nothing to the ball.

I think this is a case of the game being released before xmas before it was really ready.

price point.

I.M. Anonymous @ 12/22/2001 11:22:09 AM #
they need to keep the price point at $15... that actually is way too much for the game, but $20-$30 is ridiculous..

Keep palm prices low. We are in a resscession.

RE: price point.
Altema @ 12/22/2001 12:29:54 PM #
I went to register, but they have the price discount backwards. From the PalmGear website it says

"Regular price: $14.95 PGHQ Special Price! $19.95"

I thought it was just a typo, but the checkout page had the higher price which is way too high for a game. I also agree that the demo does not give you a chance to get to like the game. One ball? Even while your are playing the one ball on the one table, it has "TRIAL MODE" scrolling down the screen.

One thing I liked about AbaBall was that you could at least become familiar with it to make an informed decision, and the introductory price of $9.95 only encouraged the purchase.

I just want to add my agreement, WAY TOO SHORT of a demo period, and since you only get 1 ball I think that "Trial Version" text scrolling down the screen just helps to end that one ball you get quicker!!. I can't get a good feel for the game, so there is no way I would pay money for it.

Palm

I.M. Anonymous @ 12/23/2001 1:11:52 AM #
Palm & stylus just do not work out well for games. You really need more real solid buttons. Still, if you got a Palm it's the best you can do.

Now if you want to port Starcraft to the Palm you might be onto soemthing, but RTS games are beyod the scope of it's hardware.
