What about the rest of the universe?

Will Palm put these short stories on their Peanut Press site for the rest of the people, outside Manhattan (believe it or not, there are other people in the universe).

It's not the entire book that is available for free, just one excerpt from it.

There is an excerpt from Everything's Eventual on the Peanut Press website. I don't know if it is the same excerpt that is available to the Manhattanites. It is not in doc format but you could probably copy and convert it.

...actually, it is a free excerpt from a collection of short stories.

Okay, the idea of it is cool though. Sure, it's a King Novel, and little e-excerpts have never been great (Remember "the Plant"?) but, they could use this in a cooler way. I saw a thing somewhere in NY that was a taxi cab thing where you could beam your location and destination, it'd give you the rate, and send a cab really fast. Seemed cool.

Just to let you know this is not something that Palm or Palm Digital Media is doing. This is an advertising campaign by Simon & Schuster. They made the decision as to how large the excerpt should be. They wanted to keep the transfer time to a minimum as people walk very fast in NY. I know because not only was I there when they made the decision, but I wrote the app (I work for Streetbeam, the company that has developed and deployed the technology used). Simon & Schuster is working with Palm Digital Media only as an outlet to sell the eBook version.

Just wanted to share my insight.

If anyone has any questions or comments please post and I will reply. (I am an avid reader of Palminfocenter)

"They wanted to keep the transfer time to a minimum as people walk very fast in NY."

That's funny. Now I have this picture in my head of people in NY walking fast, PDAs in hand, and pointing them at these kiosks as they pass it by, not slowing down or stopping, trying to get the ebook beamed to them. "Darn... it didn't complete the download. Maybe at the next one." Encountering the next kiosk, PDA still pointed, not losing pace, "Darn! I still didn't get it! I really want that ebook!" Still walking fast to the next kiosk...

People of NY... slow down! Take time to smell the roses (and download that ebook)... otherwise "Fuhgedaboudit!" :)

Off Topic, Launcher X

Dear Ed:

What happened to Launcher X, the replacement for Launcher III?

RE: Off Topic, Launcher X
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/21/2002 8:15:26 PM #
Have *any* dates been announced for Launcher X? Everything I've seen has said "coming soon"--no dates specified.

If you are not going to provide useful information, don't post, and anyway I asked Ed not you. And please grow up and stop flamming.

I know there are no set dates, I just asked Ed because there has been a long time without news about the program, also I have not received mail throught LauncherX mailing list.

Your too funny... that wasn't a flame. The person was asking if you had seen any actual dates. Just like all of us are wondering, are they missing a deadline they had promised or are they still on target as they never made a claim to a release date. Take it easy there... we are all friends here.

Dude calm down!!! You were asking what happen to it and the other guy was asking about a date. Twp different questions. If you can not take someone replying or adding to your post then don't post as all.
