Quickies: Palm Hint, eVest 2.0, Atlanta, Linux DA

As part of its campaign to create "buzz" about its forthcoming handheld, Palm Inc. has a page on its site that, until recently, mentioned that the new handheld would be wireless. The page has been edited and the word "wireless" no longer appears. -Anon

The Scott eVest 2.0 will be available March 1. It has 15 pockets, the ability to connect electronic devices between different pockets, and removable sleeves. It will sell for $160 but there is a $40 discount for pre-orders. -Ed

The Atlanta PalmOS Developer's Group's first meeting of the year will be tonight at 7:00 pm. Chris Scullion will be giving presentations on 802.11b programming for PalmOS and the success and failures of using AppForge to develop a program for both the PalmOS and the PocketPC. -Jon Zaring

Empower Technologies has released the PowerPlay V, which is similar to the Palm Vx but runs the Linux DA O/S. It sells for $150. The company also sells a version of their OS that can be loaded onto a Palm IIIx, IIIxe, or Vx. -Rob

Although I haven't verified it myself through other sources, there is another palm coming out 2nd calendar quarter of this year (between 2nd half of march, and first half of june). Details of which palm this is, it's current name, or its features/price are not yet available to me. I have also found out that Palm plans to cut the price of all its handhelds, except the i705, by $20 to $50. This is most likely to drop the m100 handheld, move the m105 to the m100 position, and the m125 to the m105 position. The m500 palm will eventually be phased out, replaced by the m505 and the new palm should pick up the slack, and tighten it even more, for the dropped palms.

Palm will be releasing at least 1, sometimes 2 major "stories" every calendar quarter of this year.

I also heard of an M-127-a color version of the less expensive Palm line.

Does that "new units" include StrongARM-powered Palms? Or am I expecting too much?

Dark, you are expecting too much...

Don't look for ARM units until 3rd quarter at the earliest. The new OS isn't soup yet.

If Palm really wants to be compettive, they should put the m505 screen in an m100 series body and charge and charge a m100 series price for it. Then sell the improved m515 for $400.

The m505's screen costs more than the $99 the m100 sells for now.

OK, at first I felt geecky for even looking at the web site. But, I could almost hear my friends saying, "Of course YOU checked it out. How many did you end up buying?" ...
The PAN was the feature I liked best. It's a conduit for your cell phone's ear bud that keeps the wire 'hidden'. So, to answer my friends; just one. A black one. ...It'll go cool with my Docker's Mobile Pants.

But are Vests even in style anymore?

RE: SCOTT eVEST
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/22/2002 10:54:19 AM #
It's a jacket- with removable sleeves. Version 1.0 was a vest only.

RE: SCOTT eVEST
MobileMitch @ 1/22/2002 10:57:05 AM #
I was the first person to acutaly order the vest. (Dubious claim to fame I know) I love it. I am probably going to order the new version as well.

If the e-vest has a fault its that it lets you carry too much stuff as I tended to put too many things in it and it started to get really heavy.

If you get one you won't be dissapointed as the conduits and loops for headphones are very very nice.

Also, it does not look like anything different, just like a regular vest. (I am sure the jacket will be the same.)

You all should try one out, you won't be dissapointed.

It's gotta be the i705...

I.M. Anonymous @ 1/22/2002 10:42:54 AM #
The i705's in Office Depot's system; in fact the local crossdock center has 350 of them in stock, with plans to ship them out to stores on the 25th.

This is new info.
I wish I had gotten it earlier.
(So now the trolls and gossip-mongers can finally take a nap-they've been working hard!)
The screen is NOT color but it DOES have always-on email and an SD slot.
Not as good as we'd hoped but better than the worst-case-scenarios we have seen.

If this information on the i705 is new to you, you've missed a lot. Please read this article from last week with all this and much more on the i705:

how does the i705 dimensions listed above match up? Is that a Palm III-type size?

RE: It's gotta be the i705...
Ed @ 1/22/2002 3:32:20 PM #
The i705 is slightly taller and a touch thicker than an m505.

The leaked size of the i705:
4.7 by 3.1 by 0.6 inches

The m505:
4.5 by 3.1 by 0.5 inches

That height includes the antenna.

According to Palm's web site, the m125 dimensions are:
4.82" x 3.1" x 0.87"
5.31 oz

Not sure how I missed talking about this in the last news item.

As such, the i705 compares quite favorably in terms of size and weight. This is especially impressive given the fact that it has always-on wireless. A bit disappointing about the lack of removable faceplates. Too bad they couldn't have taken advantage of the same form factor as the m10x series, though the protruding antenna and movement of the SD slot probably prevented that.

If it truely has the MS Exchange end-to-end connection. I'm buying one. I don't care if it's not color. I was originally going to buy the m505 with and then connect through my cell phone, but I wanted to see what the i705 would really do when it came out. If it doesn't have

As for exchange mailbox connection... Palm didn't buy a little new york software company for their location and fashion sense.

Maybe it's the m130

Maybe it's the m130 (m125 with color screen)..!

Future Palm models: are people just making these up?

I.M. Anonymous @ 1/22/2002 12:23:33 PM #
m115, m515, m525, m130... are people just adding 10 and making these 'future' models up? Or did I miss a rumor memo? I'm pretty sure there will be a i705, but as for the others...

Let me try: the first bluetooth palm will be the b600 and b605 (monochrome and color)! The dual wireless version will be the bi600 and bi605. And the super secret sleak metal shell one will be the mib600 and mib605!

RE: Future Palm models: are people just making these up?
I.M. Anonymous @ 1/22/2002 12:41:32 PM #
You go that right!

But then again, what kind of name is "i705"? If it's black and white shouldn't it be the "i700"? Maybe the pictures and info has been disinformation and the real i705 IS color!

Bottom line, if there's nothing from them by mid-March, I'm going Sony.

I705

I.M. Anonymous @ 1/22/2002 7:15:29 PM #
Instead of an I705 I want one of those palms from Handmedia... From what i've heard they are way better...

I'm still ordering one for each room of my house. Maybe one for the shed also.
