Palm Unveils Ares Graphical webOS Development Tool

Presenting at the Open Mobile Summit today, Palm has unveiled their latest weapon aimed at bringing more developers to webOS: Ares, a drag-and-drop web-based tool aimed at speeding up webOS development even further, said to be released by the end of the year. PC World has the scoop:

In a demonstration at the conference, a Palm engineer created a search application for the Flickr Web photo site. Using a simulation of the WebOS phone interface, he dragged logos, a search field and button, a list widget and other components onto successive screens of the application. To link the new application to Flickr, he used an Ajax request that called a Flickr API.

Palm has been strongly pushing the ease of webOS development as one of its biggest selling points for developers. The release of a GUI tool should help strengthen this claim to fame.

"Ares will work on a variety of Web browsers, including Firefox and Safari, though Palm has not worked on making it work on Internet Explorer", Abbott said.

Why not Firefox & IE? Safari is less than 4%, must be the x-Apple guys.

Or maybe, just maybe, IE's non-standards compliant architecture simply doesn't support something like Ares. That's the reason Google has given for building their Chrome Frame Plug-in for Internet Explorer; that IE simply doesn't support the technologies which would allow Google to run Google Wave, so IE users will have to get a plug-in which will run Chrome inside a frame.

Amen !! To be honest I couldnt care less about IE. FF with its plugins makes development so much easier. I couldn't go without firebug and the rest. Plus each version of IE behaves differently.

Nail. Head. Plus, any serious web developer - the people Palm are trying to lure - is going to have Firefox installed anyways. (Firefox finally surpassed IE6 in marketshare this month and now holds nearly a quarter of the total market: http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2009/11/october-2009-browser-stats-firefox-finally-passes-ie6.ars)

wow that's a real bend and twist of statistics to make something look better than what it is.

Eh? If you check out the stats, IE as a whole (not just IE6) is slowly declining in share every month.

And being more prevalent than IE6 _is_ a useful stat, as IE6 is one of the great offences. Subsequent versions of IE are much more compliant, and thus much less a pain to developers. A lot of devs are writing off IE6 in terms of support, as it won't cost them that much anymore and _greatly_ reduces development, risks and support costs.

... and I hear one big collective "Meh!"

Palm, you have a lot to do to make up to screwing over developers to make employee payroll! Will they ever come back?
