GPS with XT
Don't take my word for it, check out the Garmin forums at Brighthand to see all the problems folks have had with XT and Palm.
After many tries at different upgrades and versions, I have inserted my bluetooth brick in the desk drawer, and taken all the XT software off of my Treo 755p. Now my unit is stable again.
No TX support on XT
RE: No TX support on XT
I think their Mission Statement goes something like... "Buy a Treo, a Centro or get the f*ck out of here".
Unfortunately for Palm, most people are going with option 3.
Why did Palm move to Garmin
JT
RE: Why did Palm move to Garmin
Palm E users used to be offered various "Via Michelin" GPS bundles back in the day, whilst Tungsten T3 users were offered TomTom options.
Was more down to marketing than anything else - which is what you have to rely on at Palm when your R&D team are handcuffed/under-funded/non-existent. ;-)
BTW - TomTom are based in Holland and since the dollar is quite weak at the moment against a strong Euro, this probably explains the price seeming high... plus us Europeans get ripped off on technology, fuel, beer, cars, you name it.
Don't know why I'm smiling.
RE: Why did Palm move to Garmin
That's also probably why we never saw an "official" update to add 755p support to the 1st Palm GPS Navigator kit with TT6 (though the Treo 680 patch to 6.03 works just fine) and no Centro support to Palm's 2nd TomTom kit (the one with the pre-loadeed miniSD card).
So Palm probably moved to Garmin more as a last man standing option instead of wanting to sever ties with TomTom. TomTom's atrocious support policies could also have had something to do with the move as well.
I wouldn't be surprised to see Garmin pull the plug on their Palm OS software development soon, given the general decline in that market + the explosion in popularity of standalone GPS units. IMO, Palm's failure to ship a Treo or handheld with integrated GPS is a very bad move. No one wants another BT receiver kludge if there's a more elegant solution to the problem. If the 800w/Drucker does indeed ship with integrated GPS look for a strong push for a monthly subscription service ala TeleNav.
