palmOne to Release Zire 72s Special Edition

palmOne is set to launch a new Zire 72s Special Edition handheld that comes with a silver finish instead of the usual blue. The new model will coexist with the blue version and will be available for purchase prior to the holiday season.

The new Zire 72s first showed up in a listing on Amazon.com. palmOne has not yet made a formal announcement, but has confirmed the model will be released before the end of the month in time for holiday shopping. It has the same software and hardware as well at the $299 MSRP as the blue model. It is not yet listed on the palmOne store.

Some complaints have been reported with the rubber finish of the Zire 72. However to date, only a small percentage units with a paint issue have been reported to palmOne Customer Support.  Product operation is not affected in any way; it is a cosmetic issue only. The Zire 72 was the first commercial product to use a special new Velecron finish from PPG Industries.

About the Zire 72
The palmOne Zire 72 is palmOne's mid-range consumer multimedia handheld. It runs Palm OS 5.2 and comes with a bright 320x320 pixel, 65k color display, Bluetooth wireless and a built in 1.2 megapixel digital video camera.

Hmmm... ;)

1) Hope there aren't any reports of blue dust found in the bottom of the packages!
2) Maybe I'm wrong, but these appear to be pre-rubbed for your convenience.
3) Sources say a kit is included the let you add your own color to flake off. Originally it was marketed as 64,000 colors, but was later changed to "thousands of colors" when the heat was on in the Palm community.

First post too... ;)

Gekko and others...too many others.

I am really beginning, really, to wonder about the overall intelegence of many folks on this Fourm. Maybe it is an issue of maturity, but why do you feel the need to open your mouth all of the time and respond to everything? Especially considering you have such little of value to say. Are you starved for attention? Reminds of that kid in grade school who would not shut up, just to get attention.

Hey, if I want to take a humorous spin on something, it's within my right to do it.

If it's okay to totally flame on these comments, then a little humor isn't a bad thing either.

One thing I've learned here at PIC is that you take the bad with the good, so relax and be glad it wasn't worse.
At least I didn't resort to name calling or personal attacks, so if you want to lump me in with those guys, you can just plain lump it!

I reserve the right to differ and to bear satire.

RE: Hmmm... ;)
statik @ 11/15/2004 3:47:18 PM #
I agree Strider, a bit of humour makes PIC that much more enjoyable to read. Now, your joke wasn't the best, but it was at least done in a good nature :)

Its the constant (and this isn't aimed at anybody in particular) smart-ass-12-year-old-mentality-sarcasm that really annoys me.

I think Palm needs to examine the meaning of Special Edition.

Sorry, I have/had no problems with your comments. Liked the humor actually. It is the other/many folks, like Gekko, who, for what ever reason, are compelled to opine about every posting here. Like anyone other than themselves really cares to hear this continual blathering. Is that a word?

RE: Hmmm... ;)
Gekko @ 11/15/2004 4:19:06 PM #
>"I am really beginning, really, to wonder about the overall intelegence of many folks on this Fourm"

half wit - why don't you post something even remotely interesting or entertaining rather than simply criticize my posts. You bring nothing to the table. Also, learn how to spell "intelligence" before you crticize the intelligence of others, dummy.

Every good PIC thread turns into a spelling BEE and grammatical inquisition. :)

The special edition looks like the demo model at Fry's Electronics in Austin Tx of which the blue paint was rubbed/flaked off a long time ago.

I'm not believing OS6 is going to turn 1 year old and have no models running it. What happened to those BeOS programmers?

Buck up Strider, I enjoyed the joke.

So will palmOne charge less for this model seeing as it would seem to cost them less to make it than the regular Zire 72? Or maybe they're throwing in some extra Michael Jordan software they've got lying around to justify a higher price?

Well, one someone wants to criticize the intelligence of another, they should really first consider their own net worth, education, and intelligence first. It's only right. If you're a nobody, act like it.

What would one's Net Worth have to do with evaluating another's intelligence?

LOL to the Special Edition Zire72 though...

...you'd think they could at least have fixed the camera by reinstalling hte Z71 one :-P

I'm wondering about the intelligence - or lack thereof - at PalmNone. They're supposedly getting spanked in market share by MS, who have smartphones coming out seemingly every other day, yet Palm releases this "special edition" repackaged crap. There's only 1 recent Palm smartphone, a couple others that are outdated, and at least one - the Samsung i550, which I've been waiting for for months - that seems to be nowhere in sight.

Gee, I wonder why MS market share is increasing?! I may be joining that crowd soon if these bozos keep it up.

It is too typical of P1 to do something like this.

As mentioned elsewhere, look at everyone walking around sporting their Michael Jordan m100! (Look up those specs!)

I wonder if Michael still uses his?

I'l do ya one better:

I wonder how many Palm m100s are actually still operating and being used on a daily basis?

Ah! Got it! Thanks!

Your answer above was dumb... ...therefore you MUST be poor.

Right?

The richest one percent of this country owns half our country's wealth, five trillion dollars. One third of that comes from hard work, two thirds comes from inheritance, interest on interest accumulating to widows and idiot sons and what I do, stock and real estate speculation. It's bull****. You got ninety percent of the American public out there with little or no net worth. I create nothing. I own. We make the rules, pal. The news, war, peace, famine, upheaval, the price of a paperclip - we pick that rabbit out of the hat and everyone sits around wondering how the hell we did it. It's the free market - and you're part of it.

Excellent quote from Wallstreet, one of my favorite movies, although the large cell phone at the end somehow makes me contemplate more about the folly of ever thinking that 'on top' a static state of being rather than a constant struggle and movement.

In other, more relevant news, Palm continues to ... I don't even know anymore. I ... I think I may have just given up on trying to understand it. It just doesn't make sense. Or, it does and I just don't understand the consumption functions of the market for handheld devices.

Don't be hard on yourself, Gekko. Speculation is a valid (and important) economic function. It makes markets work better and, ultimately, market signals are vital to the proper allocation of resources for our whole economy. Put it this way, your speculative activities are much more important that my paper-shuffling.

I just read the HP HX4700 ipaq posted at Brighthand. Man that thing just left me with a comfortable feeling. Here's why:
I have found Brighthand to be quite PPC biased. Maybe it is just me but what can I do. Bearing this in mind, I am quite accustomed to find not-so-positive reviews for Palms. However the review made to HP's top-notch-VGA-state-of-the-art-US$650 iPaq showed A LOT of problems! I'll take a few pearls I found on the article:
1.- "It doesn't matter if you are using the Default Layout or the Desktop Layout; the hx4700 still doesn't display much more than a QVGA Pocket PC does on the same setting."
2.- "Even with the global text size on the same setting on both machines, when I open the same spreadsheet in Pocket Excel, my QVGA Dell Axim X30 actually shows more rows and columns than the hx4700 does." The X30 is 320x240 while the HX4700 is 640x480.
3.- "This iPAQ has 64 MB of RAM. This is somewhat surprising; I really expected a handheld this expensive to have 128 MB of RAM." US$650 and only 64Mb? and I thought Palm was cheap...
4.- "Also, if you are a game player, the hx4700 isn't for you. The trackpad is basically unusable for playing games." Sony's jog-dial, anyone?
5.- "The hx4700 comes with Pocket Office, allowing you to view and edit Microsoft Word and Excel files. But be careful about these; they don't support all the formatting the full desktop versions do and will remove from the file any formatting element they don't support." WILL REMOVE THE FORMATTING FROM THE DESKTOP FILE!!!! are you for real????
6.- "The hx4700 has a larger standard battery than any other VGA Pocket PC: 1800 mAh.
With the backlight on half power (which I find quite viewable), this iPAQ's battery lasted me almost 6 hours, which is outstanding." 6 outstanding hours (Who said BIAS?????) Why not compare it with sony's TH55, hell even with the T3!!!
7.- "Unortunately, the semi-soft plastic that acts as a hinge isn't as flexible as it needs to be. This makes the flipcover somewhat hard to get out of the way when you're trying use the hx4700." Oh my God, what would PIC forum say about a Palm with this problem...

All in all, I am relieved to see that the PPC world also has a lot of problems. In fact with this review I tend to think that problems found on a Palm PDA are way easier to solve than what you get in the other side.

Palms just work and that is what I like, of course features and stuff are also important but, for me, it just comes down to "workability" as the primary issue. What will I do with a super sized PPC with all the features listed in the box but with the above problems waiting for me?

The other part of my relief comes from my guess that PPC is increasing their share thanks to a better marketing strategy rather than a better product.

Maybe I am a little biased, but what the hell, I am also relieved.

The rich get richer because they continue to do things that make them richer. The poor get poorer because they continue to do things that make them poorer. By definition, the poor are dumb. Hence, your net worth is a good indication of your intelligence. Numbers don't lie. Note that "intelligence" means making intelligent decisions - not necessarily being educated. There are a lot of educated but "dumb" paupers out there. The world is filled with educated derelicts.

>"NOW you cough up that the rich are smarter because they have MONEY?!"

No - the rich have money BECAUSE they're smart.

Look at a guy like MikeCon. He's poor because of all of the dumb decisions he's made in his life - and will continue to make. Of course MikeCon supports socialist politicians - because he wants them to save him from his own bad decision making - and he wants them to PUNISH those that make good decisions, sacrifice, save/invest, and work hard and redistribute their wealth to him. The great irony is a guy like MikeCon *THINKS* he's smart. But if he was really smart, he wouldn't be poor.

There's an underlying assumption in your post(s) that the #1 goal is accumulation of wealth.

So here are a few thoughts for you to ponder:

#1. Efficiency is NOT about maximum output. Efficiency is about maximizing returns with minimum efforts. Everyone I know who is wealthy AND has built their wealth, with a few notable (and very admired by me) exceptions, works much harder than I do. That's not a sign of intelligence. Not if they talk about the day when they'll retire and spend time with the kids, anyway.

#2. My Net Worth today, while maybe insignificant compared to the 1% you speak of, is ENORMOUSLY larger than it was 5 years ago. How many points has my IQ grown in the process?

#3. What if your goal in life is to maximize your free time, maximize the ability to spend time with friends and family and to enjoy the world, and who gives a rat's a$$ if you never own a new car. How is that an unintelligent decision?

#4. Much of the concept behind the "Matrix" movie can be applied to the *reality* we live in (no, not the robots controlling us etc. etc. etc. ... the idea that there is a *Virtual* reality built by society to enforce adherence to a flawed model of life). AKA most folks are living a lie. Most folks realize they are living said lie on the last days of their lives. Typically those who are close to said people, in those moments say things like "NOW I REALIZE WHAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT IN LIFE, I WILL STOP WORRYING ABOUT SUCCESS AND MONEY AND MATERIAL THINGS AND CONCENTRATE ON HUMAN CONTACT AND OTHER ACTIVITIES THAT REALLY ENRICH ME" ... then they all fall back asleep and go back to doing exactly what they were, until another death wakes them up. I would venture to say that while the richer folks probably get to that day more comfortably, there's no indication that they're any less likely to live in the same lie.

RE: Hmmm... ;)
Gekko @ 11/17/2004 3:02:10 PM #

1. Wealth can be achieved by acting smarter - and not necessarily having to work harder. This is what the poor fail to understand.

2. Building wealth and building IQ can both be achieved simultaneously. The accumulation of one does not necessarily inhibit the accumulation of the other.

3. Building wealth and having free time can both be achieved simultaneously. In fact, wealth helps you have more free time because it allows you to work less.

4. The Matrix was a silly, stupid movie.

The definition of insanity is "doing the same thing yet expecting different results." If you keep doing the same thing, you will keep getting the same results. If the results you are getting are ideal, then congratulations, you are doing great, and I am not being facetious when I say that I am happy for you. However, I have never met anyone who thought they had enough money. If you feel that you could be better off if you had been wiser with your money, then you will have to change something to get different results. It may not be a great change, but some change will be necessary.

Gekko, pal. As a wallet-worshipper, you probably knelt at the altar of Ayn Rand. pretty smart, dame, wouldn't you say? When she died, she left an estate of just $500K cash. Did *that* reflect her intelligence?

As for me allegedly being poor and you allegedly being, uh, financially better off -- well, if others here were as "well off" as you, I'm certain they'd have better things to do than post HERE. (Sorry, Ryan!)

Man, look at all the posts here from Donald Trump, Steve Jobs, Steve Ballmer, Bill Gates -- and even Jeff Hawkins and Donna Dubinsky!

celticmagick @ 11/17/2004 7:56:08 PM #
Gekko,

Rich people get richer because they are greedy and have no respect for life, people, or things that acutally have meaning in life. They backstab, steal, and cheat because they lack personality or true quality. The sad thing is, people like you will even sue their own family. Their money makes up for all that they don't have. In the end your rich self will be choking on the same poisonous gases, water, and food we poor or middle class will be, and all while staring at your precious pile of numbers wondering why it won't save your stupid arse. When you take your bank account figures away from you, what do you have to offer to someone or life? Maybe one day the Whites will experience reality biting them in the arse, but hopefully it will not be at the expense of all those who actually appreciate life and want to contribute to all of mankind - not their wallets.

That from a Caucasian too.

So please, go sit in your over priced car or house that makes up for your lack of manhood, count your numbers and keep your irrelevant comments to yourself.

Finally, to quote Buju: "knowledge begins with humbleness" not net worth.

Best regards,

Jason

That's what centuries of inbreeding will get you. Maybe Dell can get Michael Jordan to do a X50mj Axim or something. Oh, wait. Palm already did that. Ok, how about Claudia Schiffer? That would sell like gangbusters!!

RE: Innovation!
statik @ 11/15/2004 2:53:55 PM #
It might not be inovation, but it is good marketing on PalmOnes part. Throw those two magic words "Special edition" onto any prodcut and joe public sees it as a completely new product. Just look at the new SE black iPod if you don't believe that.

As long as they sell this through regular stores, this should give the Zire 72 a nice boost in sales. hmmm... I might even pick one up now as I was staying away from it b/c of the blue fleck paint.

(In fact so did the whole company till Chrysler bought them out) But the good news was VW came back with the New Beetle 25 years later, so maybe Palm will go away for a while, do some thinking and then come back with something a bit more innovative.

RE: Innovation!
hkklife @ 11/16/2004 2:22:37 PM #
As the owner of both a Jetta and a Passat in the past 3 years, I can safely say that the current VWs, while buggy, are still leagues better than any of their models from the early to mid 90s. Build quality and craftsmanship is stunning but mechanical reliability does leave something to be desired.

I actually see that as a very P1-ish situation---remember everyone calling the original T|T the BMW of handhelds upon its launch? It was so nice looking in that box and felt so solid in the hand. Then after a few months they started going flaky and everyone quickly forgot the luxury car comparisons. Same with the Moto V60 phones from a few years ago.

A fancy metal housing can bring in a lot of intitial sales due to the lust factor but it takes long-term durability (think the old X-series Thinkpads or the Tandy 1000 portable computer) to garner lasting loyalty. That's something P1 hasn't really had since the days of the Vx. I can go to an airport or a convention center at any given event and will be more likely to see PPCs, Treo 600s, IIIs, IIICs, and Vxs than I will see any Tungsten model or any newer Zire.
