Palm III series mp3 player/module

I just noticed that SPUG has this link to a company that is working on a killer mp3 add-on for the Palm III series. That's not all, the're also working on these additional features into the device: File storage, MP3 player, Voice Recording, Database Server, Text to Speech and many future enhancements. All of that into a standard modem case! I was a little skeptical at first but then I noticed the pictures of the board. The site says it's on schedule to ship in April.

I would rather use a springboard module than a bulky clip on.

I, for one, am excited

As a PalmIII owner, this looks fairly cool!

Amazing

I think it's amazing that this kind of thing is even possible as a Palm III accessory, even though right now it's bulky and amateurish. Of course, I'd like to see these enhancements built into a Palm. Preferably one with the Palm V form factor. I could rack up so much garbage in my Palm, it would be impossible to even find anything. Wow..

Por quù no?

Creo que debemos pensar que todo add on como estos pueden ser utiles, lo esperarù.

Way too cool?

John, you must have a conflict with another program, I ran TIC TAC TOM and did have a single problem.

As for the 'amature' look and feel, I totaly disagree. First How about one of you trying to accomplish what these guys have. I and a Electronics student, and now that this is quite an undertaking. Just doing the board layont takes a considerable amount of time and work. Sure the Palm III Modem Case is a little bulky, but remember that this is a standard, which anyone with a Palm, with the exceptoin of the Palm V, can use. I feel that this was an excellent decision, and totaly support the idea.
There are a lot more Palm III series aout there than Palm V's, and you can use the PalmDock addon for your Palm V.
Also once they produce the Palm III version, it will be alot easier to convert it to the Palm V modem case.
I am definitly looking forward to this product.

Convegence

Ed the Red @ 1/31/2000 8:49:04 AM #
I have to express my opposition to the earlier suggestion that this function be built into a future Palm model. I am worried about the Palm platform becoming too complicated as it tries to be all things to all people. That's what is wrong with PCs. I am opposed to the belief that one piece of hardware should do numerous functions in a semi-adequate way. I would prefer each item do one thing very well. Remember, the only example of hardware convergence that has ever really caught on is the clock-radio.

If there is a new special purpose function to be added to the Palm that requires new hardware, I would prefer that it be in the form of a clip on module like this. That way, people like me have a choice.

I agree completely! I like the *improvements* that have been made, such as the CF slot and improved audio in the TRGpro (I got mine 2 weeks ago!!), but have no desire to have all of the other extras. If they are optional, great, but if not, Palm may have some of the same problems others have had. I, for one, would use a modem, and do use a CF card, but have NO desire for an MP3 player, voice recorder, etc. If I need to record things, I take a mini cassette recorder, and leave it at home when I don't need it. I do the same thing with my GoType, portable CD player, and various other gadgets. And while I always carry both my TRGpro and my cell phone, I don't want them integrated. I am often on the phone, referring to my TRGpro, so what do I do if I have to say "Hold on for a minute," check my phone, get back on the line, etc.? No thanks, give me my TRGpro and my cell phone, and I'll take the other pieces only when I need them.

cool palm iii e
