Quickies: Sony, Brighthand, World Almanac, TapPad

Sony has officially announced that the MSB1 Memory Stick Bluetooth Card will be available soon in Europe. The GC10 Game Controller and KB20 Mini Keyboard will also be available there soon. -Dan

Brighthand's Editor-in-Chief Steve Bush has announced he will change hats to become the site's publisher on October 1. Bush says he is bringing in "someone who's recognized in the handheld community" to take over producing daily news, though he declined to say who the new person would be. -Ed

For the first time, The World Almanac has published much of its 1,000-page reference source for viewing on handhelds. The 2002 World Almanac includes World Data (The Year in Review; World Geography & Exploration; World History; and Nations of the World); US Data (Consumer Info – Health & Travel; US Cities & States; US History; and US Government & Defense); and Noted Personalities. The databases are now available for download in bundles or individually. Some of these are free, others cost as much as $20. Town Compass plans on making the directories available on SD Cards in the fourth quarter. -PR

TapPad, a Graffiti enhancement, is being offered this week at half price. Normally $20 for the software and 5 overlays, it is available for $10 through this Friday. -PR

''Someone who's recognized in the Palm community''

Hmmm....I wonder if Wes of PDABuzz has found a new job?

I didn't know Brighthand produces news? Must be some other meaning of 'producing' that I am not aware of.

Quote from Wes's Site:

"Imagine my surprise when I read that thread this morning. I know funny, and *that* is funny.

Rest assured folks, the mystery person is not me ... not even close.

I do appreciate the support though, it's strange to still see people posting my name for stuff like this many months after my departure from the PDA website scene. It's a good feeling to know people liked what I did enough to remember it. Although I'm sure it will all be soured once a few trolls show up and talk about how evil I am and how everyone should send me dog poo in the mail."

Chances are, Steve's referring to web site production (i.e. designing & building the pages, maintenance, etc.). As with the film industry, a producer arranges the content in the best manner, but is not necessarily responsible for the creation of the content. With any luck, Steve brought on board someone with background in writing/journalism (and handheld technology, of course) to handle the content, while he takes over design/maintenance.

Hope that clears up any "producer" confusion.

Too bad there isn't a "delete post" function here on PIC... ignore the previous comment (it's mine)... Tuesday morning brain fog. I failed to recognize the "producing" joke until after I'd made the post. Sorry.

Steve Bush will most likely give the job to his alleged brother -- who is well-known for the thousands of dollars Steve brags he's given him to "design" BH. Either that, or that doctor who won the contest will be it... like, who cares?!

TapPad

ardee @ 9/10/2002 9:40:03 AM #
Long-time TapPad user here. At $10, it's a steal. It works well and unobtrusively. I recommend it.

(When I upgraded from my Visor to my Clie, I immediately ordered new TapPad overlays. Wouldn't consider going back to the "standard" bare Graffiti.)

ardee @ 9/10/2002 6:23:48 PM #
Just upgraded TapPad from 1.0 to 2.02. Love the new features!

Hey Tappad guy,

How do NR70 owners order? There doesn't seem to be a choice on the order form for those who need the software registration but no overlays.

(And there is nowhere on your site to email you, so I have to ask here.)

RE: TapPad
TapPadGuy @ 9/11/2002 3:07:23 PM #
Actually there is an email contact on the order page. You can order the standard (Type III) version, and specify you are using an NR70 and do not need the overlays. The price is the same.

World Data - Almanacs

I.M. Anonymous @ 9/10/2002 10:08:44 AM #
Another alternative to the World Almanac is the World Geography Factbook 2001 found at:

www.worldgeographyfactbook.net/

This almanac costs $4.95 but requires iSilo to view up 107 pieces of information for the 200+ nations of the world.

If you already have iSilo this is a great deal!

One nice feature about the World Geography Factbook is that you can read information about a particuloar country like a book. The other product views data in a database style.

Older editions of the World Geography Factbook is available in iSilo format for free on Memoware.

Overpriced World Almanac

wilco @ 9/10/2002 11:15:27 AM #
What 19.95 to have a portion of the book in electronic format?! That's outrageous when you consider that most of the data is freely available on the web and that the whole book in print edition cost less than 19.95. Another reason why ebooks had not taken off...

RE: Overpriced World Almanac
I.M. Anonymous @ 9/10/2002 12:46:25 PM #
Exactly - these companies are looking at this all wrong. They figure they can cash in on those users who are willing to pay more for the 'novelty'. The fact is - its FAR cheaper to produce an ebook then to actually print and ship one (obviously) - so we should expect it to be cheaper to buy (and the companies could even split the difference with the consumer, giving us cheaper books, making them more money AND saving some trees). So whats the deal here anyway?
RE: Overpriced World Almanac
I.M. Anonymous @ 9/10/2002 2:00:45 PM #
World Geography Factbook 2001 is relatively cheap - only $4.95. If you printed it out it is over 1600 pages of information. Comparable print books cost between $15 to 30. You do have to own a copy of iSilo though ($17.50 - a demo copy that works for 30 days is bundled with the factbook).

Its too bad that Palm hasn't improved their eBook Studio for buidling eBooks or Palm Reader (which is free) for reading eBooks. iSilo is a superior product for building eBooks because of its vast array of features.

For those that are short of cash World Geography Factbook 2000 is available for free (still requires iSilo but a 30 day demo is included) from Memoware.

Clie Accessories

I.M. Anonymous @ 9/10/2002 1:47:37 PM #
Sony Style UK doesn't have the new accessories yet but they have popped up on www.sony-europe.com/clieplaza and Dabs (www.dabs.com) has them listed with prices.
