Palm Announces Treo 750 Windows Mobile 6 Update

Treo 750 Windows Mobile 6Palm has announced that an update to the Windows Mobile 6 Professional operating system will be available for Treo 750 smartphone customers around the world later this year. The Treo 750 is available from carriers in the United States, Europe and Asia and remains a key part of Palm’s international expansion strategy to make Treo smartphones available to more customers. For Cingular/AT&T customers, the update also will facilitate High-speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) capability – allowing faster data-download speeds on 3G/UMTS/HSDPA networks.

“Palm continues to work closely with Microsoft to maximize the benefits of Windows Mobile and to deliver the best mobile experience to Treo customers,” said Joe Fabris, director of wireless solutions at Palm, Inc. “Our hallmark Palm experience combined with the benefits of Windows Mobile 6 on the Treo 750 will continue to deliver a great productivity tool for businesses across the country and around the world.”

Windows Mobile 6 paired with Exchange Server 2007 will deliver email enhancements such as HTML-formatted email messages, the ability to set an out-of-office message remotely, and live links to Microsoft SharePoint documents. Also, the Treo’s color touch screen makes line-of-business applications easier than ever and allows users to take full advantage of new mobile versions of Microsoft Office Outlook, Office Word, Office Excel and Office PowerPoint. Microsoft’s Direct Push Technology continues to be available out of the box, giving Exchange users fast, automatic wireless updates of their email, calendar items, contacts and tasks without additional third-party software or fees.

Treo 750 Specs
The current Treo 750 runs Windows Mobile 5.2 Pocket PC edition. It is powered by a 300MHz Samsung processor and has 128MB nonvolatile flash memory (60MB available for storage). The display is a 65k colour, 240 x 240 pixel touch screen. It also has integrated Bluetooth 1.2 wireless technology. It has a new side mounted mini-SD memory expansion and a 1.3 megapixel camera with 2x digital zoom. The battery is a removable 1200 mAh Lithium-ion, good for a claimed 4.5 hours GSM / 2.5 hours UMTS talk time, with 10 days standby time.

It has dimensions of 111 mm x 58 mm x 22 mm (4.4" x 2.3" x 0.8" inches) and weighs in at 154 g (5.4 ounces). The casing is slightly slimmer than the 650/700 series and the casing has a "soft touch" paint finish.

I am not a huge fan of Win mobile, but it is nice, just once in a while, to see an article at PIC that doesn't immediately have the usual slough of haters posting how awful Palm is (while still using Palm devices).

Maybe they are all on vacation? O_o

I have the gang on speed dial. Let me give them a call...

Foo: Hello? Listen chaps.. it's getting a bit muted in the comments. Yes, quite. Perhaps it's time we liven things up a bit? Do lets engage in a round our usual of denigration. I haven't beaten a man while he's prone for some time, and my fingers need the exercise. Anyone up for a game?

Voice: Count me in!

PenguinPowered: You got it!

Gekko: Wouldn't miss it for the world.

Foo: Excellent. What say we all meet afterwards at Twiggs for a coffee and cheese danish. There's a good chap.

Well, the WM6 update IS a very positive sign, regardless of the arguable amounts of influence Microsoft had in pushing this out vs. Palm themselves.

I think Palm's 2007 lineup is rapidly shaping up on the news of this and the recent miniSD-brandishing GPS kits.

GSM:

Treo 680, Treo 750 (WM5 now, WM6 pre loaded later in the year), and maybe a 320x320 version of the 750 with WM6 for the fall--perhaps a 760?.

CDMA:

Treo 755p, 755w (320x320 screen, 750 formfactor, WM6)

Then of course there's still the mysterious Hawkins project which at this may or may not even come to market.

Palm still DESPERATELY needs to address the outstading issues of the 700p ROM update, Vista versions of the Palm Desktop software, an official statement on SDHC compatibility, and add SOME sort of new 320x480 or better device to the lineup (Treo, PDA or otherwise)

Pilot 1000-->Pilot 5000-->PalmPilot Pro-->IIIe-->Vx-->m505-->T|T-->T|T2-->T|C-->T|T3-->T|T5-->TX-->Treo 700P
