palmOne Launches the Treo 650 in Europe

palmOne has announced that the Treo 650 smartphone is now available in Europe with two initial mobile Operators. It is now available in the UK, France and Switzerland from Orange, and Italy through TIM (Telecom Italia Mobile).

palmOne says the Treo 650, will be available in the above countries in early March. The exact availability dates per country will be communicated by local branch offices.

Orange: UK, France and Switzerland
Following the success of the Treo 600 smartphone, which was one of the most successful Orange phones in its Signature catalogue last year in terms of data usage, the Treo 650 is one of Orange's flagship Talk Now phones. Customers have instant access to groups of friends or colleagues at the touch of a dedicated button on the side of the phone. As an Orange Signature phone, it also comes equipped with Orange-specific applications, such as Orange Backup (which allows customers to automatically back up Contacts, SIM data, Calendar, Tasks, Memos, Mail and images wirelessly on a remote server) and Orange Download (which enables customers to receive updated software from Orange directly to the phone). palmOne and Orange are supporting the launch of the Treo 650 with a broad range of marketing initiatives, including advertising campaigns.

TIM: Treo 650 in Italy
TIM believes that the mobile workforce needs to be able to perform a broad range of tasks in order to remain competitive and is committed to providing the necessary combination of cutting-edge devices, network capabilities, multimedia and data services to make that possible through its own EDGE Network. Via TIM, Treo 650 users will get access to a series of specific services, including the TIM Downloads application, which lets users receive updated software from TIM directly to their phones.

About the Treo 650
With Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, Memos and more, the Treo 650 lets users organize and simplify their business and personal lives all in one place. Users can dial contacts by name from their contacts list or enter a name or number on the QWERTY keyboard or on-screen dial pad. Speakerphone, speed dial, conference calling, call history, and caller ID make managing calls that much easier. The Treo 650 brings corporate email and productivity applications to mobile professionals, and combines a full-featured quad-band mobile phone, a Palm OS organizer, messaging and web access functionality within a compact form factor.

The Treo 650 runs Palm OS Garnet v5.4 on a 312 MHz Intel PXA270 processor. It includes 32MB of non-volatile Flash RAM (of which ~23 MB is user accessible), that will stay preserved even when not charged or the battery is removed. It has dimensions of 4.4 x 2.3 x 0.9 inches (11.3 x 5.9 x 2.3 cm) and weighs 6.3 ounces (178 grams). The screen is a very sharp 320x320 pixel high resolution 65,000 color TFT touch-screen display that offers improved visibility in sunlight. It also adds an improved camera, integrated Bluetooth wireless, a removable battery and non-volatile memory.

Nice, but pricy

Given the fact that here in Spain they're selling the 600 at up to € 700, I just don't dare imagine how much will this cost...

It is called local distributor margins and EU support taxes. Try getting an unlocked unit in the states and put your SIM chip in it.

Yes, unlocked, but most locked phones come out at a fraction of the unlocked cost in the UK. Eg. you can get the PDA2K AKA Blue Angel AKA Orange SPV-2000 for £150 with a contract, compared to £575 unlocked.

Can anyone tell me why the Treo 650 cons $699 in the US but € 729 = $ 959.73 in europe ?

This is a difference on $260, why ???

Because Palm does not give a ** about European market.

American tech is usually a lot more expensive in Europe. Part of it comes from the exchange rates, since the US dollar is in a continual state of crash these days.

Empansys is selling them for £209 with a Vodafone contract (Delivery estimate 17 March)

Lets hope Orange put it out at a similar price.
