Speech Recognition Available for the Treo 650

Following our recent piece on Palm OS Voice Recognition, VoiceSignal has released more information on their new speaker-independent system for the palmOne Treo 650 smartphone. A demo copy will be included on the Treo 650 companion cdrom.

The Treo Voice Dialing by VoiceSignal application includes speaker- independent name dialing and digit dialing. The VoiceSignal digit-dialing feature, which is available for unlimited use to all Treo 650 users, allows users to dial any number, by speaking the number naturally. Users can also try the speaker-independent name-dialing feature, which lets them dial any name stored in their Palm OS contact list without any training. With the VoiceSignal solution, users will be able to simply speak a name or number and in one step the call will be connected. For example, users can say, 'Call Bob Jones Mobile' or 'Call 408-555-1212' and be connected immediately.

By combining speech recognition, audio and visual prompts, and text-to- speech confirmation, the VoiceSignal solution lets users control dialing features in a true multimodal fashion. This makes it possible for users to initiate, verify and complete a call without having to look at the display, making it easier, safer and more enjoyable for consumers to use their device. And all of the VoiceSignal features are speaker-independent, which means they require no user training.

"VoiceSignal, the market share leader in mobile voice recognition, is excited to be chosen by palmOne for the Treo 650 smartphone," said Rich Geruson, CEO of VoiceSignal. "Our solution allows Treo 650 customers to be even more efficient in their busy lives by delivering an application that greatly simplifies the way consumers interact with handheld devices. Users can dial a name or number in one step with one voice command," commented Geruson.

Treo Voice Dialing by VoiceSignal can be installed from the Treo 650 CD-ROM. Digit dialing is enabled for unlimited use; name dialing from the full Palm OS contact list is offered as a free 14-day trial. An innovative wireless payment and registration feature makes "over-the-air" purchase of the application convenient and fast. For further pricing details and to purchase the full application, please see the palmOne Treo Companion CD or visit here.

Great Direction for the PDA

LiveFaith @ 11/16/2004 1:54:58 PM #
This is a great direction for the PDA to be going. But for the smartfone it is even better. anything that allows the user to keep his/her eyes on the road or task at hand is a very important feature. My T637 has VR for calling and it is great for use in traffic.

One day full "working" VR will make it's way into PDAs and will offer great data input and navgation.

ANY Contact??

treo007 @ 11/16/2004 2:12:59 PM #
Can this be set to pull from only a certain group? I ask because, if you have upwards of 5,000 contacts in your address book, you KNOW it's going to get it wrong from time to time.

I'd rather not be constantly calling the wrong number. It would be great (if it's reliable) if it can be configured to pull from just a 'frequently called list'.

Tungsten T5 doesn't have wi-fi.

I just noticed that no one had complained that the Tungsten T5 doesn't have wi-fi and will therefore be the downfall of PalmOne on this forum. I'd just like to take a moment of your time to correct this glaring oversight:

The PalmOne Tungsten T5 doesn't have wi-fi and therefore will be the bane of the company.

Thank you for your time.

Thank you for pointing this out. If only everyone would post off-topic opinions and information, PIC would be much less useful. tp84: If you have anything to sell (especially medicines from Canada) please post them here as well and make it thoroughly unuseful.

I don't know...while I would have preferred he answered my above question, I thought it was kind of funny.

On my last trip to Canada, pot was legal.
But the T5 should have wifi dammit.

While I have to concur that TP84 is off topic - where the hell did smap77 come from? As a dual US and Candian citizen and licensed lawyer in both countries - I can fairly say you added no value and only sounded ignorant.

FYI - Canadian pharmacy and drug testing is considerably more conservative than the FDA in almost all ways. If it brings cheaper drugs to fellow American citizens then clearly I am missing the wrong. While I know I am personally off topic, your comments on being off topic and then unnecessary crass feedback was both rude... and made you sound ignorant for no apparent reason.

For the record Pot is not legal in Canada, but there are some provinces that turn a blind eye on it. The closest parallel I could draw to hear in the US would be the hand gun registry.

Best wishes to all American and Canadians on the board!

max 3000 contacts

Looks like this is only good up to 3000 contacts. My database is over 4000 and consequently unable to use it. Any suggestions?

Did anyone ever find a voice dialer for the Treo 700p that works with more than 3000 contacts? Thank you. The software that comes packaged with the phone will not handle enough contacts to be useful.
