PowerClip Ends the 4k Clipboard Limit

PowerClip is a new free app that breaks the Palm OS clipboard barrier from Palm Powerups.com. Though the current Palm models with the enhanced PIMs have a slightly better 32k limit, many Palm Powered devices are still stuck with a scant 4k clipboard. Dmitry writes, "PowerClip is a simple, FREE, 1k, no-nonsence no-slow-68k-code clipboard expansion tool. It expands the normal Palm OS clipboard from measly 4KB to 64KB. No UI, no nags, no paying, no slowness, no nonsence. Enjoy."

Thanks to Hal Lasinskas for the tip.

Yup, its dead.

Yup, Palm OS is dead.

Where are the trolls now? Is all this good news a sign from above?

Legodude, as a recent jumper of the POS platform I expected better from you. This software just means exchanging a small cell for a bigger cell. 64 KB is not even enough to copy the whole "Where's the beef" thread (190 K) or the whole PalmAddicts front page (86 KB).

Its admirable that supporters manage to patch and extend POS way beyond its Databank-like roots, however a saying about silk purses and sows ears come to mind.

This TreoCentral thread also comes to mind ( http://discussion.treocentral.com/showthread.php?t=108066 )

Surur

They said I only argued for the sake of arguing, but after an hour I convinced them they were wrong...

Why would anybody in their right mind want to copy the "Where's the beef" thread? ;-)

I do find it amazing what some of these guys can do. The "patch job" that the third-party developers have performed on OS5 has certainly helped extend the life of the old POS. It may be dead in the sense that it will not be further developed by the OS author, but these guys keep giving it periodic shots of adrenaline and the heart beats on a little longer. Kudos to Dmitry G. for all his software and hardware hacks.

It might not be the "mythical color HandEra", but I'm liking my TX anyway.

Works fine on my Treo 650 (yes, I'm using that again, despite the stupid keyboard). Just like the old - and without cluttering up the command bar (as with CutPaste5).

A curiosity: even without this, I have been able to copy much more than 4k of text from Blazer to Memos (ie, the clipboard limit does not seem to be apply in Blazer).

legodude552,

Tuesdays are "the CD is dead" posts in compact disc forums.

Wednesdays are "the television is dead" posts in television forums.

Thursdays are "the radio is dead" posts in radio forums.

They'll catch up Friday.

Works well on my T3. Brilliant enhancement. However my curiosity is that I cannot exceed teh 4k limit when attempting to copy text from Versamail. Regardless; brilliant

I could sure use this.
I get tired of clipping just one screen at a time to get Bible verses from MyBible to WordSmith.
One of the reasons I upgraded from a Zire 71 to a 72 is because Palm promised a 10k copy buffer. I have not seen that work on my 72. Maybe it could get a 10k memo from one place to another. I have no 10k memos. If I am going to create something that big I creat a WordSmith Document. I really like WordSmith. If only they would update to support native files. Alas.
Once in WordSmith I have found that I can select huge sections, but of course can only clip copy them to other WordSmith documents.
Great job Dimitri. Now, for a look at clipping graphics, music, and other stuff to go from one program to another. That would be even nicer.
Better go get it and try it out.

in answer to relyons:

Albert Chu, VP of Business Development at PalmSource:

no further work is being done around Garnet by PalmSource

Seeing how:
- the successor to Garnet (i.e. Cobalt) was stillborn
- the PalmOS emulator is only an element of the currently pie in the sky Access Linux Platform
- Palm are selling Windows Mobile Treos
- there are no other high volume licencees of Palm OS
then the Palm OS is at best on life support or at worst, has died on the operating table at the hands of the Access surgeons.

fair enough, there are developers still producing titles for Palm OS but there are developers still producing titles for the Apple Newton, the Amiga and the Atari ST.

Oh and I'm most grateful for this software that raises the clipboard limit; it was an abomination for Palm/PalmSource to have set it so low at 4K.

Any more isn't so useful
iebnn @ 3/1/2006 3:39:51 PM # Q
I considered writing something like this but that would support virtually unlimited size copying/pasting (using streaming DBs instead of record-based ones) but what's the point when the Palm OS text field control cannot handle more than 64kb of text? Sure, some applications have customized fields that support larger blocks of text (my upcoming text/HTML editor, DragonEdit, can handle as much text as you have free memory) but it is very messy, tedious and complicated to do, meaning that not many applications go beyond the standard 64kb field. Consequently, you'd rarely be able to select more than 64kb of text at a time since most applications have only 64kb fields.

This field size limit issue isnt really something that can be hacked to fix either. Hopefully Palm will have the good sense to do away with this limitation with the linux platform.

Please be sure to post info and a URL for DragonEdit here on PIC - (when it's ready) - there's plenty of smart folks that'll be interested in taking a look and providing constructive feedback.

BTW - will it provide a HTML preview feature (or perhaps launch the default web browser via exchange manager) and support 320x480 displays?

Yes, 320x480 and 480x320 etc. are all supported. It will the the first and only true text editor for Palm that can edit files of any size off the memory card.

It launches your browser to preview pages. It will also upload your pages via FTP. I'll definitely be sending an announcement to PIC when I release it within a week or two.

Shouldn't that be...

Tawpave Doziac arleady dah 46k?

Shame Tapwave didn't manage to get the Zodiac more established in the market before the PSP hype-machine got going. I still like it's twin-bin SD slots - a feature that I'd take in preference to a chunky HDD weld-on effort as found in the LifeDrive. Palm could give you a 2GB SD card to get you started and you could buy a second if you are a power user needing all that LifeDrive storage capacity in a smaller, pocketable form-factor.

KultiVator;

How 'bout a slightly sleeker TX formfactor wrapped in black anodized aluminum. Add a 2nd SD slot, charging LED, removable battery and voice recorder/mic. Tweak Garnet a bit more and increase the heap size. Add a 256mb-512mb internal storage drive if there's $ remaining. There's your $350-$400 flagship PDA.

Unfortunately it's not gonna happen. $300 is THE top price point for "conventional" PDAs going forward. 128mb is also the program RAM ceiling for Garnet so the chances of seeing a mildly refreshed TX are slim to none. Palm's certainly not going to sink any more $ into tooling or a new formfactor.

What Palm SHOULDA done is vastly different from what they DID do as well as what they WILL do. Alas.

As far as the Zod, Tapwave should've have put the precious $ they threw at game developers and used it to bolster the Zod's bundled software and media capabilities. It should have been marketed as the uber-PDA media player FIRST and with its gaming capabilities secondary. The Tapwave unlocking mechanism & software store was also doomed from the start.

The 32mb Zod 1 never should have seen the light of day. Instead, they shoulda fielded a Zod 1 w/ 128mb and a true Zod 2 with internal wi-fi and a larger capacity battery a few months after the initial launch. Also hindering Tapwave was the (releatively) high cost & limited capacities of SD cards at the time. Now with <$100 2gb cards available it'd have been a no-brainer for 4gb of pure non-HD storage bliss. Bundling an SD card in the box is never a good price--let the user bring their own and put all of your $ into bolstering the underhood features of the handheld (look at the PSP).

There's a lot of sense in the evolution of the TX you mention - refreshing it and putting back the premium features (heap/voice rec/charging led & CRADLE!) needed. With brand new TX devices currently changing hands for around £100 on eBay (less than $200 US) I'd think it's be possible to bring out a classy 2006 Tungsten TZ that most of us could find desirable and hit the $300 mark (after Palm have milked the early adopters for $350 for a couple of months).

Would be nice to have a worthy end of the road Tungsten-class device on sale, as a stop-gap between my trusty T3 and whatever the next big thing in handheld computing ends up being.

hkklife @ 3/1/2006 4:42:44 PM # Q
Oh, KV, I think there's TONS of sense in what I mention. The unit I mention has "features" that are currently available on OTHER Palm devices. And all of it is well within the realm of feasibility for poor ol' FranenGarnet.

The problem is such a device would be a lower-margin (due to the "quality" of its construction, the tooling for a new FF, component costs etc) and lower volume than what Palm's typcailly accustomed to (Zire, T|E, Treos).

I'd personally rather see all of the features I mention @ $350 MSRP without a cradle vs. half of those features & a cradle at $400. Either way, it'd STILL be a nice unit. Palm should send their clasic POS PDAs out with a band rather than a whimper. Of course wasn't that the strategy for the LifeDrive a year ago?

Also, isn't it OBSCENELY quiet this year on the rumor front? Normally we have leaked pics & semi-accurate specs/price points for the spring releases. Might Palm have NOTHING in store for us this spring--or might they be abandoning their traditional March/October release cycle?

Yes - so would I.

Yes - would be good to see one last real Tungsten see out the Garnet era in style.

Also, isn't it OBSCENELY quiet this year on the rumor front?

It is entirely possible that the TX is Palm's final traditional PDA. I hope not - but like you say, it's March and we're yet to see the spring leaks spring, if you know what I mean?!

But then the TX is quite fresh, the E2 still perfect for it's segment of the market - and is the Zire line really worth a refresh at at all? A LifeDrive 2 could be a possibility - if Palm were smart enough to give it huge amounts of heap and maybe give it some obvious out of box functionality to make use of all that storage space. e.g. allow it to be a multi-purpose PDA but equip it with decent media potential, bundle TCPMP & PalmPDF, offer custom skinning tools for the DIA (another missed opportunity - people like to customise their expensive possesions).

4k certainly wouldn't be enough space to catalogue the daily portion of bull dished out by the PIC trolls.

Now we've all got a 64k clipboard to play with, perhaps we'll go longer before seeing the same old predictable 'The Universe is gonna end tomorrow for Palm users because their OS doesn't multitask, doesn't have a BlueTooth V2.0 stack and Hawkin's shares will be all gone in less than two years' kinda crap we've been used to in recent months?

It did not work on my TX

robera @ 3/1/2006 4:24:38 PM # Q
I have installed PowerClip.prc on my TX. After the hotsync be concluded it was necessary a soft reset to update de system.
So to test the expanded clipboard limit I have selected about 2k of text inside Word To Go and I tried to paste on Memo. Only 1k was pasted. I have tried also to copy one Memo that has about 4k but when I press copy the message "clipboard limit exceeded" was shown.
What am I doing wrong?

I'm wondering if programs like D2G, WordSmith and Blazer all use some kind of app-specific clipboard code that interferes with this.

Yeh, I've encountered an issue with copying from QED (my favourite doc editor) too. QED limits the amount of text you can select - at a rough guess at about 6k. It doesn't look like a bug in PowerClip though.
