Interesting Info on the Treo

kilo94 @ 3/27/2002 7:48:15 AM #
Believe that's the first time I've ever seen a handheld unit INCREASE after hitting the market. Wonder what that means--good sales or lower profit margins?

Most likely, it is due to an increase in the cost of some of the components required for manufacturing the Treo.

Maybe they are just trying to encourage peolpe to buy it WITH the service plan.

Spend $600 bucks for a mono handheld without expansion + a cell phone + poor battery life ? I can get a PDA + cell phone within the $400 range..

From CNET:
As for why the company increased the price of the phones that aren't sold with a new service contract, Jaquet said it was a move for Handspring's partners.

"As we move into more retail channels, the price increase gives our retail and carrier partners more flexibility to garner the kinds of margins they need to be competitive in this market."

What they are doing is increasing the retail price so that they aren't in so much direct competition with their brick and mortar retailers. I'm sure their margins are the same. It's just that retailers who have to sell these things don't want people to say "Hey, I can get this on the Hanspring website for xxx"

Expensive

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/27/2002 8:04:27 AM #
These new sony units are just too expensive. I understand that in the V unit ther is a camera and that they both have built in mp3 players, but once I get one of these (I actually won't order one now that I have seen the price, unless ecost as them cheaper) to Canada it will be $1200 - I doubt it.

These really are a niche product for guys/gals with cash to blow on the latest gadgets who dont have to worry about price. If the were even $450 and $550 or somehting close to that I might go this way just for fun.

Ed is there any listings for the bluetooth stick showing up anywhere?

RE: Expensive
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/27/2002 8:11:10 AM #
Don't criticize because you can't afford it. It's not for you. Stick with the $99 Palms.

As for me, I'm going to place an order. I can afford it and I want one.

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/27/2002 8:11:46 AM #
So, the guy who whines about price on top of the line handheld wants a rather expensive (and mostly useless at the moment) bluetooth memory stick???

RE: Expensive
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/27/2002 8:14:51 AM #
Once again I see that the two replies to my original post are not reflective of most of the readers of PIC.

I certainly can afford the units, but are they really worth it to me? No not at all.

I certainly can afford a BT MS, but is it really worth it to me? Of cours, because it serves my needs.

The new NRs would serve what I would like to have, unfortunatley at a price point that I am not prepared to move to for that particular product.

Its unfortunate that people like you are allowed to own computers and speak there minds.

Well, another petty tyrant proposing to muzzle free speech. If you don't like free speech, then don't post on this board.

If you're thin skinned like you are, then don't post. If you find people disagreeing with you, then don't post.

You'll live a lot longer if you don't get so heated up. Remember: people are entitled to their opinions yet the first thing in your little mind is muzzling people. You would make a great politician.

This is very typical of the posters here at this site. People can't discuss the issues/products without attacking an idividual and his/her comments regarding the price/benefit of this product.

Shame on you.

Why do people think this is expensive?!?!?!

Wasn't the n760c priced at $499 when it first came out?

I'm going by Canadian prices, and from what I remember, the n760c was $749CDN when I first saw it.

With the NR70 being priced at $500, it seems that it's the same price the n760c premiered at.

WIth the NR70V (is that right?) being priced at $600, seems like a nice price for the built-in camera option.

For the person that said the Canadian price would be $1200, what kind of crack are you on?

600 x 1.6250 (exchange approx) = 975.00 x 1.15 (ontario taxes) = $1121.25

your on crack.

RE: Expensive
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/27/2002 10:45:04 AM #
BTW, does somebody know how long does the battery last?
I've not seen any figures about it?

it's expensive for me too.

it also kicks ass for a palmos pda.

can't we get along? :)

Ok. I really hate arguing with Anonymous guys, but oh well.

You're throwing out some nice numbers, but here's how the numbers really work:

Price of n760c at release (From Memory):

US $499, CDN $799

Price of NR70 (Estimated):

NR70 US$499, CDN $799
NR70v US$599, CDN $950

Why would you be an idiot and start introducing taxes into the cost? Everyone pays taxes. Are you special somehow?

The fact is, the nr70 is no more expensive than the n760c was at release. The nr70v is more expensive because of the camera. I'm sure the MS Camera is more than $100 separately...

If you're gonna start spouting off numbers with taxes to support your initial crack-induced claim, you might as well start spouting off shipping charges, duties, interest charges on your credit card, tip to the delivery guy, etc.

Wow, now it costs $1500 CDN for an NR70. Golly gee, that's real expensive.

It's expensive for me, too...

$600 for Palm handheld... I'd rather buy a PPC instead.

No ''Functional Transparency''

sandbuck @ 3/27/2002 8:29:22 AM #
This device is Mac Daddy cool to be sure, but I predict that those who buy it won't carry it around all the time, the way conventional Palms are. Why? 1) the size (length) crosses juuust over into the awkward category, such that it may not "dissapear" in your pocket 2) It will take a liiittle bit longer whip it out, do your stuff and quickly tuck it away. These are two of the qualities that make a palm PDA omnipresent in most user's day to day lives.

That won't bother super-niche users. It will eventually frustrate conventional users who venture out and buy an NR, maybe to the point of "trading down" to a T-series.

When the NR's superior screen quality gets into a T-series body with an ARM processor, I'm biting.

RE: No
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/27/2002 9:39:05 AM #
But of course, the Sony apologists among us will disagree, claiming "it's just fine." Just like the Palm apologists among us claimed the m505 screen was "just fine." People will react personally to your claim that the NR series is not perfect. They'll flame you, despite the rationality of your comments.

That's because people, in general, are shallow, insolent, self-centered, and irrational. For further evidence, check out ANY thread here on PIC.

RE: No
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/27/2002 9:53:15 AM #
I couldn't agree with you more.

RE: No ''Functional Transparency''
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/27/2002 10:00:22 AM #
I've never associated a Palm device with the phrase "whip it out, do your stuff and quickly tuck it away".

The width and depth of the Sony look good, but I agree on the length - it's too long. (there it is again)

RE: No ''Functional Transparency''
LC @ 3/27/2002 10:40:22 AM #
I agree, the length seems to go overboard abit. That, coupled with a bit to high price (IMHO) and the possibility that there is an os5 version months away makes me think before purchasing this one.... I can afford it, but it is a luxury, I can't buy EVERY new pda that comes out (my wife makes sure of that!) and maybe this one, as cool as it is, is only an intermediate step for sony, then again they are SOOOOO cool!
Hmph.. Such problems we have!

Frighteningly perceptive.

Yep. I'll wait to update my obelesence until the ARMs comes out.

Handspring is playing with fire........

I.M. Anonymous @ 3/27/2002 10:06:33 AM #
and I am sure they will regret it soon enough, just like they regret that they didn't introduce color screens.

After all, they are techkies....maybe they should go back to b-school....

RE: Handspring is playing with fire........
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/27/2002 10:50:52 AM #
My understanding is that the Treo is selling very well (much to my surprise). I doubt Handspring is regretting anything at this point.

RE: Handspring is playing with fire........
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/27/2002 11:58:09 AM #
everyone will know the figures later, as far as I know it's not selling as good a i705, coz palm sold so well that they need to tell the Press about it :P

RE: Handspring is playing with fire........
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/27/2002 1:22:41 PM #
If they weren't sellign well prices would go down not up. The Treos are selling like hotcakes. No one is buying the Palm I705 anymore. See Palm's profit news release from alst week about the I705 having disappointing sales after a robust first start.

Real market data avaliable at amazon. Treo is one of the topsellers in phones so far.

Tapliner

Scott @ 3/27/2002 11:07:12 AM #
Tried out Tapliner 1.2 on my Samsung i300. It didn't seem to work. It dialed in and connected but I couldn't get the screen which lets me type in a URL. So, then I tried downloading version 1.1. The first page I tried came back with an error. Then, I tried another page (CNET's news.com). It told me that page had frames (which I doubt) and wanted me to click on another frame link. So, I did that and waited and waited. It seemed to be lost. I was beginning to think this thing was a cruel joke. But I tried one more URL and, what do you know, it worked. I kinda like their idea. Through zooming in and out, you can view a page pretty much exactly as it looks in real life. I almost wonder if their proxy server might be taking an image capture of a web page, then sending down that full sized image. As you might imagine, speed is atrocious. It simply isn't useful at the speed at which my i300 connects. Maybe if you have a high speed GPRS or wireless network. I noticed there's a version for the PPC, so maybe I'll try it on my iPaq later.

RE: Tapliner
I.M. Anonymous @ 3/27/2002 7:13:52 PM #
I found Tapliner pretty dismal as well. Even though I installed the "HandEra" version, it didn't make use of the full screen, and it appeared more scale-to-fit. Taps onscreen had to be skewed to an upper-left 160x160. It was DOG slow (both in initial launching, and page fetching), even in "High Speed" mode over 802.11b. It fatal exceptioned at one point after I aborted a page download, and it didn't seem to display all the ALT tags of graphical hyperlinks on web pages I visited in "high speed" mode (no graphics), so you couldn't use the navigation tools.

Eudora Web renders those pages fine, and truly instantaneously.
