So that means The Core got a whopping 20 votes from all you Tapwave freaks.

These awards are a sham. Most of the winners are from companies that advertise heavily on the PDA app sales sites. Last I checked, Picard was giving away The Core for free.

"Best Multimedia Solution: SplashBlog"??? Get serious. Just be grateful that Bejeweled didn't sweep every software (and hardware!) category this year...

Yeah. TCMP should be the Multimedia app of the year. Shame no Palmsource!!

Maybe because TCPMP is GPL... I am not sure about this but the Codecs are a port from some other software, right?

Contest rules:
"By participating in the contest, each entrant thereby certifies, represents and warrants that his/her/its submission is the original design of the entrant and the submission does not constitute confidential material, the entrant has full rights to the submission, the submission does not infringe or misappropriate any third party intellectual property rights..."

But TCPMP does meet those requirements...

Or maybe because Blogs are hot these days. Eventhough TCPMP saves a lot of multimedia users from jumping ship to Windows Mobile.

TCPMP may not be a winner at PalmSource PowerUP Awards but in the hearts of many a Palm users, He (Gabor Kovacs/Picard) is...Kudos to all who help and develop TCPMP. Thanks!!!

I'm sure theres a lot of criterion and luck involved .. theres a pile of solid developers who deserve a lot of credit, from those like CESD who bust their rear to help people to PDAMill who've revitalized the gaming market to Picard for TCPMP who're waving the freedom flag and have a large overnight cult following; I think I was going to get it for Shadow Plan a couple years back, but since I wasn't going to PalmSourceDev.. no go. Only folks who attend can get the award, since PS want it to be a good advertising event for the developer involved, which is nice. Theres also a little of the Oscars-approach in it I think as well -- an organization will got some weighting simply because they've done their time and worked hard and never won anythign, so deserve some recognition.

Astraware are great fellows who deserve a lot of credit, and are also helping developers out (dirty cheap audio engine, PDAOffers hosting for free, etc etc), but I'm sure even they were sick of seeing Bejewelled sweep every year :)

The Core Pocket Media Player.

The Core is a free and open sourced media player for Palm OS. It destroys MMplayer in speed, stability, and price(free). http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/

A lot of people have switched over and i expect that the new WMV codec in MMplayer is going to be buggy, have A/V issues, and cost $30 to the product.

The world will end in 2006. Just as it was predicted in the bible along with the release of Microsoft Longhorn.... :p

SplashBlog would also be the beneficiary of the bias towards "data hungry" apps. PalmOne / PalmSource want to keep their wireless carrier friends happy by encouraging apps which use lots of bandwidth.

In reality, this "beta" is more stable and better than all of the commercial video players currently available for PalmOS.

LOL!

My favorite is still from Handago's own "awards". They had Bejeweled2, some ringtone player for Treos, and Pocket Tunes in the same category... "best software for play". How do you realistically compare a game, a ringtone player, and an mp3/audio player that really belong in their own categories?

I heard they demo'd Palm Linux

Do you remember the scene in The Wizard of Oz when everyone sees how bogus the wizard's tricks are? That is PalmLinux today. Remember all those wonderful SD peripherals that were demoed a few years back by Panasonic when SD was announced? That is PalmLinux today.

PalmLinux will not be fit for human consumption for AT LEAST A YEAR. If ever. At this point, PalmSource needs to cut the vaporware BS and S T F U until they have come up with something that is real, stable, and worthy of the name PalmOS. Developers aren't fools and once bitten (Cobalt), twice shy (PalmLinux). Once people like CESD (DateBk5) get pi$$ed off enough that they port their apps to Windows/PPC, I expect a wave of defections to PPC. And if StyleTap's Platform for Windows Mobile ("STP" - http://www.styletap.com/) gets picked up and promoted by a major company, the point may be moot, anyway.

This week's DevCon had the smell of death in the air. I think developers have now lost faith in PalmSource's ability to sustain the platform.

Pépé Gassée and the idiots (his former colleagues at CrApple) that approved greasing his Palm with millions for his useless, defunct company (Be) will be remembered as the ones that killed PalmOS. Great legacy, Pépé. Thanks.

PalmSource claims they'll have PalmLinux ready by early-mid 2006. Yep. 2006. After the Cobalt Catastrophe, it's shocking to see PalmSource pretending they can meet a goal that is technically imossible for them to achieve.

With ZERO devices shipping with Cobalt 18 months after that fabled OS was supposedly released, any guesses when consumers will actually see the first REAL, SHIPPING device with PalmLinux installed? How about 2008. In other words, expect to see PalmOS 5 shipping on devices for at least another 2 years. Incredible. Basically means a 2004 Tungsten T3 or CLIE TH55 is as functional a PalmOS PDA as you'll see for the next two or three years.

If you want a good investment, buy a bunch of T3 in closeout and then eBay them to desperate users over the next year...

I did not attend the DevCon this year, but just got back from the after-event dinner with many of the biggest big name developers in attendance. There was only slightly less buzz in the air than last year. I met a few brand new developers who seemed to be doing quite well, thank you, with their Treo-specific products. Hardly a sign of the imminent death of the Palm economy...

In fact, the biggest complaint I heard was that the weak US dollar was hurting European developers revenue.

RE: "I expect a wave of defections to PPC."

What product for the Palm OS needs to be ported to PPC?
I have a word processor, photo viewer, file viewer, paint program, maps, music, video, most used nearly daily.

Every program I can think of has not only as good a program on the WM. 9 out of 10 have better.
No, I don't see defections to PPC/WM camp as significant. That market is already full of good developers, bought and paid for with the huge support MS can afford to give them.

Yes, but POS defectors need to their familiar software, with the POS UI/ Look and feel. Its a new niche.

There are many specialty apps that are coded by either smaller niche companies or hobby coders that have no identical app for PPC. There are probably several examples from the fields of medicine, law, education, real estate, etc. that people could name.

More importantly is the comfort level derived from being able to use familiar apps. Many Palm users like the apps they've used for years and don't want to try new software. For example, I've used DateBk3/4/5 for 6 or more years and would prefer to use a monochrome Palm WITH DateBk 5 than a VGA color PPC WITHOUT DateBk5. Are there other good PPC datebook apps available? Of course. But like many people, I prefer to stick with what I already know. Port DateBk5 to PPC and I have one less reason to stick with PalmOS.

You crack me up. Really. I have no Palm stock and I'm not delusional enough to think anything I (or anyone else for that matter) post on PIC would be considered important enough to affect Palm's stock price. Thanks for the compliment, though. You like me! You really, really like me!

If you were at DevCon or bothered to actually READ the slides from the blog you linked to, you'd see where PalmSource (optimistically) claims to be in their development timeline. Those of us that understand software development know what a crock of sh1t these "forward reaching" statements always are. Believe whomever you choose to believe. Either way, PalmLinux will NOT be shipping mid-2006.

I stand by all of my predictions and they're almost always correct. I don't trade Palm/PalmSource/pa1mOne stock - it's been manipulated so badly by Palm's management it's laughable.

I'd suggest you go away and don't come back here until July 1, 2006 and we'll see who's correct. If I'm wrong and PalmSource has PalmLinux on a shipping device, I'll donate $50 to the charity of your choice. If you're wrong, you'll have to bend over and let Mike Cane party upon your a$$. Again.
