AppForge Folds, Assets Sold to Oracle
Mobile Development software provider AppForge went out of business and shut down its services late last month. New reports this week confirm that Oracle has purchased the intellectual property assets of the former company.
Atlanta-based AppForge was founded in 2000 and provided tools for Visual Studio developers to create comprehensive on-device mobile applications for Palm OS, Windows Mobile and BlackBerry devices. Its main features included translation of Visual Basic .NET and C# apps to mobile systems, custom cross platform applications, on device debugging and support for many of the latest Palm and Treo devices.
Oracle is not commenting on the terms of the deal or its plans for AppForge and whether former customers can expect any support or updates. There have been some updates about the sale and transition posted at Wikipedia.
The AppForge boost (run time program) requires that the end-user license the booster with AppForge. Currenty, there is no way for AppForge customers to do this as their servers have been offline since late March. Therefore, none of the former customers can roll out new applications or support additional devices in the future.
AppForge Alternatives
Other mobile application development companies are offering specials for former AppForge developers. Satellite Forms is offering a discounted "transition Incentive", CASLsoft has as limited time reduce price and NSBasic has posted a AppForge porting guide.
UPDATE: Oracle has posted a note about the acquisition which in part reads:
Please note that Oracle's acquisition of AppForge's intellectual property did not include the purchase of the company as a whole, or the purchase of other AppForge assets including its customer contracts. Accordingly, Oracle does not plan to sell or provide support for former AppForge products going forward.
