Treo 755p and 800w Heading to Verizon?

Rumor: EngadgetMobile are reporting on a potentially enormous list of summer handset launches for Verizon Wireless. Of course, the highlight of any such report for PIC readers is the report of a new Treo. This latest report reveals not just one new Treo heading for Verizon but a rumored two upcoming releases! Lending some credibility to this rumor is the fact that the usually reliable "HTC Kid" is credited as Engadget's tipster this time around.

The article (originally leaked from the PDAPhoneHome forums here) goes on to reveal that the estimated launch date for the Verizon version of the Palm OS-based Treo 755p is July 4th, which correlates fairly well with earlier reports.

The second release date given -- and one that seems much more dubious -- is the mention is a Treo 800w for September 13th. This could be anything from an outright hoax to a mildly upgraded unit with Windows Mobile 6 to the rumored "Mercedes" Treo hinted at by Ed Colligan last year.

Verizon, unlike Sprint, has not yet EOL'd their version of the 700p and no details of the Verizon version of the 700p ROM update status have been revealed by Palm. The Windows Mobile 5-powered Treo 700wx is Palm's is its only current CDMA Windows Mobile-based Treo, and was released well over a year ago so the release of a successor device seems all but certain.

UPDATE:
A member at Howard forums has posted a supposed screenshot of Verizon's internal list of upcoming releases. It clearly shows the rumored Treo 800w, codenamed "Vincent" set for release on 9/13 after being delayed from 8/27.

The screencapture (mirrored here) also shows the 755p release date confirmed for 7/4. This device's codename appears to be "Staubach" (after football great Roger Staubach?) and shows the device's original release date was to have been May 9th. This would have launched the Verizon version of the 755p simultaneous with Sprint's version. No reason has been given as to the delay.

Update:
The Treo 755p for Verizon is now available. You can read our review here, or visit the product page at Palm.com.

Treo Who?

LiveFaith @ 6/7/2007 12:22:20 AM # Q
Hours have elapsed and not even a single comment about a new Treo.

Theory I ...
Since Palm will probably just move the app buttons around, change the paint scheme, and use memory stick as the new media format, folks are not that interested.

Theory II ...
The W in 800w does not stand for 'W'indows, but rather 'W'iFi. Since everyone who want a windows smartfone have migrated to the scads of WiFi, GPS, and BT2 devices on the market.

Theory III ...
I guess after the Foleo announcement, Treos have just been forgotten about. They have become little more than companion slaves now. Kinda boring.

Pat, is this a poll? If so, I'm voting for Theory I.

Actually, it might be bad thing if Palm does debut something "really different" in the Treo line. There could be numerous middle aged men dying of heart attacks at the shock of it all.

How many "must-have features" can you remove from a TREO before calling it a TREO remains simply Marketing fluff?

CDMA Treos

vorlon @ 6/7/2007 1:39:53 AM # Q
In the iPhone hysteria, nobody seems to notice that there's no CDMA/EVDO iPhone in sight, giving Treos an advantage. As if iPhone would be in the same market as Treos and Foleo and T|x: businesspeople. I'm not saying power users like most of the PIC folks would not buy Treos and Blackberries and WinMob stuff, but the prime market is still the monkey suits.

And as Apple might abandon the smaller European countries, (what's a Vodaphone? Does it work on water?! T-Mobile? Isn't T-Ford kinda old?!), I just might buy a 680 anyway, as the only Blackberries here are in the gardens.

Hours have elapsed and not even a single comment about a new Treo.

Whatever the topic, there's always the same broken records:

Treo is OBSOLETE, biaaatch!
I want my OLED-PDA!
I want my 3,5 mm headphones!
Nokia internet tablet sucks!

GPS!

vorlon @ 6/7/2007 3:25:40 AM # Q
According to rumours, 800p will have GPS, so 800w should also. 800w should have WinMob 6 and 320x320 resolution. So 800-series is the Mercedes Treo.

Would the 800p with GPS still have Garnet?
GPS-assisted Google Maps on Foleo?

Rumors are floating around the world web that Palm is to release a new device this year – the Treo 800p, which will be commercially available from Sprint operator in the end of 2007. Reportedly, the info is provided by a reliable source.

The info is quite poor at the moment, the Treo 800p is designed for GSM and CDMA networks and features GPS-navigation capabilities.

Probable Specs of the 800w

ChiA @ 6/7/2007 4:14:04 AM # Q
Extrapolating from the specification of Palm's recent releases - 700p, 700wx, 750, 680 and 755 - the Treo 800w will probably offer:

- Windows Mobile 6
- internal antenna
- 128MB NVFS RAM (60MB available to the user)
- 1.3 megapixel camera
- Bluetooth 1.2
- Micro SD slot

- A choice of colours - sickly green, sewer brown or urinal yellow.

- Wifi using optional microSD wifi card only available from Where's Waldo? Enterprises in Shangri-La and El Dorado.

The recent trend in Palm models gives us little to excite us about future models.

755 for GSM

swieder @ 6/7/2007 10:35:22 AM # Q
Where is a 755p for us GSM users? I would take one from Cingular or T-mobile. Is the Treo that unpopular in Europe that GSM support on the 755 is the last one to be released?

Treo 755 on Verizon Delayed AGAIN?

JRAD @ 7/3/2007 2:23:38 PM # Q
Not sure how reliable this is but I just spoke with a Verizon rep who told me that July 4 is a no go. Since that it tomorrow and there appear to be no changes to the Verizon or Palm site I think this might be true. He tells me that end of July might be the time frame but maybe even later than that. Kind of a bummer since I am eager to get one.

If there are any more updates please let us know!

gatzke @ 7/5/2007 10:24:38 AM # Q
I was bummed yesterday too. My Verizon sales guys say they have no clue when it will be coming in either, but maybe they don't tell the sales guys anything.

I played with an iphone yesterday, but there are some issues that would make it a show stopper for me.

-Keyboard stinks. Best way I could get anything typed accurately was hold it in one hand and point with the other.
-No correction in web URLs and email addresses, so you have to be perfect.
-No period in the keyboard (period, /, and .com buttons in web browser kbd)
-Touch buttons too small. Although my Treo 650 screen buttons are often too small, but I rarely use them)
-No removable media (Why switch to mini SD Palm? idiots)
-No video recording
-No editing MS word documents
-No EVDO (Edge was slow when it worked)
-No sereo bluetooth (http://www.softick.com/bluetooth-audio/)
-No third party applications (Chess, new browser, core media player, etc)
-No laptop networking using phone (http://www.junefabrics.com/palmnet/)
-No removable battery
-No way to quickly dial contacts
-No way to navigate single handed (five way rocker rocks)
-No tactile feedback (I like a click when I hang up the phone)
-No GPS addons like
http://hardware.smartphonetools.treobits.com/content/accessories/10-95--2230.htm

It does have:
-Slick gui (that gets in the way, browsing on safari was stinky. Zoom and scroll, zoom and scroll, not too impressed. Sideways was nice)
-Wifi built-in
-Widescreen
-More MP in camera (2.0 vs 1.2 in treo 755)
-Thin form factor
-Did I say sexy GUI?

Neither have-
-Built in GPS
-Wireless networking for letting laptops online easily

So the Treo pros outweigh the cons. I am sticking with a new 755p as soon as I can get it.

I'm eagerly awaiting the 755P to come to Verizon. I've gone to 3 separate Verizon stores in a 150 mile radius (one in Richmond,VA) & had their top sales agents call Verizon. Per all, nothing is in the pipeline. I'm so bummed...I really need a new phone & don't want to wait much longer.

Here we are on the 18th and not a whisper about this phone. That is a real concern. I was hoping to have it prior to a conference I am going on in early August. Looks like that won't happen.

waiting.... waiting.... waiting...

Does anyone think that the potential buy out of VZW by Vodafone will improve things for this company?

Just came from a Verizon dealer and they said that the 755 would be coming . . .soon.

No date given, and I was just starting to check online when I came across this thread. Didn't even know about a potential 800 series.

Store person in San Francisco says 11/20 is ETA

Spoke with a Verizon associate today. He said it is not certain but they think it will be ready in two weeks (in time for the Thanksgiving shopping weekend).
