That wasn't Gekko who wrote that. I was just making fun of the fact that he'd complained Altec Lansing's take on this product idea was the size of a cinder block.

So what does this do?

pmjoe @ 10/25/2005 9:50:56 PM # Q
and where's the "sub-woofer"? Can you actually dock your Treo 650 and play music through it, or would you have to connect it to the line in jack?

just_little_me @ 10/25/2005 11:38:34 PM # Q
I imagine that is the whole point of it... dock and play music. Check out the pics - you can see it attaches to both headset jack, and multi-connector. So audio, power and HotSync all in one neat little unit. At the price the speakers wont be Bose quality, but it's nice and neat looking. Might just have to get one as I dont currently have any sort of dock for my Treo.

Nice job Brando!

Doh, yeah. I should've looked at the dock connector pic. Neither this page nor the Brando features list make that very clear though.

I assume it won't work with...

my zcover eglove pu skin :( Pretty cool device but I already have problems trying to connect just a simple headset so I bet this would not sit well either!

What a Deal

LiveFaith @ 10/26/2005 9:26:09 AM # Q
For $32 it's $18 less than Palm's own cradle. Am I right? If so, this really a good deal to make your office / room MP3ville and have a cradle.

A little adjusting on the base should allow for the LD, T5, TE2, TX and Treo 800p. Right?

Unlikely it'll fit.

No one would care to spend that much time on an accessory for a DYING segment of the market (PDAs).

Remember, Treos are ALL that we need from henceforth. ALL Palm wants to do is sell Treos, EVERYTHING else by dammmed.

Palm users will eventually RUE the day Palm acquired Handspring and those miserably underpowered Treos. The reason the LD is such a flop and the TX has been met with a YAWN by the market is all because everyone is falling over themselves to jump on the blooody smartphone bandwagon, despite its current limitations.

A Smartphone in 2005/2006 is like an LCD monitor market was up until 2005--it might look nifty but the old tech (dedicated PDAs/CRTs) is still the way to go for those that are SERIOUS about getting work done.

"users will eventually RUE the day Palm acquired Handspring and those miserably underpowered Treos."

Your tone implies that Palm acquired Handspring because they wanted to get a nifty smartphone.

I think you are mistaken on two counts. Palm didn't acquire Handspring because they were hot for smartphones; they acquired Handspring because Handspring was dying and Palm couldn't let a major licensee die off and Handspring needed some corporate welfare.

Palm could have created a phone/pda on their own without Handspring. But the acquisition lets the management play stock games and cash out. (all while trashing the company at the same time) The Palm guys are great at playing stock games and lousy at supporting genuine product development.

After the fact, Palm then made the strategic claim about smartphone, and Treos were selling well enough to make this sound plausible.

JarJar;

You are likely correct in your assertions on the motives behind Palm's HandSpring acquisition and their reasons to want to continue their shell game/smoke'n mirrors tactics.

However, my basic point remains that Palm's support of their handhelds & new R&D/support spending has been MINIMAL over the past few years. It's not NON-EXISTENT.

I definitely agree on your claim about "...lousy at supporting genuine product development". The Treo 650 is a REHASH. The TX/T|E2/T5 are REHASHES. The Z22 might as well be a rehash of the Zire 21 with a few LD cosmetic touches thrown in. The LD is the only product that looks like any serious $ was thrown at it during its conceptual stages. The saddest part is that FEWER dollars (ie no HardDrive & just a plain ol' 512mb-1gb storage partition ala T5) would have made it a MUCH better unit.

The DEAFENING silence to my concerns with the TX & CDMA Bluetooth phones may be the final straw for me. I am going to go back to my T5 & V710 combo until my phone dies or my VZW contract is up. I will continue to keep an eye on PIC and the usual websites but until someone (Palm, hacker community etc) resolves this issue, I refuse to be Treoized until the POS-based Treo hardware is up to suff. If the Treo 650 IS the final POS Treo then all the better. They (Palm) have dug their own grave.

Well, what else is there then?
ackmondual @ 10/27/2005 4:35:36 PM # Q
On th PC side, we have 64 bit + dual core processors, DDR3 RAM, PCI-E and dual vid cards..... there's not much else for PDAs as far as I can see.

Sure, we finally have integrated microdrives, wifi, and >64MB user RAM among other features, but what else is there?
Make a bug free handheld? It's possible, but I'm not holding my breath there. Make a top-end, loaded handheld like some of the Clie's? Not enough market for that to sell well. Higher specs? Perhaps...... but agian, Palm is about the basics. People won't buy Palms to play mobile MMORPGs on the go (I know, Sphere that will be released for PPC, PPC smartphone, and optimized for x51v's VGA screen and vid card is a counter example otherwise, but it's a little early to see how well it'll fare) or run Bit Torrents. 300 to 400MHz is sufficient for most gaming and productivity needs.

Some kind of wolf/dog hybrid, perhaps?

AdamaDBrown @ 10/26/2005 2:54:18 PM # Q
Don't get me wrong, this is pretty cool, but how and why did they include a miniature wolf? Or am I misinterpreting the phrase "sub-wolfer?" :)

RE: Some kind of wolf/dog hybrid, perhaps?
Altema @ 10/27/2005 8:20:49 PM # Q
It must be a sub wolfer, because there's no way it has a sub woofer! You can't even get audio specifications on it, which are probably 250hz to 12khz or worse.

However, I must say that aside from the claim to produce low frequencies, it does appear to be a pretty cool enhancement. Wish they made one for my phone or T3.

USB Power Surge!

just_little_me @ 10/31/2005 11:59:31 PM # Q
This thing draws too much power from the USB port and Windows complains bitterly about it!

Why doesnt it have a separate power supply for when you are uysing it as a HotSync cradle? Or why not make it work within the specified limits of USB...? Kind of a dumb design for a cool idea... :-/

Also the audio hum is very annoying... certainly not Bose quality on this puppy...
