Rumor: Sony to Announce PEG-T655C on June 25

According to an anonymous source, Sony is going to announce a U.S. version of the T650C on June 25. It probably isn't a coincidence that this is the first day of TECHXNY/PC EXPO, a very large tradeshow. If Sony follows its regular pattern, the new model will be announced but not available until a few weeks later.

Last year, the T600C was introduced in Japan at 40,000 Yen, the same price the T650C is coming out at. This might be an indication that the U.S. version of the T650C will be introduced at the same price the T615C was: $400.

Also according to this source, it will be named the PEG-T655C. If this is correct, it will be a slight change in the way Sony names its models, though the company recently has ignored its own rules when naming other models.

In the past, Sony has changed their product numbers depending on what country the handheld is released in, like the T600C in Japan is basically the same as the T615C in the U.S. and the T625C in Europe. This change has involved adding 10 to the product number. Clearly this isn't the case with this model if the U.S. version of the T650C is to be called the T655C.

To complicate this, Sony didn't didn't change the product names at all for its most recent models, the NR series. It is the NR70 and NR70V no matter where it is sold.

About the T650C
Sony announced the T650C in Japan late last month. It is an updated version of the T600C series, including an improved color screen and a 66 MHz processor. It also has an MP3/ATRAC3 player. It will be available in Japan tomorrow.

The T650C is quite similar to the T600C/T615C/T625C. Its casing is the same size, it uses the same buttons, has the same HotSync connector, etc.

It comes with a pair of earbud headphones but not the control wand that came with previous Sony handhelds with built-in audio players. Instead, the headphones have just a volume control.

Let me preface this by saying it is complete speculation. I do not know. I have no way of knowing. However, due to the spectacular price-cut on the T615 and the nature of the model number and past experience with the S3xx series, I would guess this will enter at exactly the same 400 dollar price point. Any higher and it just won't sell next to the NR70. It certainly won't be lower (if it is, I'll eat my hat AND then go out and buy one).

"This might be an indication that the U.S. version of the T650C will be introduced at the same price the T615C was: $400."

I believe the operative words are "might" and "indication".

Well, unless you have a better educated guess, $399 seems to be it. Idiot.

will sony keep the T615 after the T655 is released?

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/7/2002 1:53:16 PM #
i am thinking sony will not discontinue the T615 in the US, and just keep it along side the T655 for a few reasons. the most important is they need a below $300 pda to compete with the m130 and treo 90.

I personally think you are wrong, but we will see. I only say this because I keep seeing Ubid sell t615s by the bunch direct from their warehouse (which means that they are coming from the manufacturer or from wholesalers). In the past this has indicated discontinuation with some of the other models

Ok, if that's the most important reason, what are the others?

another would be to have a color PDA without mp3...not alot of people want that. and yet another would be to have a PDA duo like was created last year with the N610 and the N710.

msmasitti @ 6/7/2002 3:18:55 PM #
I believe Sony will keep the T615c for a bit longer. It makes a great competition against the Treo 90 and m130. I know that I would choose a T615c over a m130 or Treo 90 anyday.

but the question then becomes: can sony afford to sell the T615 at $299 and still make a profit?

So what about the bluetooth memory stick?

frauen1 @ 6/7/2002 10:28:22 PM #
Could Sony announce that in the US as well? Now that would be interesting...

Early photos showed a silver, red, and blue model. However, some people seemed to think those were shots of the T615 (I don't remember seeing a red T615, however).

There was never a red T-615. There was, however, a red T-600 in Japan, and it was all the rage there. However, Sony believes that American consumers do not tend to purchase expensive electronic devices in red. The likliehood, then, is that there will be a red T-650 but never a red T-655.

Will the T655 have the new Sony Memory Tech?

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/8/2002 4:49:53 PM #
i.e. Memory stick duo.?
RE: Will the T655 have the new Sony Memory Tech?
I.M. Anonymous @ 6/9/2002 11:59:23 AM #
No, it doesn't.

Still no news about a replacement fot the T415 ?

I.M. Anonymous @ 6/10/2002 5:38:06 AM #
The T415 was/is an excellent competitor to the Palm m500. It is slimmer and much cheaper.

If only they could improve the screen a liitle bit...

BTW, is it still possible to find the T415 somewhere?
