Brando has found a manufacturer who can do something many thought impossible: fit a pen into the super-slim styli from the Sony T and NR series. The Stylus/Pen Combo comes in eight colors and will cost $15 when it is available later this week. -Ed

Kyocera 7135 and TÜV Tests

Ed, would you know if it is usual that there would be a TUV test (german test facility is actually spelled: TÜV) for a mobile phone in the United States?
I am asking since this may be a sign, that the phone maybe released in the US and in Europe simultaneaously with of course different GSM frequencies. Just curious to know if you have any insights on that. Otherwise I would love to have one right away :-)

I checked a couple of other recent FCC filings for handhelds (the Treo 270 and 300) and neither one listed a TUV test. However, the 7125 uses CDMA 2000 1X so I don't see it being released in Europe. As I understand it, aren't you exclusively GSM/GPRS?

Yes, you're right about GSM, but some carriers use GPRS and some use HSCSD (another speed technology). So GPRS isn't exclusive, but gaining ground, although in Europe the payment models are still high (in fact some plans are a slap in the face).
I was was aware of the CDMA/GSM contradiction, but I was wondering if Kyocera were to put out the same model-form with two different technologies. Would be sweet!

Kyocera acquired their wirless phone deparment form Qualcomm, the grandafather of CDMA. Nededless to say, Kyocera will not be releasing a GSM version of the 7135.

I know this from common sense. Kyocera has never released a GSM phone, a Kyocera GSM phone has never even been rumored on top of that. As previously stated, Kyocera acquired their wireless group from Qualcomm, hence Kyocera's expertise lies in creating CDMA handsets, not GSM. They are in bed with Qualcomm and you really shouldn't get your hopes up for a GSM handset from them.

Finally after many years with AT&T wireless there is a compelling reason to return to Sprint. Does anyone know when the 7135 is coming to a store near me?

Rick Goetter, marketing director for the 7135, was telling people at the TechXNY tradeshow last month "November, maybe earlier."

It is not known if Sprint will carry the 7135. There have been mixed rumors concerning this issue ranging from Sprint is still considering whether they want to even carry the device to one that they are speeding up the testing process to get it out in September. Its a pretty sure bet Verizon will carry the 7135 though because it was running off of their network at the tech expo where it was introduced.

I think this device looks very promising, but no USB could be a deal killer. Look at page 4 of the draft user's manual on the FCC web site. It's the first of the users manual links. I'll attempt to link it here:

The manual is a work in progress. This stated at various places throughout the manual. According to the webpage on the 7135 on Kyocera's site, the 7135 has a cradle that terminates in both serial and USB connections. I don't think they would make people transfer mp3s over a serial connection.

The 7135 looks great, but wasn't there another clamshell phone/palm mentioned here a few weeks/months back that was almost identical but with hi-res? I don't mean the TREO...I am talking about another one...I wish I could remember what it was. If you remember who made it please let me know.

The 7135 was briefly believed to be hi-res but that was a mistake. Kyocera calls it "high resolution" but that isn't what we mean by hi-res.

Samsung also demonstrated a new smartphone at about the same time but it isn't hi-res, either.

Kyocera 7135 Phone Specs -- From the User Manual

Hey everyone,

I took a few minutes this morning to read the Kyocera 7135 Users' manual and had a few thoughts/questions to interject to the PIC community.

*Serial Connection -- As advanced as this phone is, don't you think they could have used a usb adapter? In one of the first few pages of the Manual it describes how to connect the cable, and it says very directly that you need to connect it to a COM port....so I am disapointed there...I thought I left serial connections behind with my Palm V!

*Mp3 Port? In the manual, the pictures show a user what each part of the phone is....and in the side view picture, it shows the MP3 Port...not Earphone Port. Of course this could be easily exchanged, but in the description for the port, it says where the songs are downloaded....not listened to. I'm certain this is just a problem with the document, because later in the guide they describe how to download songs to your palm....using a neat piece of software that scans the phone just for songs (only on the MMC/SD Card) and lets the user know, and transfer songs accordingly.

*It appears from the single picture of the display (that keeps being repeated throughout the guide) that the display really is 160x160....a pretty big disapointment, but hopefully I'm wrong....who knows?!

*In one section of the guide: 'Using Memos', the phone is referred to as 'Kyocera 7137'....I wonder if there will be other models for sale/release, or if this is just another typo.

*Since my current phone is the Motorola Timeport, I have been completely oblivious to the features on current phone-centric Smart Phones, but the features of a 'Voice Memo' should be neat....I was kind-of envious to not have that available on my phone or even on my Palm m505!

*Finally, if you look at all of the pictures of the phone on the FCC site, you will notice in the External Photos, that absolutely no pictures show the top of the unit. I find it odd, since there is functionality on the top of the unit (the external caller-id)...I wonder what is up with that?


Overall, I can't wait for this phone to be released, it will be a great sigh of relief when I can take my Timeport out of my pocket (only 99 phone book options, small screen, etc)...and replace it with a Kyocera 7135!

The screen is definitely 160 by 160. It appears you also haven't read Barton Gellman's article "First Impressions of the Kyocera 7135 Smartphone"

Yeah - kyocera already confirmed this though - when they showed it at pc expo. It was just the initial announcment that confused people with talk of hi-res (they apparently meant 'hi-res' compared to most phones).

Sorry about the 'Hi-Res Screen' issue...I completely forgot that the earlier review covered that! Also, In my first comment, I mentioned the Serial Connectivity, but in re-reading the early review by Barton, he mentions that the Cradle ends in BOTH Serial & USB cables....perhaps the User Document is outdated/not finished....and a USB connection is included, and the phone is capable in sending data at higher-speeds, if not, it would be a major downfall (especially at transferring 30 or so megabytes worth of Mp3's!

its about time AvantGo revamped their app for the Palm isn't it ?

Surely it's time they supported hi-res screens and external Memory cards etc, etc. C'mon guys!
