Wow... that is quite a review. Thanks! I will just send folks I talk to here rather than try to say it all myself. Keep up the great work.

RE: review
rw747 @ 9/29/2003 5:46:19 AM #
Just seen the thing in the flesh as it were and was mightily impressed. I went back to the internet to check here and read the reviews which seemed to be fairly black and white. The white guys really liked it and talked my language as a really portable unit that works with both wi-fi and bluetooth.

One guy mentioned the T3? What is that or rumoured to be that?

I have a T2 now which is fine except for the damn keyboard which used to be a novelty but is just a plain nuisance carrying around. No probs for smaller keyboards for me as long as the things work.

Application compatibility do concern me. I must have Datebook, SplashID, Docs to Go 6 plus email and web browser.

I bought the UX50 and there are nice things and not so nice.

First off the migration route sounds really nasty. Sony say 'we don't support Palm upgrades' and of course vica versa. NOT good news.

It seems that I cannot have both a T2 and UX50 on the same computer.

If some kind soul can advise otherwise this would be excellent.

What are the actual dimensions of the display (relative, say, to the NX80V shown in one of the photos)?

RE: Short, feature rich but...
TTrules @ 9/26/2003 5:48:22 PM #
The size of the screen is 3.2 inches. That's .6 inches less than the 3.8 inch screens of the previous clies.

lanyard loop, keyboard, interface

mpermann @ 9/15/2003 1:16:23 PM #
Just a guess, but I think a good use of the lanyard loop would not be to hang the UX50 from your belt/neck, but to secure it to your wrist. In case you dropped it, the loop around your wrist would prevent the fall. Thinking about how many times I've dropped my Tungsten T (many more than my other Palms thanks to the fidgety slider and snap cover) that might not be such a bad idea.

I played with one of these at CompUSA. Couple things bothered me:

1) I have to look at the keyboard to type. I am a touch typist and I like to look at what I'm "writing". Graffiti offers this advantage--I don't have to look at my hand when entering data. I wonder if you'd eventually be able to type w/o looking on this (or any thumb-style) keyboard. Can anyone who has owned a Blackberry, Treo or other thumboard PDA tell me if they learned to type without looking?

2) Didn't like the unfamiliarity of the proprietary Sony interface. I've heard you can switch the UX50 to the standard Palm app launcher. Would be great if the full review commented on this.

RE: lanyard loop, keyboard, interface
Admin @ 9/15/2003 1:28:15 PM #
yes, you can switch to the standard palm os launcher. After a bit of getting used to the 3d launcher is alright, but a little gimmicky. I've got a number of things I will go into further on the full review, I'll try to cover all questions so if you have any post here.
RE: lanyard loop, keyboard, interface
GenericMan @ 9/15/2003 1:39:45 PM #
The lanyard is mainly for personalization. In Japan, Hong Kong, and elsewhere in Asia, everyone has some kind of charm or decorative strap on their cell phone. Putting a lanyard loop on PDAs is just an extension of this.

The manual for the Japanese Game Boy Advance actually contains a warning against swinging the GBA around by an attached strap. In addition to the GBA and Clie, I've seen lanyard loops on my Sony digital camera and my Japanese-English translator.

RE: lanyard loop, keyboard, interface
Raptor1313666 @ 9/15/2003 5:02:16 PM #
Concerning the lanyard loop, I used the heck out of it with my CLIE T-615C. The device was nice and thin, but also a little slick. A wrist-strap wrapped around my palm (my hand, not my PDA) did wonders for "holding" security.

I cease using the loops when I get my case (typically a Vaja), but in the interim it works very well.

Perman,

I used to be an avid Blackberry user. You can type without looking with the Blackberry keyboard. I'm not certain if the form factor of the UX50 would allow the same accuracy.

I really like Rhino skin cases, theyre tough and they leave the ports accessable. http://www.saunders-usa.com/rhinoskin/

Im looking into the UX50 for my first PDA for internet, music, and video viewing use. I have e-mailed about the RhinoSkin case for the UX50, no reply yet.

Gilding the Lilly?

flevy @ 9/15/2003 1:26:50 PM #
In my experience, a PDA is attractive because it performs a small number of essential functions well which allows it to have excellent ergonomics. With all due respect to Sony's engineering excellence, the UX50 looks less like a PDA and more like a laptop designed for a hamster.

JPVann @ 9/15/2003 11:46:13 PM #
I had mine for 5 days - found some major issues I could not live with (though having wi-fi was tough to give up!):

1. Screen too small for everyday, hard use.
2. Having to pull out the damn stylus just to move from field to field is STUPID! Tab, arrows do nothing in most apps.
3. Found I coulod not get in and get out like I can on my Tungsten T - and its what the heck I own a PDA for.

Bottom line - nice toy if you have the money; not very useful for someone hard charging in sales like me all day - I already have a wireless laptop if I need one.

I too found this annoying then someone (sorry i forget who) from a previous article posted said they thought that "ctrl N" & "ctrl P" (next & previous) jump you up & down lines in the forms. I went to Comp USA to try this & actually its "ctrl O" & "ctrl P" but they work !

How do apps translate onto the screen?

Louis Berk @ 9/15/2003 1:52:54 PM #
I read another review elsewhere which concerned me about how apps translate to the landscape screen. If this device is to be useful to me I'd want to be sure that DocumentsToGo, ToDoPlus, Verichat, VersaMail et al ran effectively.

The combined Bluetooth/WiFi is VERY attractive (Palm, please note in your forthcoming products).

phoneboy @ 9/15/2003 2:13:24 PM #
Great Review.

1. Of course adding portrait support is a no brainer. C'mon Sony, start using your brain.
2. The lack of the traditional 6 applciation and up/down buttons is disturbing. Think of all the games you can no longer play on this.

But wait! Look at all of the real estate around the screen! Putting application/up/down buttons on the 320 side of the screen would make using it tablet style in portrait mode a dream.

Fix those two shortcomings, Sony, and you can have my $700. (Even though that would still be overpriced.) Please hurry, my NR-70 is getting old.

RE: For $700 this device still needs...
Beavis @ 9/15/2003 2:32:40 PM #
Don't wait for Sony to fix any of these shortcomings in a software update. They will fix it in the UX70.

You mean traditional 4 app buttons and up and down.. not 6...

And the hting needs a heck of a lot more ram. Why in the hell did sony give their 700buck unit 16megs of normal ram? wtf? Should have at least 32 if not 64-128..

Look like I'll pass this up and get a 128meg zodiac and a wifi sd card when they come out.

jamesgood72 @ 9/15/2003 2:57:05 PM #
The game situation is not as bad as you think, although not as good as it could be. The up/down rocker is recreated in the up and down arrows on the keyboard (just above the hardware buttons). With NesEm, for instance, you can program quite a comfortable selection of keys for it.

One extra hardware button would have been good though.

RE: For $700 this device still needs...
jamesgood72 @ 9/15/2003 3:00:11 PM #
Oh, and Helf, the 16MB for programs is more that I need. As for data (pictures, mp3's, videos, emulator roms, word docs, spreadsheets, etc), memory sticks are more than convenient. I don't want to have to Hotsync each time I add MP3's etc, it's much better to swap the memory stick into my PC...

My cents on that (even re-occuring) debate.

Price is a real "ouch." This looks to be more of a laptop replacement than most. True, it's not comparable, but a very small, light notebook (Best Buy & Sam's) is the Avertec with 30mb hd, 256kb; DVD/CDRW; 12" screen; under 4 lbs for $849. True, not equal at all by comparison and portability, but the UX make sit look like a great bargain.

the rest is likely the Palm OS itself and the bundled sony applications
RE: Memory?
jamesgood72 @ 9/15/2003 4:04:09 PM #
8MB embedded memory in CPU.
16MB user RAM.
16MB heap.
16MB backup memory.
19MB internal memory stick.
The rest is preinstalled apps, I believe (Netfront, etc).

-James.

RE: Memory?
naturefreak85 @ 9/15/2003 8:54:32 PM #
still doesnt add up that adds up to only 85 megs of memory what about the other 19? and it is 29 megs for memory stick not 19 megs of memory stick

RE: Memory?
Fidel @ 9/16/2003 5:09:00 PM #
It is:

8MB RAM embedded with the processor
+32MB RAM on the 'mainboard'
-16MB for applications
-16MB for dynamic heap
+64MB FlashROM
-16MB for backup of application-RAM from above
-29MB for 'internal MS'
-19MB for OS and pre-installed apps in ROM
8+32+64=104.

Also, the 29/19MB for MS/OS+apps differs in size between japanese, US and european versions. I believe the 29/19 is for Japan, the US (only english) ROM is smaller, thus leaving more space for the internal 'MS', the european version has only 26MB for this, because there the OS is included in three languages (english, french, german).

My thoughts exactly. This would be a slick device if it had a much nicer screen.

I've played with it a bit, and this review really understates how poor the screen is in comparison to other recent PDAs.

RE: Bleh
Miss Clie @ 9/16/2003 8:51:10 AM #
I had a feeling that I wasn't going to love it due to the portrait-only and the fact that there had to be a keyboard.

Saw it at Best Buy, and was really underwhelmed. The display is TOO SMALL! Next to my aging 760C, the display looked like a cell phone. I switched it to the standard menu system to keep my eyes from twitching out, then tried to use graffiti, not being a keyboard person at all.

Well, vertical graffiti is a pain in the butt! The menu items are right next to it, so where you used to write large and get a number instead of a letter once in a while, with this layout I hit some random menu key and blew myself right out of the app I was in. I didn't like that at all.

The folks at Best Buy were hard sell; the guy came over 10 times while I was fiddling with it. Not to mention the little CLUX-sized brochures that were scattered ALL over the store in stacks. Sony must be attaching a lot of weight to this rollout; I don't think I've ever seen a brochure from them before.

I'm still holding out for the virtual graffiti Garmin-esque no-keyboard Bluetooth standard size palm. I try these others because that's all we've been offered. When they get it right, they'll get my money.

dulinor @ 9/15/2003 5:07:16 PM #
I've had my UX-50 for a week. I pretty much agree with the review - I love the dual wireless, you get quite good with the keyboard quickly but Sony hasn't done as good a job as Handspring did with the Treo in making the OS keyboard-controlled.

One important feature to some that was not covered was the UX's excellent support for video. 30 fps without breaking a sweat. I've been on two road trips since I got mine, and watching a couple of videos on the plane has been great.

Landscape application support is still developing - some apps (VeriChat) have indicated support in a future version, others we just have to hope. I just hope a decent email program follows soon! Widescreen email is great, but CLIE mail is terrible!

(For reference, I switched from a Tungsten T. This seems to have slightly more robust bluetooth support, at least to a Sony phone)

RE: I like mine...
jamesgood72 @ 9/15/2003 6:03:50 PM #
Hey Dulinor,

What kind of videos were you watching? Native .MPG, or converted ones? I haven't tried out the supplied software yet, I just stuck a 54MB MPG on my memory stick, and I don't think it played at 30fps. It looked more like 15 (like a digi-cam video, rather than a TV broadcast, in smoothness).

I haven't seen how Handspring integrated the keyboard; I agree that it seems the UX could have more seemless in this regard.

Overall though - the machine rocks, in my opinion!

-James.

I used sony's image converter app (bundled) on a few DiVX files at the super-high quality setting. (11 minute Harvey Birdman: Attorney At Law episodes - around 640x480 native)

Relatively rapid conversion, butter-smooth playback.

Have not tried mpeg-1 files, but those are supposed to work.

And you don't need MS Import anymore, because you can copy files via WLAN and SmbMate.

RE: Cradle
phoneboy @ 9/17/2003 7:14:03 PM #
Wifi and USB 1.1 are nearly the same speed, but does the bundled software allow easy setup for a Wifi sync? Will it sync with your computer, which is configured to work off a Wifi access point? I think the answer to both is "no." (I think)

Forget about syncing with BT or IR. They are way too slow. I've done it on occasion and I don't like 10 minute syncs.

How to enable Decuma?

dhaupert @ 9/15/2003 9:52:43 PM #
I feel like a newbie, but I just can't figure out how to use the Decuma input system on my device. I saw it demoed somewhere a few months back on one, and while the keyboard on this device is great, I'd like to play with the Decuma input system. The docs say to refer to a handbook, which didn't come with my unit apparently. Did anyone figure out how to enable that instead of Graffiti 2? Thanks in advance!

RE: How to enable Decuma?
Admin @ 9/15/2003 10:26:21 PM #
Hey Dave, it took me awhile to figure this out! Decuma is installed on the UX50, you have to go into the decuma app > prefs > and check make decuma input default

for some reason you can not have the decuma input area replace the standard graffiti area, to bring up Decuma you have to call up the on screen keyboard from within an application in order to use it. pretty clumsy method if you ask me.

RE: How to enable Decuma?
SuccessWizard @ 9/15/2003 11:54:17 PM #
Ok, I had to go to the on-CD manual for this one too. Decuma is enabled by default -- no settings needed. Go into any app where you would input text -- like Memo Pad. Start a memo, open the virtual graffiti area and tap on the "a" or "1" in the little grey circle. This enables Decuma for that particular use.

There doesn't appear to be on-screen keyboards for this landscape-only unit. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Not stupid at all. I was the same way.

Choose the app, make sure the graffiti area is shown. Press the stylus on the little "a" or "1" on the graffiti area. Whola, Decuma appears.

If you press on those letters when it does'nt make sense for actual data entry (for instance in the Launcher area) Decuma does not appear. So make sure you're editing something first.

I'll Call Mine Mini Me...

SuccessWizard @ 9/15/2003 11:58:26 PM #
Setting next to my aging Toshiba laptop, the UX50 looks like Mini Me with Dr. Evil.

I really like mine -- not just sort of like it I REALLY like it.

I REALLY like the landscape-only screen -- I don't see a good reason for portrait on this particular unit. I used an Acer Tablet PC for about 6-months and rarely rotated the screen after the first few days.

I REALLY like the keyboard -- especially the dedicated numeric row. It fits my big hands nicely. The keys were surprisingly easy to feel and use, contrary to the advance reports. I actually stopped in at Circuit City just to see if the reports of poor keyboard action were right. After 60-seconds, I bought one I like it so much. Now, keep in mind a Blackberry, Tungsten C, Treo, TG50 and NX70 were all too small for me or too hard to use because I had to envoke numbers with an aukward set of gyrations.

I REALLY like the app buttons that are there -- this is a connected unit and they initiate connected apps. The Jog Dial is positioned as the up/down buttons would be. Sure, this will mess-up gamers, but I'm not a gamer per se.

I REALLY like the lanyard grommet -- I have the wrist strap in mine and it has already save it from crashing to the floor twice since Friday. Sure, you could go with a neck strap too.

I REALLY don't mind the partitioned memory -- cause that's pretty much what it is. Contrary to popular reports, you can install apps that will work on expansion media in the Internal Media space. I have Bejeweled, My Bible, Bubblet and other expansion card friendly apps installed in there. Also, that area does NOT appear as a drive in the Data Export / Import app for the Memory Stick. You have to sync the contents into it or move them on the handheld itself.

I REALLY like that Sony is using the Palm Audio API for the first time here -- AeroPlayer works fine on the unit, but it does cause it to drag slightly. I see that as something Aerodrome should fix soon.

I REALLY like the dual wireless of the UX50 -- I've paired the Bluetooth with my Timeport 270c and used the unit with my WiFi at home so far with HAPPY results on both fronts. This leaves the MS slot open for a MS.

I REALLY like the slimline cradle -- it takes-up little room and fits in a pocket nicely for portability. I REALLY DON'T like that Sony wants $49.99 for additional cradles! They shouldn't cost more than $9. I'd get one for my briefcase and car IF they were $9. As is it, the $49.99 tag keeps me from getting any extras.

I DON'T like the lack of on-unit charging slot -- but I can live with it. I DON'T like the little door thingy that covers the USB port -- it is a pain in the butt to keep out of the way when plugging the cable in. I DON'T like that it isn't bundled with any real software add-on's for business use (ie: Documents to Go or Quick Office) -- but, I had plenty of copies from previous handhelds and ended-up upgrading to Quick Office Premier and Snapper Mail anyway.

I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY DON'T like the micro-stylus -- it't like using a toothpick for a stylus. But, I don't like normal styli anyway and use a Cross Morph most of teh time. I actually bought the UX50 because it had an ample keyboard that didn't cause my carple tunnel affected hands to cramp-up as using a stylus or smaller keyboard does. This being said, I'll end up buying a refil pack of micro-styli because I know I'll lose mine sooner rather than later.

I sat in a local eatery with my UX50 in hand, my Palm Powered baseball cap on my head and my Timeport 270c on my belt. I pulled the unit out of the case, opened it, pressed the email button and it did a Bluetooth connection automaticlly. I pulled my email headers, trashed the spam and such and marked a few for fetching. Then I fetched my email, read and typed my answers easily and happily. An Air Force Major and his wife watched on the whole time while their food got cold. I got my work done while I waited to get my hair cut and while I waited in a really long line at the grocery store (people buying hurricane supplies here in Maryland.)

I've made the decision to replace my laptop with the UX50. I'm outfitting it to be as fully functional as possible for real computing needs. Sure, I won't be creating PowerPoint presentions, developing web sites and such on the UX, but I will be able to support those functions in the field quite nicely. For me, and this is personal, this unit is pretty close to perfect overall. It's what I stated a few years back would be the perfect PDA -- hey, maybe Sony owes me some money...

Actually, the "internal MS" is available in the Data Import App. If you launch the app from the utilities group in the home screen (not from the MS icon) there's a pulldown menu in the upper right. From there you can select MS or Int. Media for the Data Import function.

You can also (at least from the Mac) install to the Internal Memory as well.

Mike: you like this unit about as much as I dislike it. But then, I don't like clamshells and as a touch typist cannot and will not use small keyboards. There are, however, two elements in particular that irritated me: the tiny (and relatively dim) screen with that ugly black border that is horrible to look at (and makes ebook reading a truly ugly experience), and the simply horrible ergonomics (first Sony unit where the jog dial, which I use a lot on my 615, is virtually unusable owing to the portrait-only mode). I am, however, itching for a new Palm, so I hope the TT3 is it. radleyp

I really like the UX as well. But alas, I returned mine today. Not because I don't like it, but because I'm not 100% sure I'll like it better than the T3 coming in a couple of weeks. I plan on waiting until it's available, then make my decision between the T3, UX50, and whatever smartphone is available in the US at the time. Buying new toys is fun, but waiting..........not so fun.

Mike,

You're thinking like me on this one. It really is just what I was looking for. Luckily, since I preordered it before I had ever seen one!

The number row on the keyboard is great - people make complaints about the keyboard, but having the numbers on dedicated buttons is so useful. The weird thing on the keyboard for me is the three modified keys. Shift, Ctrl and 'blue dot'. Why three? No keys have more than one extra function so why should I remember that one is blue dot, one is shift and another ctrl? Strange.

As for the USB cover - I sync'ed with it once, now I use Wifi (at home) or Bluetooth (at work) exclusively.

The ONLY thing I'd really like changed is a 1MP camera.

Cheers,

-James.

Thanks for the great Hands-On review!

I am saving up for one. I think basically, if the price was lowered, everyone would like it.

Nothing really bad about MP3, WiFi, Bluetooth, keyboard, Camera, all in one machine without the need for accessories sticking out of a card slot.

Agreed - good review.

I've decided to pick one up -- Of course my ailing Prism is in no shape to argue. Got to wait until Friday though.

Admittedly it could have been priced a little cheaper - but it isn't out of line with the rest of their line. I like the size, battery life, dual wireless, more builtin memory than I could have dreamed of on my Prism.. I thought I wouldn't like the screen size, but found no problem with it playing with it at the store...

I'm dissapointed that some apps are being reported as problematic on the UX50 - Avantgo and Wordsmith for one. I expect to have to put up with a month or two of waiting for various Apps to be landscape-capable and stable on the UX, not to mention for someone to come out with drivers and/or a full-size keyboard. I think by Thanksgiving this should be a KILLER setup!

SSL support on UX50?

jax @ 9/17/2003 10:57:11 PM #
Hi,

I'm interested in purchasing the UX50 for work. I've used the Tungsten C and I found the lack of SSL support drove me mental. I couldn't get to the https site for my company email login. I was wondering if the browser on the UX50 will be able to do so? This is my biggest concern right now (no point in getting wifi if I can't read my work mail....)

Can anyone help me?

Thanks!
Jackie.

badkangaroo @ 9/21/2003 4:09:40 PM #
Yes, I was able to connect an account I had that required a 1024bit encryption. NetFront is a surprisingly capable browser.

I've had my ux50 for a week and I paid for it with my sony points. This is my first palm device, I've been friends for many years with a few people who work at palm and work with palm so I've been seeing the evolution of the devices throughout the years. Video is important to me and the video capability along with the keyboard were the two primary selling points. Im already able to touch type with my thumbs. Demo models at most retail stores have the cradle holding it to the counter, I found that once my fingers were able to wrap around the sides naturally typing with my thumbs became much easier. (D and J as homekeys for my thumbs)

The screen does seem a bit small, but coming from a newton, everything seems small.

Last night I was chatting (VeriChat connected via 802.11 thanks to the linksys they had at the coffee shop) to my mother who lives in Los Gatos, near San Jose from a coffee shop in Downtown Glendale, near Los Angeles. There was a band playing, I was able to send her a movie of them with audio while sipping on my cappuccino, not bad.

I had worried about battery life, then realized I was there for three hours, chatting the entire time, and still had 39% battery life to go. (I had turned the brightness down to conserve, but I'm not sure if that had too much to do with power.) Being that it's a sony product I was worried about battery life, vaios are notorious for such things.

One thing though, I don't know where to put files so that the Flash Player will find them. anyone have an answer?

UX50 Keyboard Tips

Admin @ 9/18/2003 12:58:04 PM #
I've just discovered that there are a number of CTRL shortcuts built into the UX50 keyboard, they are just really hidden.

Press Ctrl + K to bring up a list of keyboard shortcuts, you can bring up the menu and command bar from the keyboard as well as a bunch of other things.

it's awful

mj6798 @ 9/20/2003 10:25:39 AM #
I just got to try this thing out and I think it's awful: postage stamp sized screen, slick keyboard with virtually no tactile feedback, no portrait mode, and lack of keyboard integration into the applications (you still have to poke at the "OK" button on the screen with your finger). And NetFront is as buggy and slow as before. And all of that costs $700, a hugely expensive handheld.

Unless you have lots of cash to dispose of, don't bother, this is not a good deal. The Sharp SL-7xx series shows that this kind of clamshell hardware can be designed well; Sony, in contrast, got just about everything wrong.

Nice post. It's amazing to see how small the UX-50 is, given all the features it packs in. Too bad they couldn't have minimized the border on the case frame and used the 3.8 inch screen from their other hires+ CLIEs.

If Sony's next generation can add portrait mode, better quality screen, better keyboard, CompactFlash slot and 128 MB of user-accessible RAM I would choose it over a laptop.

Totally agree. I think their next UX-60 or whatever will have a bigger screen, and built-in portrait mode.

Maybe CF slot if they can possibly fit it in. Although I don't know why they would do that. It can accept MS Pro up to 1 gig right now. So I "think" that's enough even for advanced users.

no arm processor!! no 4 button.
termy @ 10/11/2003 3:58:16 AM #
I very much like this pda. Very small, plays movies,mp3 plays some games. Wifi and bluetooth.

What I dont like:

Why cant we just take the back button and reconfigure it as a 4 button!

Why is there no arm processor. I tryed some games, sonic from sega. I hope they could do a soft emu. Or I guess Im returning that product and wait for the ux-60. Hoppefully it comes with the arm processor and the 4th button.

Its the best pda, I seen so far. Besides that Im very satisfy with the device.

The reasons for wanting CF is the flexibility + reliability of that memory format, the peripherals available and the low cost of memory cards. Of course, Sony probably doesn't care about this and will be more interested in using their CLIEs as a way of forcing consumers to use Memory Stick.

Please get the help you need. If you won't go back to your psychiatrist any more, at least try to get some insight into your problems. Please.

I showed your posts to a psychologist I went to school with and she has been reading what you've written here and at other sites. She says your posts are a "cry for help", but she feels your fragile ego will not allow you to seek help. I hope for your sake you prove her wrong. Many of us who read PIC are woried about you.

TUT, showing an internet message board post to a pyschologist friend of yours worries ME. It makes me think, "Who has the bigger problem, Mike Cane who enjoys restrained ranting and insults, or TUT who actually talks about what their online psyche is like to someone else to analyze online personalities." Frankly, I don't give a damn, but if you're going to insult him, do it right. Like tell him he's going to be stuck with that mono screen forever because he is too bitter and finds flaws, no matter how insignificant, in everything. That usually works. ;)

Hey, here's an idea for wasting.. I mean passing more of your friend's time. Why don't you get them to do an analysis of each of the 20,000 members of PIC? You don't want to unfairly give free treatment to only one person, right?

Sometimes the truth is just not funny. At all.

My opinion.

Shadrack @ 3/21/2004 8:42:25 PM #
There seems to be a negative twist on most peoples comments. There also seems to be a lot of negative from people who don't own a UX 50. Having been the owner of an original palm, palm V, HPC, Cassiopia 115, and now a UX 50, let me give my opinion.
I bought mine because my casio died from a drop, and I had just purchased a Sony DSC 717 dig. cam. Been a while since I used the palm based OS, and must say I love the changes. I say that as I use my ATI TV Wonder Pro to record all the shows I like to a directory, and then use the image conversion tool to change them all over to the Sony format. Now when I'm stuck waiting anywhere, I flip open the extremely sharp screen and watch a few minutes of Seinfeld, perfectly smooth and perfectly clear. The people I have shown this to have been blown away. Next, I pop in a memory card from my camera, and pull up some pictures. Using the jog wheel, it is easy to zoom in and out, and a touch of the screen and drag moves the zoomed images around effortlesly. Of course, on the same memory card, I have some tunes that sound great on the Clie. The screen flips around nicely to be held in one hand, the keyboard works great, and being able to roam around my house while I'm browsing the net, or sending email, is very cool. Now that I have figured out how to wirelessly hotsync, no cables for me, outside of charging. The casing is very well done, the screen as sharp as I've seen one. The multimedia features will blow you away, and your friends will be very very jealous. Is it expensive? Yes, very much so. I don't feel that I spent more than I was comfortable with. The pen sucks, we can all agree on that. Other than that, and the lack of ability to sync with Outlook 2003, the Clie UX50 is the slickest "oh wow" item out there. Have two friends already looking to buy their own after using mine for 5 minutes.
