The important question is

Does it support SSL in the background?

If so, +1 on Chatopus!

Palm TX + 1GB SD + Motorola v3x = awesomeness

Yes, GTalk is working in background.

One thing that I still miss (compared with Verichat or Chatteremail for example) is the ability to set "sleep hours". I wish you could set the program to go to sleep between certain hours if it runs in background. I don't think it would be very hard to implement such a feature.

Another minor thing is that you need to press the on screen "Send" button, the "Enter" key does not send the message, it enters a carriage return.

Overall, not bad! I might but it...

chatopus is great

Chatopus is an easy chat-solution for all chat networks (except skype). Works in background, reliable, stable too....only one thing: it does not look very smooth. Zen of palm program as they say...

From their site:

Q: Can Chatopus run in the background?
A: Yes.

However, if you enabled Secure Connection (SSL), Chatopus can only run in the foreground. This is a limitation of the built-in SSL library of current Palm OS.

GTalk requires SSL, so it cannot run in background. I guess chatopus is not that great. At least, not for GTalk users.

Needs some fixes

crawfpm @ 9/19/2007 12:08:37 PM # Q
Couple much needed fixes to this version are the need to have the Enter key Send the message (so you do not need to tap the screen Send button) as someone earlier mentioned. Another is the option to turn off notifications of new messages from someone if you are in the middle of a chat session with that someone. For instance, if I am exchanging messages with my wife, why should IM+ keep alerting me to her messages to me when I am viewing them as they come in. Background only alerting (almost all other IM programs support this feature).

Without these two fixes, I am not willing to register this program for my wife and myself.

IM+ Mobile Messenger and Skype

T. @ 9/19/2007 1:18:50 PM # Q
It is nice that this runs in background mode with their Skype application also running in background mode. The comnbination of the two gives me comlete coverage. I have had a few resets with the Wifi card on a T3 that I have not sorted out yet but none so far using the T-Mobile network.
