ZioGolf 1.06 for Palm OS
By Kevin Crossman
September 5, 2001

ZioGolf is an outstanding Golf simulation for the Palm OS Platform. Based on Zio's successful Pocket PC version, the Palm version boasts high quality graphics and gameplay, along with a unique position in the marketplace. The game also provides a unique additional "game" - that is, learning how to play the game itself (the game lacks a manual).

ZioGolf Sample Image ZioGolf comes with two courses, the easier Sedona and more challenging Hidden Valley (additional courses are available from ZioSoft). The game also features high-quality color graphics (or, so-so quality grayscale for non-color Palms). The swings are realistic and the game features an overhead map of the hole you are playing. The sounds are minimal but may optionally be turned off.

Gameplay is quite good - on "par" with older PC-based Golf simulations. There is a three-click swing gauge that can be enabled using the stylus or hardware buttons. Changing clubs is easy though the game does an excellent job of "caddying" and choosing an appropriate club for you. Wind conditions are sometimes an issue, causing you to change your aim to stay in play. Overall, the non-putting gameplay is excellent.

Putting is more difficult. The interface is non-intuitive and extremely unforgiving. Puts which should be "gimmies" in real life and somewhat difficult to make and at times whether you make the put or not does not appear to follow any logical pattern. That said, at least one doesn't have to deal with banked or curved greens.

There are several special features. You may practice your driving or your putting - which is essential for getting up to speed at the game. You may enable Mulligans or not (a lifesaver for me!). A right hand / left hand option is available but appears to have no effect. When you play, you may play against up to three human or computer-controlled opponents. A skins option is also available.

There are few complaints with Zio's implementation. The Palm-standard menus are not enabled, forcing you to click through their Pocket PC-like interface screens. More importantly, the game comes with no in-game or electronic manual - and Zio's bloated and slow-loading website is no help either. If you have no familiarity with PC-based Golf games you will be lost. All players should be prepared for a sharp learning curve.

Thankfully, a demo version of the game is available which allows you to test the features for yourself. The game, with two courses, consumes over 630K of RAM.

We must applaud Zio for their fine ZioGolf implementation. If future titles are this good, we will forgive the support (or lack thereof) and legacy (e.g. Pocket PC) features. This game is unique in the Palm marketplace and is a fine addition to any gamer's stable of games.

ZioGolf/fatal exception errors

I.M. Anonymous @ 9/5/2001 6:59:25 PM #
I tried the demo of this a few months ago and I kept getting "Fatal Exception Errors", so I took it off my palm. It would be a good game if this were not occurring.

Apparently earlier versions were unstable especially on new models (e.g. m505). 1.06 should work better.

Well it is a good game, although the resource file still SUCKS. Like the other guy, I always get fatal exception errors, and it happens everytime I finish a golf course on my Clie. And leaving the ZioGolf file in RAM always resulted in fatal exceptions after a soft reset... Now I have to place it in the memory stick using PowerRun... Game design and graphics are great, but the stability IS FAR FROM PERFECT.

Make sure you are using the right program. There are three. 1. for palm color 2. for palm handspring color 3. for palm gray. I had the same problem until I found that I was installing the gray version on a color device. Oh!!! No!!! that is noy going to work. Now the game plays great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How do you know which file is which? They all look same.

Great game

I have this game on my PPC and it is really fun. Oddly enough my wife who doesn't like games, likes this alot. Ziosoft did an excellent job in making this and am happy to see this making it's way around to other platforms.

Anyone who has this... and tried it, I would love to know how itplays on the Palm as I am thinking about buying it for relative for their Palm.

I have a Palm IIIc and Play ZioGolf 2 with several courses. It's a lot of fun and although it takes lot of memory, I love to play it. I even configured the Palm GamePad to play it.

I never had any problems! By the way: Upgrade to ZioGolf 2, and do not play ZioGolf 1.0x ...

Whenever was there a Ziogolf 2 for Palm?

Is it just me, or?

Hasn't this been out for like several months? I remember getting this game for my m505 when I got it in May, and it wasn't new then. What's the release date on this?

Who cares? What difference does that make?

Well what if I posted a review of the Palm Vx? Wouldn't that be a little silly. That is what he's saying. This is old news.

The game may have been out for a while but it is not universally known to the Palm community (unlike, say, Zap2000!).

It was my idea to suggest running this review - as it was a really good game but I hadn't seen much mention of it anywhere (took me several weeks to get around to doing the review).

Also on the dated review issue: yes, a review of a Palm Vx would be a bit silly now. a) because it has been out forever and reviewed to death and b) because newer hardware is available.

Neither of these issues apply to this software-based review. a) This game has been out for a while - but not forver -- and this thing definitely hasn't been reviewed to death and b) until a new version of this game is available then the review is "timeless" in that it serves the needs of folks looking for a cool game.

Finally, remember that the story was presented as a **REVIEW** not a **NEWS** piece. If it was presented as News, then yes that would not make as much sense.

I.M. Anonymous @ 9/6/2001 12:34:15 AM #
It's a review, and not news, and why is the assumption, that just because you know about it, that we all know about it.

I.M. Anonymous @ 9/6/2001 5:16:11 AM #
Boy, you give an example, like the Palm Vx, and someone beats you on the head. I got your point, you could have used a toaster instead, but then again, the same guy would focus on the toaster and not the fact that its still old news.

Probably a marketing stunt. Usually, they will call...lets say Ed in this case...and ask him to review a product. They pay him to review it knowing that a ton of people will see it. It doesnt matter how old the product is. If someone calls you and offers you a thousand bucks to review a Palm III, would you take it? Absolutely...

In all fairness, these companies will ask that the reviewer be nice but critical....

Probably a marketing stunt. Usually, they will call...

What? That is preposterous! First off, we do not get paid or accept "bribes" to post news stories or reviews. Heck, we did not even get a free copy to review. Kevin bought the registered version and offered to send us a review that he did on his own time. Please lighten up people.

Yes, the game has been out for some time now. IMHO, reviews are relatively timeless as long as the product is still on the market. If you hadn't heard of it before than it's news to you.

I totally agree with you. And it's ALWAYS nice to see a good review, no matter how un-fresh it is. I love reviews here. Please keep up good job.

A friendly word of warning!

JDM @ 9/6/2001 6:58:30 AM #
I've just downloaded the ZioGolf trial and sync it onto my m505.

I've tried to open the game 3 times now and it has caused my palm to do a soft reset each time.

I think its safe to say that there are still problems with ZioGolf working on newer palm models.

Its a shame 'cos it looked like a fun game. Is anyone else having similar problems?

It is safe to say that this game does not run properly on the m505. I've tried 1.05 and 1.06 and it only runs the first time you install it. After that you get a blank white screen.

I also downloaded this to my m505 last week and tried to play it, and gave up after 4 soft resets. I never did get the game to launch. I ended up just deleting it. It's a shame, because I am not a big game player, I just like to have a few available while killing time in the car waiting to pick the kids up from sports practices or piano lessons.
