Grab Network Files With WiFile

Hands High Software has released WiFile. The application allows Palm OS devices with a internet connection access files and folders shared on other computers.

With WiFile users can directly access Applications, databases, Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, MP3 music files, JPEG pictures, and more, all located on their personal computers or corporate servers.

It uses the SMB/CIFS networking standard to directly connect to Windows/Mac/Linux shared directories. The SMB/CIFS protocol, is the standard file sharing protocol for Windows computers. Macintosh OS X computers require that Windows Sharing be turned on in the System Preferences. Unix computers must have Samba software installed.

The software is compatible with all Palm OS 4 and 5 devices and works with VPN software for corporate security. There is a free trial available, the software costs $29.95 to register [Buy].

get SMBmate 1.0.8a and you have almost exactly the same program :-)

why ? it's simple, HHS bought SMBmate and rewamped it into its own really expensive software.

you can get it on www.cliesource.com or www.freewarepalm.com or just try using google :-)

Yes and no. Smbmate doesn't mount an SMB share as VFS media. You still need to copy content to the pda manually to access it natively.

Unfortunately, neither does WiFile. I can't believe they released this commercially before adding this functionality. Yes, there is some exchange manager integration, but this is not the same. Hopefully, if developers add support for their APIs, then it will become more and more useful...

You're going to have to work a little to get a copy of SMBMate today. They did a good job of scrubbing it from the web. Only a few obscure (no offence intended) sites still carry it and most of those aren't in english.

I can't see paying that much for a program that I already have (got it when it was free). If they fixed every single bug in it and slashed the price by about $20, then maybe I'd consider it, because there are a few little annoying bugs in SmbMate.

This is going to be a big enterprise seller. I can see the IT guy now, "Free? No good." and "Hmmmmm $30, ok I'll buy that."

Soon to be seen nowhere near Linux boxes to a cubeland to you.

Rhino is right, corps 'need' to pay for things. Anyone test this back to back with FilePoint 3?

You have that right Gar. IMNSHO, this is one thing that has really really held back Linux from going over the top -- it costs too little to implement.

[This is going to be a big enterprise seller. I can see the IT guy now, "Free? No good." and "Hmmmmm $30, ok I'll buy that."]

The IT guy likely faces shrinking budgets and will think twice about paying $30 for each Palm that's out there in the field.

No, more likely, the IT guy won't buy it or use the free thing because he is concerned about security and support. Mounting SMB volumes from a Palm gives your Palm users opportunities to screw up really badly.

"IMNSHO, this is one thing that has really really held back Linux from going over the top -- it costs too little to implement."

I suppose that's why Apache, another free piece of software, has the majority of the server market.

Apache does file sharing? I thought it was a web server.
